Met officers accused of 'torture'

Six Metropolitan Police officers have been suspended or placed on restricted duties following allegations of ill-treatment after a police raid.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the Enfield-based officers' conduct, according to Scotland Yard.

The alleged offences are said to have taken place in the borough during two drugs raids on 4 November last year.

The Met said the allegations were serious and raised "real concern".

But they said they could not comment on the exact nature of the complaints.

However, some national newspapers, are reporting that the officers used water torture techniques such as ducking a suspect's head under water.

As'salaamu 'alaykum folks

I found this article insightful and pertinent. (For those with limited attention spans: its a tad long)

You know the drama all too well. Perhaps you have been an actor in the drama or a silent observer or, dare we say, the instigator. With variations in the actual script of the drama, the all-too-familiar scene could unfold like this: A group of sincere Muslims have gathered to worship Allah Almighty. They are preparing to pray and then, after prayer, they will head out to a restaurant for dinner.

SCENE 1

Sincere Muslim #1: Wait, did I just see you put water on your socks?

Islam and bastards

Salaams,

What does Islam say about them? obviously having children, relations outside of wedlock is haraam, but what about after the fact?

What rights to they have? I would assume they are the same as the rights for kids born in/through wedlock?

(I could have probably had the title as "Islam and illegitimate children". Sue me.)

Imam allows marriage of Muslim women to Non-Muslim Men.

Imam bridges a wedding divide

MUSLIM women and their Christian fiancés from across Europe are travelling to Oxford to get married because imams in their own countries refuse to perform the ceremonies.

Dr Taj Hargey, chairman of the Muslim Education Centre of Oxford, said he had performed about 36 marriages in the past two years between Muslim women and non-Muslim men.

More imams are happy to marry Muslim men to non-Muslim women.

Couples from Spain, Germany, Sweden, Ireland, France and Norway have all come to Dr Hargey after failing to find someone locally prepared to carry out the service.

Most had spent months looking for an imam, and many found Dr Hargey after contacting American Muslim leaders via the Internet.

'Real Islam' just a phone call away

A telephone and internet helpline offering advice about the true teaching of Islam is being launched in the UK today.

Callers to the Islamic Hotline will get answers to their questions within 48 hours, from scholars trained at one of the world's principal Islamic universities. Users are also able to email their enquiries through the service's website.

The Islamic scholars behind the helpline hope it will combat radicalism in Britain and help ordinary Muslims answer difficult questions about their faith.

The Islamic Hotline believes it has good news for British Muslims - keeping the laws of Islam is not as difficult as you thought.

First Muslim cabinet minister appointed?

Tooting MP Sadiq Khan named first Muslim cabinet minister in Gordon Brown's reshuffle

Tooting MP Sadiq Khan said his bus driver father would be proud today after he became the first ever Muslim to join the cabinet, as the minister of state for transport.

Mr Khan, whose late father drove buses around Wandsworth for 25 years, was given the huge promotion in the Labour party reshuffle following the expenses scandal.

He also attacked the untimely resignation of his former boss, Hazel Blears, who quit her post as communities secretary at the most demoralising time for the party - the day before the European elections.

Sharia law 'same' as Krays' rule, says Lord Tebbit

Veteran Tory Lord Tebbit provoked anger among Muslims yesterday by comparing Islamic sharia courts to gangsters.

He likened the tribunals to the 'system of arbitration of disputes that was run by the Kray brothers'.

Lord Tebbit told the Lords: 'Are you not aware that there is extreme pressure put upon vulnerable women to go through a form of arbitration that results in them being virtually precluded from access to British law?'

The intervention from Lord Tebbit, the former Tory chairman and cabinet minister whose leading role in the Thatcher years has made him a revered figure for many in the party, reignited the row over Islamic courts and their role in the British justice system...
