not sure about radient face
to be frank i find it sumwhat racist
[i]On the Day when (some) faces will be whitened and (some) faces will be blackened; and as for those whose faces have been blackened, it will be said unto them: Disbelieved ye after your (profession of) belief ? I think the sis meant, that they have Noor on their faces and a glowing shine to them...

Radiance, i.e. the Noor (light) that shines on the faces of pious people should not be taken literally.
It is possible for a black person to be blessed with this Noor and for a really fair person to have a face clouded over with “darkness”.

Is Sufism an inward journey toward God - like say a Buddhist Monk who reflect upon themselves and their relationship with (God), or is it an outward journey like Franciscan Monks who concentrate on an ascetic lifestyle and service to others?
Is it primarily about knowledge or actions?

More inward than outward.
Whilst it is established that seclusion, cutting yourself off from the world, giving up food/sleep etc is part of Sufism.....it is possible to live amongst people and still practise seclusion (if that makes sense)
The emphasis lies in the inner condition...it is said that the best Sufi is the one who buys, sells, interacts with others in the market but never forgets God for a single moment.
Its neither knowledge and actions....its more based on your intention.
Cos according to Islamic belief Saten was not lacking in knowledge...but his pride led to his downfall (which is a inner condition)
Furthermore, there are many accounts of martyres, scholars, generous people etc who were thrown in hell because their actions were based on love of praise from people...in other words their intentions were wrong which is a inner condition.

that doesn't make sense to me. the heart doesn't necessarily start beating faster when we sin. it's an organ. when we die, it dies too. but the soul lives on, and is lifted to the heavens. 'heart' and 'soul' may be used interchangeably in our language as they are seen to be synonyms, but in actuality i don't believe they are.

Also, the physical and spiritual heart are connected, according to philosophers such as Imam Ghazali, Shaykh-ul-Akbar Ibn Arabi and Ibn Taiymiyya, who all claim that if the spiritual heart is diseased, it will have an effect on the physical heart.
The scholors have said that when the spiritual heart is not getting enough "vitamin"(in this case rememberance), then the individual may go through, what in modern day is known as a mid-life crisis. where life seems boring, n doesnt make sense, n the individual feels a lack of fulfilment.

I strongly agree with the above.
For instance, over-eating affects the spiritual as well as the physical heart...in the same way we literally feel agitated and uneasy/depressed when we sin, this is felt by the both the physical and the spiritual heart.
The soul does dwell in the heart-the spiritual heart, which can at times affect the physical heart.

In the religious History of the world, you have many "Sufis". Khidr a.s. was around before the Time of Sayidina Musa a,s, In the times of the prophets, they influenced people to such a level, that they attained closeness to Allah swt. If you read about the characters of all the prophets, you will see an embodiment of sufic thought, just read about Jesus/Isa a.s. they were very highly spiritual, and after Isa a.s. and before the holy Prophet s.a.w came, there were many christians, who can be considered Sufis, because they devoted there entire life to Allah swt, and the work of the lord.
Saint George of what is today greece is an example. They embodied the Sufic way, but obviously not the way we have prescribed to us today. And, infact, more proof of this, although an opression on saint george from his peoples, is the fact that saint georges body, is preserved in a see through glass coffin in a church in greece. And, according to reliable sources, this body lays there, as if it has only died an hour ago, there is no sign of decay.
