Salaam,

I really should visit this board more often and not just when I’m suffering from insomnia...
If it's okay with you guys I’ll continue to post on this thread...
But anyway what was I going to discuss...? Oh yes, I remember now...

Many people think that LOTR is all about the struggle against evil through violent fighting and war...
This is true to an extent...
However, I believe there is a parallel story in LOTR that shows that it is not might and war which brings about victory, but instead mercy and pity does...

"Mercy?" I hear you say, "How can you win a war against evil through mercy? When is mercy ever going to achieve anything? Anger, courage, rage; these are what determine success in times of war...,,Mercy is weakness and only the meak and weak posses it, not the strong and successful!"
Well let us see from LOTR, is mercy really that rubbish?

Just before we do that, let us take a break from LOTR (just briefly though ;))...
Listen to the powerful nature of these names:

The Inflictor of Retribution.
The Ever-Dominant.
The One whose Wrath is most Terrible.

These are just some of the awe-inspiring attributes that that our Lord chooses to be known by.
Yet out of all the attributes which our Lord can be known by, which two does he want us to constantly remember him by? What phrase should all Muslims try and recite whenever they begin anything:
Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim
"In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful."

Out of all His terrifying, awe-inspiring qualities - that would command our obedience - our Lord, instead, asks us to remember his Mercy and Compassion.
Why?
Why is mercy and compassion so important? Is it really powerful?
Well, this question would require a great and wise scholar to answer fully, but the LOTR gives us a small insight into the power of mercy....

So, getting back to the story, do you remember near the very end of the book, when everything is going wrong and all appears doomed, for the forces of good? Do you remember how success appeared impossible?
Just to re-cap:
-The last remaining armies of men were outnumbered and fighting a losing battle against the overwhelming might of Sauron’s evil forces.
-Frodo had given in to the temptation of the ring and refused to destroy it. Instead he put the ring on; thereby betraying his mission.
-The Ringwraiths and Sauron realise where the ring is, as soon as Frodo puts it on, and the Ringwraiths rush off to capture it; within a matter of minutes the forces of evil will have the ring within their possession.
-Once Sauron has the ring no possible peoples of the world will be able to stand against him for as long as the world exists. He will be able to rule unchallenged and the forces of evil will descend on the world forever.....

When I was reading these final few pages, and the desperation of the situation, and how the utter destruction of all that was good was only a few moments away; for all hope was but gone. I was reminded of the following passage of the Quran:

Quote:
"Affliction and adversity befell them, they were shaken as with earthquake, till the messenger (of Allah) and those who believed along with him said: When cometh Allah's help?"
(Al-Baqara – 2.214)
I think the Christian parallel for the above quote would be when Jesus (May peace be upon him) said:
Quote:
"My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46).

Both these quotes echo the feeling of despair that can be felt during these final pages of LOTR...for the whole world, and everything good within it, is doomed.

Yet from this despair salvation arrives in the form of Gollum who bites the ring off Frodo’s hand and then tumbles into the lava, thereby destroying himself and the ring...

So what? What has this to do with mercy?

Well, in 'The Hobbit' where Bilbo Baggins first finds the ring, he has the opportunity to kill Gollum but he doesn’t. He has pity on the creature called Gollum who lives in the dark with no family or friend or anything joyful. He shows mercy to him and spares him his life. Much to the later annoyance of Frodo, but Gandalf is at hand to offer advice:

Quote:
Frodo: "It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill him when he had the chance."

Gandalf: "Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many – yours not the least."

Frodo takes this lesson to heart and the saving of the world and Frodo's own salvation is achieved by his mercy...
For Sam continually tells Frodo that Gollum would betray him, and rob him. Yet Frodo always offers Gollum mercy and forgiveness for he knows the corrupting power of the ring and how it had devoured Gollum’s soul...

Without the mercy of Bilbo, Gollum wouldn't have been there to guide Frodo and Sam into Mordor and without Frodo’s mercy Gollum wouldn't have been at Mount Doom to inadvertently complete the Quest by destroying the ring.

In the end, the salvation of the all the peoples of Middle-earth is really down to the mercy shown by Bilbo and Frodo to the wretched Gollum...
Something to ponder, perhaps...

So *DUST*’s original message of :
'Even the little people can overcome evil' can be extended to
'Even the little deeds can overcome evil'...

We should never underestimate the power that a small act of goodness can have.....‘The Lord of The Rings’ shows us this to an extent; the entire fate of the world can rest on the smallest of noble actions...

May peace be blessed upon you.

oh u crack me up dark paladin ...comparing lotR with the quran...*hahaha boomboom* lol... actually John Tolkien did put ALOT of religion into his books although i didnt realise that until i read it somewhere...'the chronicles of narnia' also is based on christianity (c.s Lewis and J.R.R Tolkien were friends..) Aslan is the 'true king' but is killed then comes back to life, the white witch represents satan etc..

The Lover is ever drunk with love;
He is free, he is mad,
He dances with ecstasy and delight.

Caught by our own thoughts,
We worry about every little thing,
But once we get drunk on that love,
Whatever will be, will be.
