havent come across some you've stated above

Yeah pakis people love these Superstitions.

I remember getting my cousins in pakistan really angry for having my hand on my head, they made me promise to never do that again for some reason. But apart from that, i haven't really had much esle.

iv come across the 1 about putting your hands on your head and that when u sneeze some1 is thinking of ya :roll: but apart from that the others are new 2 me...which is a good thing 😂

Out of curiosity (relating to lilsis initial post) is there any cultural stigma about being lighter skinned?

It's something african americans are really sensitive about over here - older generations make a big deal about the kid with "the good hair" or "the good skin," and I noticed in most cultures there is a prediliction toward lighter skin tone.

In our societies, it a wanted trait to be lighter skin.

On a side note, alot of relatives in Kashmir are so light in colour, british caucasians look positively tanned.

However those in the uk hae darker skin.

I have noticed how some people with very fair skin have come over, and over ime their skin has gone slightly darker!

Interesting - is there a lot of racial trouble in the UK that sparks this whole lighter skin = desirable thing or was it preexisting.

its not from british asian culture, in fact, most people of our generation dont pay much attention to it - as u pointed out with the african americans, similarly its the 'older generation' who makes a big deal about it all. :roll:

there is an interesting argument that it actually comes from the british culture - when India(/Pakistan/Bangladesh) was under colonial rule, they took little snippets from British culture (most of it was forced down their throats and eventually assimilated into indian culture). in those days, European (white) women had an obsession with fair skin - they would cake on foundation and look like clowns (apparently a favourable trait in those days). 😉 and so that is something the colonialists passed on to the Indian(/Pakistani/Bangladeshi) people, which is sadly still adhered to today in those countries.

i dont know about Pakistani castes, but in India the Hindu caste system wasnt all that pronounced prior to colonial rule. but as u mentioned, the colonialists established the caste system in society, to keep the people divided and maintain control over them.

So basically it was there - sorta latent, but the Brits saw it and exploited it

The hindu's have a caste system.

It was there before hand.
