The Holocaust survivor whose life is in danger again

In the Israeli city of Safed, an 89-year-old man has been accused of treachery for welcoming Arab students. Catrina Stewart reports

First they threatened to burn his house down. Then they pinned leaflets to his front door, denouncing him as a Jewish traitor. But Eli Tzavieli, an 89-year-old Holocaust survivor, is defiant. His only "crime" is to rent out his rooms to three Arab students attending the college in Safed, a religious city in northern Israel that was until recently more famous for Jewish mysticism and Madonna.

A campaign waged by Shmuel Eliyahu, the town's radical head rabbi, culminating in a ruling barring residents from renting rooms to Israeli Arabs, means that Safed is fast emerging as a byword for racism.

Phil Woolas immigration leaflets case: high court orders election rerun in Oldham East

Special election court heard Labour MP knowingly made false claims as experts predict profound changes for future polls

Phil Woolas, the shadow immigration minister, faces being ejected from parliament after a court ruled today that he had breached election laws by falsely claiming his Liberal Democrat opponent had "wooed" extremist Muslims in the run-up to the 6 May poll.

For the first time in 99 years a specially convened election court has overturned the result of a parliamentary poll and ordered a rerun after two high court judges ruled the result of the Oldham East poll void. They upheld the claim by Elwyn Watkins that Woolas knowingly made false statements.

Nine years ago it was the National Front marching.

Today it will be supporters of the English Defence League peddling a slightly different brand of xenophobia. But whatever name they go by, many residents of Bradford fear the outcome could be the same.

According to the comments of facebook, their motives are anything but peaceful, and given the precedent set of '96 and '01, the fact this is allowed to go ahead is criminal in itself.

Somaliland [ Autonomous Breakaway Region of Somalia]

Very little official data exists on this state - the CIA don't even have a section on it.

Yet in parliament it was voiced the government promised to increase funds there due to its 'democratic' nature, or to that effect.

Considering no sovereign state to date recognises its existence, and only a particular 'Jewish state' in the region has voiced an opinion for it to be recognised, what is the importance of such a state in the 'Horn of Africa', whilst the state from which it's seceded remains in chaos, and amongst the worst 5 in the world.

The Rat Children - Pakistan [?!]

How can a mere myth ruin the lives of thousands of children? In Pakistan, microcephalics-babies born with abnormally small heads-are known as 'rats' and credited with god-like powers. Believers will give them money in the hope of blessings, but unscrupulous gangs of beggars are now exploiting this ancient tradition for their own ends. They kidnap young 'rat' children - or frighten parents into handing them over-and then force them into a lifetime of begging on the streets. They are lucrative-so much so that some people allege that normal babies are benig deliberately deformed to look like microcephalics. Why else, they ask, are there so many such children in Pakistan?
