The Rise Of Islam In India

Hi All,

This ones really for the people who know their Islamic History (seems to be a constant area of interest for me).

Does anyone know how Islam arrived in India back in the day and if there was any major events that took place at/or around this place e.g. battles etc...

If anyone has any good links or articles on this that would be appreciated too. I only ask as ive been told alot of unsavory things about this topic and would prefer to get my facts right before argueing.

Thnx

Seraph

PS: If you can provide rough time periods also that would be swell....

did i just say swell?

Depends how far you wish to use the term "India". If you are including afghanistan in this equation then I believe Islam was brought to that noble land during the khilafah of Sayyidina Umar radhiyallahu anh as large portions of modern day afghanistan were infact part of the Persian Empire. It is on this basis that a number of Sahaabah Karaam are even buried in the land of Qandahar; some say upto 70 Sahaabah Karaam alayhim ridhwaan are buried there and the place of their burial is known as Tomb of the Pious.

If you are referring to India and Pakistan region then Islaam by and large arrived properly in stages. The first and foremost being the conquest of Sindh by Hadrat Muhammad ibn Qasim al-Thaqafi rahmatullahi ta'ala alayh.

664 CE
A group of Sahaabah Karaam alayhim ridhwaan enter "india" via Quetta mountain-pass. There is not much information on this. According to local tradition upto 5 Sahaabah Karaam are buried in Baluchistan near to Gwadar.

708 CE
In brief - Muslims were travelling from Sri Lanka to Basrah. The ship had mostly women and children as a number of the men had died in Sri Lanka. Due to a storm the ship/s was/were driven towards Debul which was the major port of Sindh and was located 35 miles to the east of Karachi.
Pirates attacked the ship; they looted the goods and took the women and children captive. The women cried out in despair to Hajjaj ibn Yusuf and were mocked at by the pirates. A few men managed to escape and inform Governor Hajjaj.

Hajjaj ibn Yusuf was infuriated and demanded from the Raja of Sindh - Dahar ibn Chach - that the muslims be released and despatched with due protection and honour. He refused and said it was out of his hands.

Governor Hajjaj sought Khalifah al Walid's permission to despatch a force to check the pirates. Permission granted and and arab expedition marched under Hadrat Ubaydullah. The expeditiion entered Sindh through Makran and was only intended to deal with the pirates but Raja Dahran - knowing fullwell this was no invasion - still despatched his own forces and soundly defeated the small band of Arabs.

Another expedition was prepared under the leadership of Hadrat Budail and they were prepared to fight the Hindu army. Hadrat Budayl was courageous and had pure intention but a surprise was instore. The arab horses became unmanageable at the sight of the Indian elephants. Even the horse of Hadrat Budayl became frightened and threw its rider. He drank from the chalice of martyrdom and the army fell back to the persian/muslim city of Makran.

InshaALLAH I will allow this information to be digested before I scrawl a few words on the third blessed and victorious expedition.

Astaghfirullah - May ALLAH forgive me for I have erred.

Islam first came to India in a most beautiful way and I cannot believe that I forgot.

It has been chronicled, that the then king of the Malabar state of Kodungalloor, in present-day Kerala, India, was standing out on his balcony that night, when he saw the moon being split into two. THe king, known as Cherumaan Perumaal OR CHAKRAWATI FARMAS (both names allude to the same person I think and the secon name is more famous), was astonished and disturbed by what he had seen. He asked all the wise men of his realm whether any of them had seen it. And could find no one who had witnessed this sight. Yet he knew for sure that he hadn't dreamt it.

A few years later, an Arab trading ship from Yemen, landed on the Western coast of Kerala, known as Malabar, some 700 years ahead of Vasco da Gama (the famous Portugese explorer who is credited with the discovery of Malabar).
They had come to trade frankinscence in return for spices and cotton. They were presented in the court of King Perumaal, and after a few days, he questioned them if anyone in their land had seen the moon splitting into two.

To his surprise, they informed him of the new Prophet who had come with a new religion, and the incidents which had lead to God Himself creating the Moon Miracle so that people would believe in the Prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him).

King Perumaal was so moved by this narrative, that he immediately decided to travel to Arabia with his Prime Minister, and visit the Prophet himself. It is said that he travelled with the Arab traders to Arabia and accepted Islam. Some accounts say that he accepted Islam personally at the hands of the Prophet, while some accounts say that he was taught Islam by one of the Companions of the Prophet.

However, all accounts agree that he converted to Islam, but his Prime Minister remained a Hindu. On their way back to Kerala, King Perumaal, fell ill and decided to get off at the Port of Salalah, in present-day Oman. He sent back a letter with his Prime Minister, to his family and people in Kerala, detailing his conversion and exhorting all those who trusted him to accept Islam.

The letter still exists in a meuseum in Kerala. It is said that part of the Hindu royal family accepted Islam, along with a sizeable population of the common people. A Companion of the Prophet who had accompanied the ship back to Kerala, stayed on in Kodungalloor and helped strengthen the Islamic faith by building the first mosque on the Indian Sub-continent, known till today as the Cheruman Perumaal Masjid.

Meanwhile, king Perumaal married an Arab lady in Salalah, had children by her, and when he died 11 years later, he was buried near the grave of Prophet Ayub (Job) in Salalah. People from around the world, often travel to Salalah, in Oman, to see both these graves. The Arabian family of king Perumaal is very well known in Salalah and still retains his Muslim name. His tombstone, though carries both his old name and his Muslim name.

So Islam entered Kerala, India, at the same time it came to the Arabs, thanks to the miracle of the 'Split Moon'.

To this day the Muslim branch of the old Royal family of Kerala, keeps alive the story of Perumaal's conversion, with special festivities during Eid. That family is called the Royal Arakkal family and is headed by a matriarch, called Arakkal Beevi.

According to some the members of the royal family and common citizens may have converted to Islaam circa 618 CE.

Also if my memory serves me correctly then Sayyidina Abu Sa'eed al Khudri radhiyallahu anh narrates to the effect that Sayyidina Chakrawarti radhiyallahu anh brought some pickle as a gift for Hadrat Nabi salallahu alayhi wa sallam and this was shared. This may be in Mustadrak Imam Haakim. May ALLAH forgive me if I am wrong.

Mashallah.

The above in blue I actually received as an email. But this Indian Sahaabi - Sayyidina Chakrawarti radhiyallahu anh - has been mentioned in a number of urdu bayaan that I have heard.

711CE
Governor Hajjaj paid more attention to the third military expedition and selected the finest troops. Hajjaj appointed his nephew/son-in-law - Hadrat Muhammad ibn Qasim ath-Thaqafi as the Ameer of the lashkar.

Hadrat was barely 17 years of age and at the time he was the governor of the Persian city of Rayy. He handed over the governorship of Rayy to trusted to people and proceeded to Shiraz where his army was waiting. From here they proceeded across the desert via Makran to Sindh. At Makran the remnants of the previous two expeditions joined the army. Artillery for the battle was sent by sea.

The army consisted of 6000 of the finest Syrian horsemen, 6000 camelmen and 3000 camels used for baggage carrying. By the time the lashkar reached Debul, the Arab Armada had already reached and the artillery was already ashore. Gunpowder was unknown and the arabs used a device called a balista I think which was like a wooden cannon and was used to sling rocks at siege towns. The largest balista brought for this expedition was nicknamed al-Arus (The Bride) and it required 500 men to work it.

The city of Debul was laid siege. There was a garrison of 4000 Rajputs in the town but an open confrontation did not take place. Minor skirmishes took place for a number of days. The city was well fortified and at the centre of the city was a huge temple with a steeple and a red flag. Hindu morale remained high despite the siege. A defector Brahman came to meet Hadrat ibn Qasim and it was divulged that the Priests of the city had placed a talisman beneath the steeple to protect the city- so long as that was standing and the flag fluttering the morale within the city would remain high.

Hadrat Ibn Qasim ordered Chief of Artillery - Hadrat Jawiyyah - to aim at the flag and steeple. On the third shot the base of the steeple was smashed by Al-Arus and the flag fell. Hindus were shocked; their faith shaken. The Rajputs charged out of the city and engaged in a battle which lasted for 3 days. The Hindus surrendered; the city was in Muslim hands.

Hadrat Ibn Qasim established a muslim quarter, garrisone 4000 troops in Debul and built a masjid. But the aim of this expedition was to bring Raja Dahar ibn Chach into subervience and he was not in he city. The lashkar proceeded into interior Sindh.

Seraphim - I am unsure if this is information that you want or how detailed or brief you want the magnificent events of Islamic History in India. Please be so kind as to inform me if I am going into too much detail or if it is not detailed enough or if I have got the wrong end of the stick.

Fear and caution are two different things - Admin's right you can't give out too much information online. I don't think anybody here is afraid of the regulars or anything... but the fact you post information about yourself readily available to the public means anybody can access it. I already had a problem with a stalker and changed my screen name to something people wouldn't recognize until I shook her off.

Just be aware of it... it's good to be guarded.

*And as a general warning to present or potential stalkers of anybody on this forum - hurt anybody here and i'm coming at you with my 9 iron.

lol a yemeni trading ship came to India and brought islam?!

That's a bit ironic given your background doncha think? Or has there always been a lot of trading between Yemen and India?

If you look at the map, right at the tip of the arabian peninsula, near qatar I think, there is only a very short distance to travel.

Almost like the pass from Africa into spain, or from france to the uk.

It would probably have been a natural crossing point for traders.

Hey maybe you can help me with this because I didn't understand it at all. My Islam professor last semester was a Syrian who called himself Arab even though Syrians aren't really arabs.

Anyway he was saying that back in the day the ethnic arabs were the ones from the lower kingdoms in present day Yemen, and that the "Arabs" to the North weren't really Arabs but rather a mixed crew who happened to speak arabic... or something like that

Whats up with that?

Well my anonimity was kinda destroyed with the relaunch of the mag...

Had to metthayder, Seraph, beast says he kept tabs from a distance... omrow at times seems to know abit too much for comfort... considering I have no idea who he is. Someone else i know recently joined, and there is another member I think may know me... (last two are not regulars...)

So I thought to hell with it. They destroyed everything I builtup.

But how much do you lot really know about me.

The person who joined recently was saying how I appear to portray a mysterious persona on these forums! (and how everybody here think si am alot better than I really am)

well i guess thats kinda how we brits call someone Indian/Pakistani/Bengali an 'Asian', whereas to u that term is used for what we know as 'Oriental' people... can get kinda confusing, lol.

hmm, i dunno, but i guess that explains why the yemeni dialect of spoken arabic is closest to fusha (classical) than any other 'arab' country...

lol well I think that by now most arabs are pretty well homogenous arabs - but he meant like waaaaaaay back in the day.

He pointed out that the Jahilya was really more of a northern arabia thing where as southern arabia was actually quite wealthy with a strong ancient civilization.

They had kings surprisingly!

yup.

I studied this before, but had totally forgotten it before now. Now i an remember small things...

I think Mecca was on a path leading from yemen to the persian empire.

Yea that's why it was a religious and trading hub for so long.

Is anybody aware of any secular histories of Mecca?

I doubt many if any exist

secular? not aware of any.

Prior to Islam, the people were either monotheiests, or polytheists as far as I know...

Yea I agree - I dunno anything about you Admin.

Hell I don't even know how old you are... from what I gather you are a single 20 something computer programmer that lives at home.

And that's it.

IS that the one described in Surah 'Feel' (It means elephant I think)? where the army was destroyed? by birds throwing down small stones?

I think he had made a 'rival' the the ka'aba, and when people did not go to it, he decided to destroy the ka'abah?
