We are told we have free will - if everything is fated then surely we do not.
Muslims believe in both
its difficult to draw the line at times

It's the extreme - everything is predetermined there really isn't freewill you are just acting out a role you have no control over
Everything is "fated"
oh im not fatalistic then!!
wouldnt say you have no control
i believe in 2 things
1 - you make it what it is
2 - what happens, happens
LilSis is right..........hard to draw the line
but having said that, What happens has already been written, the beauty is we dont know nor can we begin to imagine, and thats were trust in Allah comes in me thinks

No, we have free will.
But patterns are predictable, and some things are out of our control.
You cannot control eg a speeding car hurtling towards you.

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.
The thing with this freewill and destiny talk, is that it get over complicated very quickly, it is rather a simple equation if you look at it. Because as muslims we believe that Allah swt is All Knowing, now if everything wasn’t predestined to happen, then that statement about Allah swt being all knowing would be worng, which is part of a muslim belief.
But as mere human being we don’t have this power of knowing everything, so we live in our own accord and make our own decisions and we have our own responsibility to our life. Because we don’t know what will become of us and its important to remember that this life is only a test and too pass we need to put our full effort into it.

fatalistic to me means same as what constantine said and i'd add that it also means submission to all that happens as inevitable. now we all know no one can say anything is inevitable for sure except death.
i just thought Muslim sister perhaps meant something different, indeed she must
anyway i think yuit's explanation ends the debating

We ARE free to do what we want. But Allah (swt) already knows what we will or won't do...
Certain things such as ones rizq, birth, death etc is stuff that we can't change. Its strongly predestined.
However, dua's and good deeds alters destiny in our favour.
Its a confusing topic...
But being too fatalistic in certain stuff makes me lazy...sometimes I think, why should I bother doing stuff as I'm going to get what's coming to me anyway... :?

but surely Muslim Sister thats not good.
i feel the opposite i always think that what i receive is what my own hands have sent forth. ie i shape my own fate thats why certain things happen because i deserve them by my own fault or making.
are we talking about opposites here or do you mean the same thing.
and as Omrow says of course Allah is all wise and all knowing. He made us and knows what we have done till our deaths and beyond but inbetween it was all our own making and the blame goes to ourselves for any good or any bad.
If your a good person destiny will ALWAYS be in ur favour
and its tru that if u do bad stuff then obvioulsy bad things will happen to u

Everything is "fated"
Intresting.
So thats a bad thing right?
I consider it bad - and incorrect.
We are told we have free will - if everything is fated then surely we do not.
I consider free will the primary author of fate, and not the other way round.
