well its more like 'Good Afternoon' here, but thanx.
and no, 'BaarakAllahu Feek' is a response to 'JazaakAllah Khair', kinda like how 'you're welcome' is a reply to 'Thank you'.
JazaakAllah Khair means "May God grant you good" or "May Allah reward you with good"
and
BaarakAllah Feek means "May Allah Bless you in/for it"

Ah yes - 5 hours.
Forgot about that pond thing.
It sounds like the phrases don't match - but interestingly enough if Baarak means "bless" then it is mighty similar to the Hebrew Baruch

wel no, if u think about it, they do match - the first is saying 'May God reward u with good [for what uv done for me]' and the reply is 'May God Bless you [also] for [wishing good on me]'
mighty complicated? maybe. but its all good.

Hasanan Al-aanisah Al-‘abqariyyah – hal yumkin an tatarjumeen kulla hazhihil juml fil ‘arabiyyah??
some parts are almost literal translation, but others had to b changed a lil' for example u said 'translate this entire post' and i dont think thers an equivalent of 'post' in arabic, as the english word itself is slang forum-language, so i changed tht bit to 'translate all these sentences'.
and one shud keep in mind that its fusha (classical) arabic, which is practically a world apart from colloquial. also keep in mind that transliteration can b a pain in the neck.

Went into Blackwells (a books store) the other day and they were selling HP books in different languages... as far as i could make out, in french, german and i think it was Chinese.
Incidently J.K let slip that Dumbledore's family is of significance in the next upcoming book.
I was just wondering the other day if shes likely to do a prequel. Maybe focus on James when he was at school... him and the Maurauders.... who knows.

(Thanks for pointing this thread out to me *DUST*.)
Okay, I just wanted to talk a little (perhaps get a discussion started) about the Lord of the Rings. I have to say that when I was younger I tried to read ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ numerous times but I always got bored by all the detailed descriptions of the scenery…
When the ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ movie came out, I thought it was great! So I read ‘The Two Towers’ and ‘The Return of the King’ and they have to be amongst the two best fiction books that I have ever read.
Now here’s something controversial; namely my favourite character. I know some of you may not like this, but my favourite character is someone who didn’t appear much in the movies, namely Faramir (does anyone remember him?).
One of the reasons why I like Faramir’s character is because unlike Legolas he has no special Élven powers, no magical powers like Gandalf and unlike Aragorn he is not of a great lineage; destined to be King.
Faramir is pretty much an ordinary guy who’s dad (Deneathor) is acting as a ‘caretaker king’ until Aragorn returns.
Yet despite his humble background Faramir exhibits the most noble characteristics. This gave me great enlightenment as a Muslim. Yes, I know, it’s odd gaining spiritual knowledge from a book of fiction but please let me briefly explain:
For example, we all now lying is ‘bad’ and we shouldn’t do it. Yet we all find ourselves in situations where a lie will get us what we want or get us out of trouble. So some of us (including me) are tempted to take the easy way out.
However I was struck by Faramir’s resolve when he was asked about whether he would lie:
(Background info: Faramir hates Orcs (because of the way they butchered and humiliated his ancestors) and he dedicates his entire life to hunting and killing those Orcs that venture into the lands around the Kingdom.)
Quote:
"I would never lie, not even to ensnare an Orc."
Faramir would never lie? Because he fully understands the ugliness of lying and the way it corrupts us. Something that I can too conveniently forget.
He has other great nuggets of knowledge:
On what he thinks about killing Orcs:
Quote:
"I do not slay man or beast needlessly, and not gladly even when it is needed."
On being a man of war:
Quote:
“I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.”
On humbleness:
Quote:
"The praise of the praiseworthy is above all rewards."
Any of these small short phrases would not be out of place coming out from a Muslim’s mouth. This is what impressed me about Faramir he was what a Muslim should like...A person with the beauty and strength of true moral courage…
Yet the best lesson in life I learnt from the character of Faramir was when he was speaking with his father. This was useful to me because my own father (May The Almighty guide him) is not a very religious man and he often says to me,
"You won’t get a promotion, at work, if you keep on showing people you’re a Muslim. You need to take it easy with Salah" or
"All this money you give to charity is pointless and will harm you."These questions usually start debates which last ages and at the end of them no-one feels like they’ve won.
Faramir encounters a similar situation with his Father, where his father rebukes him for keeping his high moral standards during a time of war. His Father says that morals are nice when things are good but during times of war you must be ruthless or you will killed:
Quote:
Denethor: "Ever your desire is to appear lordly and generous as a king of old, gracious, gentle. That may well befit one of a high race, if he sits in power and peace. But in desperate hours gentleness may be repaid with death."
"So be it," said Faramir.
“So be it” what a wonderful phrase to diffuse arguments. It shows the conviction you have in what you are doing and how that is more important than the results of any perceived failure.
Antagonist: "You are going to fail in this life if you adhere to Islam too strongly, it makes you soft and you will be unsuccessful."
Me: "So be it".
Or.
Antagonist: "You will never find a wife who prays five times a day and so you will die lonely."
Me: "Then so be it".
Etc…
A short simple phrase that has helped me greatly to avoid long protracted arguments…
Anyway, sorry to carry on like this, I’ll stop here for now. Please do feel free to share any points that you’d like to discuss about LOTR. I really would like to hear them and they don’t have to be as Islamically orientated as mine (although you may have to be a little patient to get a response from me as I only write to this board on alternate nights, but I'm sure you can discuss LOTR amongst yourselves ).
May peace be blessed upon you.

'hop to it' indeed! some ppl hav exams to study for ya know.
y not lunch at 2? wot time do u have it, 12? for me 2 is early. usually if i'm having lunch i have it at around 3, but nowadays i dont have it at all...
right wel here's ur translation...
some parts are almost literal translation, but others had to b changed a lil' for example u said 'translate this entire post' and i dont think thers an equivalent of 'post' in arabic, as the english word itself is slang forum-language, so i changed tht bit to 'translate all these sentences'.
and one shud keep in mind that its fusha (classical) arabic, which is practically a world apart from colloquial. also keep in mind that transliteration can b a pain in the neck.

1 o clock - sharp.
That is when civilized people have lunch.
And by civilized people I mean me.
Would you not agree cake is a magnificent substance, far more magnificent than say... plutonium or asparagus?
Thereis no actual time when you have lunch, but really it is up to you to descide when to have. Some people do not even have lunch (like me!), some people do! depends on their mood!!

Maybe focus on James when he was at school... him and the Maurauders.... who knows.
Back in BLACK
yeh HP has been published in loadsa different languages.
i'm pretty sure someone's asked her that - and she sed no, book no.7 really is going to be the 'final' book.

Salaam,
(Thanks for pointing this thread out to me *DUST*.)
Faramir would never lie? Because he fully understands the ugliness of lying and the way it corrupts us. Something that I can too conveniently forget.
He has other great nuggets of knowledge:
On what he thinks about killing Orcs: On being a man of war: On humbleness:
May peace be blessed upon you.

aaanyway...
too true! i hadnt read the books in ages by the time the movie came out, so i skim-read em all again... y would anyone not like Faramir?! i thought his character was amazing too! yep, dear ol' demented Denethor II... and thats a good point actually, Faramir manages to be equally, if not more, brave than the rest of them, even though he lacks their powers. but then again its not as if the hobbits had any special powers either AND they were kinda height challenged... ...and people say there's nothing to gain from reading fiction... mashaAllah Paladin its great the way u managed to extract such info from a character... in fact, uv made me want to read RotK all over again! because i first read the trilogy as a kid, i guess i did not look deeper into the characters... with age comes wisdom. well... as a kid the moral i took from LotR was 'even little people can overcome evil'.I NEVER WORE IT BECAUSE OF THE TALIBAN, MOTHER. ~Become who you were born to be~
i had the e-book to The Hobbit...
The Lover is ever drunk with love;
He is free, he is mad,
He dances with ecstasy and delight.
Caught by our own thoughts,
We worry about every little thing,
But once we get drunk on that love,
Whatever will be, will be.
