A Saint RA was once by a person to pray that The Lord would cast a Glorious Glance upon him.
The Saint RA asked, "What qualifications do you have that you would be worthy of A Glance from The Lord?"
The person replied "If The Lord would bestow a glance upon me, all qualifications would become manifest in me."
The Saint RA was satisfied by this reply.

Thats deep..
Linking in with above incident once a extremly pious man who spent his entire life worshipping/serving Allah (swt) was visited by an angel who informed him that God has not accepted any of his devotions...
On hearing this the man went into wajd (Spiritual Ecstasy)…when people asked him why he was so happy despite receiving such sad news the man said “At least He noticed me”.
Mawlana Rumi expressed this sentiment in a poem of his titled “The Awakening”.
You are hidden from me.
But it is you who keeps me alive
Perhaps the time will come
when You will tire of kisses
I shall be happy
even for insults from You
I only ask that You
keep some attention on me.
Yesterday I was in a school which consisted of year 8 kids all permanently excluded from their own school cos of various reasons,
We had an RE lesson in which we were trying to explain the teachings of Buddhism to them… a lot of the teachings of Buddhism are similar to Sufism, such as…
1-the Right View. wisdom and compassion.
2. Right Thought. We are what we think. Clear and kind thoughts build good, strong characters.
3. Right Speech. By speaking kind and helpful words, we are respected and trusted by everyone.
4. Right Conduct. No matter what we say, others know us from the way we behave. Before we criticize others, we should first see what we do ourselves.
5. Right Livelihood. This means choosing a job that does not hurt others. The Buddha said, "Do not earn your living by harming others. Do not seek happiness by making others unhappy."
6. Right Effort. A worthwhile life means doing our best at all times and having good will toward others. This also means not wasting effort on things that harm ourselves and others.
7. Right Mindfulness. This means being aware of our thoughts, words, and deeds.
8. Right Concentration. Focus on one thought or object at a time. By doing this, we can be quiet and attain true peace of mind.
Buddhism is also big on eating/sleeping less and self denial and forgiveness.
Unsurprisingly the lesson did not go down well at all with the excluded kids….
Further to that....
Buddhist have these vows, and the monks have to say them every single day.
they have four vows
1 - they vow to overcome themselves every day. a concious vow that they will do it today
2 - a vow to give up desire. to give up wanting dunya
3 - a vow to master the sacred law before they die
4 - they vow to help other creatures
everyday they recommit to this
By the way, 'A Poor mans book of assistance' by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, is a really good inspiring lecture, i reccomend it to all

An explanation by the Contemporary Sufi M. R. BAWA MUHAIYADDEEN given on September 11, 1973, in Philadelphia, PA.
There is the truth of God--God's power. This truth cannot be destroyed by anything. This power is God's beauty. It is His qualities, His justice, and His peacefulness. It is the love and compassion which He bestows without ego, without the 'I'. Selflessly, He bestows His grace to all, keeping nothing for Himself. This is the power which He bestows upon all creation as tolerance, patience, peacefulness, and compassion. It is without anger. It bestows all nourishment and sustenance to each of God's creations, according to its needs and wants. IT IS OUR DUTY, OUR SOLE DUTY, TO TAKE THE QUALITIES OF GOD WITHIN OURSELVES. We must acquire the three thousand qualities of God, which are His divine power.
If you can train a tiger and sharpen its intellect, you may be able to teach it not to attack and kill other lives. If you can train it to eat nothing other than the food it is given, then it will no longer leap upon other creatures and kill them. Similarly, IF WE BEGIN TO IMBIBE ONLY THE QUALITIES OF GOD, WE WILL NOT CAUSE HARM TO ANY OF GOD'S CREATIONS. IT IS HIS QUALITIES THAT WE MUST FIRST LEARN AND ACQUIRE WITHIN OURSELVES AND THEN TEACH TO OTHERS.
God has no form. He has no shadow. There is nothing in comparison to Him. He has neither wife nor child. He is neither darkness nor light. He is not like the sun, nor the moon, nor the stars. God is one power, a power which is able to control and subdue all other powers. From the single atom to all of the universes, this is a power which is intimately mixed within all things. It has nothing, no shadow, no aid. It is the One who is alone, the Original One. It is a point, a power, which has neither beginning nor end. There is no language for it, nor does it have a religion. It does not possess a race; there are no colors in it, no black or white. It is a power, a point which is within every creation.
It has no mouth, no tongue to speak, yet through our mouths that power is speaking. It has no eyes, yet it is observing through our eyes. It has no ears, yet it replies to the sounds that we hear with our own ears. It has no nose, but it senses fragrance through our sense of smell. It has no hands, but that power makes our hands the agency for giving and receiving. It has no feet or legs, but it walks throughout all the universes. Such is that power.
The mind cannot see this power. The mind has the form of a demon. Earth, fire, water, air, and ether are the form of this demon. It is the essence of the elements, the form of spirits or vapors, the form of desire and illusion. Therefore, mind and desire cannot see or pray to God. God is that treasure which transcends mind and desire. If we want to see that treasure and realize it, THEN WE HAVE TO UNDERSTAND OURSELVES. Only wisdom can understand that treasure, and if we want to realize God, THEN WE MUST ACQUIRE HIS QUALITIES WITHIN OURSELVES. Those qualities create a different form within us, the form of His beauty. God can never be seen. It is God's qualities which are His beauty, and the light which radiates through those qualities is His power. THOSE QUALITIES ARE HIS FORM AND THAT LIGHT IS HIS POWER. That is God.
WE MUST TRY TO DEVELOP THAT FORM WITHIN US. We must be as nothing, "I am not." Then we are in the state of God-Man, Man-God. Then there is nothing, "I am not." Then it is God's qualities that perform all actions. If we develop His qualities within us, then that form will come and there will be no 'I'. THE POWER WHICH COMES FROM THAT INNER FORM IS GOD. Whoever has taken in the qualities of God and has taken on that beauty and that form will be the prince of God, His son. Then he is nothing--there is no 'I'. The elements of earth, fire, water, air, and ether have died from him. Mind and desire have gone from him and the qualities of God have come within him. This state is the beauty of God and he is the prince of God. Within that power lies the prince of God who is the heir to the kingdom of God. OUR DUTY IS TO FIRST DEVELOP THOSE QUALITIES WITHIN US AND THEN TO TEACH WISDOM THROUGH THOSE QUALITIES.
There are seven states of wisdom or consciousness: feeling, awareness, intellect, judgment, wisdom, divine analytic wisdom, and divine luminous wisdom. It is with these seven states of consciousness that one must see God. GOD CANNOT BE SEEN THROUGH SCIENCE; NOR CAN HE BE SEEN THROUGH INTELLECTUAL LEARNING, NOR THROUGH RELIGION, SECTS, OR LANGUAGES; NOR THROUGH PRAYERS OFFERED BY MIND AND DESIRE. Only God can see God. If only God can see God, then what is God? GOD IS HIS QUALITIES. It is those divine qualities that are called 'God'. IF THE FORM OF HIS QUALITIES DEVELOPS WITHIN ONE, THEN GOD IS THERE. He is there. It is through these qualities that God is seeing God. One takes the form of God and God is seen through this form. What we must do is to take this form of God's qualities within ourselves and then teach those qualities to others.

What you put in the hearts of others; is what goes back into your own heart…
I know Sufism emphasises a lot on self-denial but isn’t that a little dangerous?
I mean lack of sleep can cause depression and in the long term serious mental problems.
Lack of water affects every organ in the body; in a bad way.
Social exclusion can make one lonely and more prone to depression.
Suppressing ones desire completely is not what islam is about and it can make you mentally ill.
How many people have done these things and how did it affect you?
Don’t get me wrong consuming less food is a good thing, not a bad thing; I can list so many benefits for that. And talking less is a very, VERY good thing. Something I need to do more of….
IMO reading about sufi saints is not inspirational, knowing a saint in action (well almost a saint in my case) is more inspirational because I’m more likely to imitate the people know then the people I read about…
IMO practicing forgiveness becomes easier over time. It’s only the first few times that’s the struggle.
Treating people nicely comes with a lot a practice too.

self denial....more on the lines of making yourself small and humbling yourself....the stage of self denial is a very far stage that is very hard to reach...but its something we should aspire to. admit that you are nothing infront of your Lord, coz who are we without Him?
sleep....lack of it doesnt lead to depression, the point is not to just stay awake...its to do extra ibadah...if you are speding your nights praising Allah (swt), how can He (swt) make you suffer for it? you should sleep, we arent anywhere near a stage where we can go with 3 hours of sleep or less a night....but again the point is not to waste your life asleep
the signs and symptoms of too much eating, sleeping, talking are there too see......food leads to illnesses, sleeping leads to laziness and too much talking develops a bad personality.
those who talk less are heard more...and that is so true.
social exclusion doesnt mean entirely, not for you and me anway, for the awliya its a differnt thing.....but you can interact in this world, but only what is neccessary but dont do it just for the sake of doing it. live in this world, but think about the next.
work for this life in proportion to the length of your stay here...and work for the next life in proportion of your stay there.
also, stay in good company, as bad company is all that it takes for a person to start slipping on a steep slope.
reading about the saints can be a source of inspiration, and of course it would be great to see some living ones today....and believe me, there are wali-allah today...spend time in their company, for it is said that a moment in the presence of the pious is more than a thousand years of worship.
i agree on the struggle part, that is known as the Jihad of the nafs. the inner stuggle...to purify oneself and not become a slave of your own nafs.
i like the saying, and its true that you are a reflection of your brother

The Lover is ever drunk with love;
He is free, he is mad,
He dances with ecstasy and delight.
Caught by our own thoughts,
We worry about every little thing,
But once we get drunk on that love,
Whatever will be, will be.
The state of the one who loves Allah (swt) is affected by the changing conditions of life. Hence, at times he is happy and at other times he is sad. At times he feels close to his Creator and at other times he feels distant. At times there is affection from the Beloved and at other times there is anger.
At times there is fever and excitement and at other times there is peace and contentment, however, whatever the circumstances the true lover remains pleased with the Beloved (swt).
The Beloved's favors are regular, but His anger is occasional,
My Beloved is to be lauded under all circumstances.
It’s the month of Rajab atm….the month in which The Holy Prophet was blessed with a visit to the heavens.
The Holy Prophet said “Rajab is the month of Allah. Shaban is my month. Ramadan is the month of my ummah (followers).”
In sufi thought, intellect may lead a man to a certain point, but not to the target. However, if a man has wings of love, he becomes lofty in a way that he can never imagine. Just like the in the “Night Journey”... In that holy night , while the Holy Prophet and Angel Gabriel were ascending through the levels of sky , Angel Gabriel stopped suddenly when they arrived in Sidrat al Munteha (the highest place in Paradise) and said , ' I will burn up if I go a step further' .
But the Holy Prophet passed this point and came closer to God…so close now he was at a point of " aw adna" (Until He became as close as possible- Al Najm: 9)
So, Sufis consider Angel Gabriel as the symbol of human intellect, and the Holy Prophet as the symbol of love that transcends the restricted limits of intellect…

Sufism simply means linking yourself to Allah but the only way to achieve this is by going though an awliyah to get to the Holy Prophet(SAW) and then to Allah (SWT).
Sufism also means loving Allah and his messenger without holding any limits.

According to Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jillani (ra) in sleep sometimes the soul may find occasion to escape to its true home, the realm of the souls, and come back and bring news. This is known as true dreams
“Allah takes souls at the time of their death, and those that die not, during their sleep. Then He withholds those on whom He has passed the decree of death, and sends the others back till an appointed term. Surely there are signs in this for people who reflect (Zumar: 42)
The Holy Prophet indicates this by stating “the sleep of the wise is more worthy than the worship of the ignorant”.
We live in such a fast society…it’s very easy to get caught in the rat race.
Fast food, fast cars, fast internet, fast communication ect all means that we’re nearly always in a rush…..everything today is “faster” yet we don’t have time to talk to one another or to just stop and think….
Even the practising lot are always running round….be it in programme/classes/reading nafls/salaah etc….but despite being “practising” or “committed/active” how much do we actually remember Allah (swt)?
I mean, many of us are not lacking in the Fard acts of Islam….but how much do we keep the remembrance of Allah (swt) alive in our actions and heart?
Dhikr (remembrance) of Allah (swt) is the essence of all worship…..Salaah/sawm/zakaah/hijaab etc are all forms of Dhikr Allah (swt)…however, our worship often becomes ritualistic and as a result the remembrance of Allah (swt) is lacking…
That’s why IMO I think it’s SO important to attend/lead in groups or on your own gatherings of Dhikr….its much easier for the mind to solely focus on the beautiful names of Allah (swt)
Totally agree with you there. Its better to attend gatherings, Dhikr circles, praying in jama cz then your not in a rush cz every1 is praying togther and stuff. And when your in that company you motivate each other to do stuff in the correct ways.

Here is a summarised defniton of Tasuwuf/sufism given by Shaykh As-Sagharji at the Al Hidayah camp:
Tasuwuf is to empty your heart out of everything except for Allah (swt), and to have a connection only with Allah (swt). To not have a desire for dunya (world), to take yourself out of this dunya and be in state of "muraqaba" (As if Allah (swt) is watching your every action).
He also said a sufi is one who is physically present yet spiritually with Allah (swt)
Submitted by Dawud on 31 August, 2006 - 14:35 #616
True.
He also said that Tassawuf is Akhlaq.

Brilliant observation.
If only more people think like her, there would be so much less heartache, mental anguish and grief.
It is said that one way of checking that you’re truly sincere is when the praise and insults of onlookers is equal in your eyes i.e. praise or criticism doesn’t sadden or delight you....
...Imam Ghazzali said that there were many Saints who lives in the Haram but wouldn’t go to the Kab’ah to perform their salaah cos of fear of praise.
It is also said that the flatterer is indeed your worst enemy as he is the friend of your Nafs.
Keeping a check and balance of our spiritual state is not easy IMO….are we hating/bearing grudges? Are we envious of anyone? Are we doing things for show or for the sake of Allah (swt)? Are we full of pride? etc
Keeping an eye on our spiritual condition is unbelievably important and somtimes overlooked.

After coming back from the camp I realised how hard it is to maintain your spiritual state that you gained, very hard.
We were given tips by Shaykh-ul-Islam to maintain it and at that time I thought "yeah that seems cool" but now I am like it is realy hard therefore I have even more respect for Sufi's they truly are amazing personalities!

Sis, ur so right, i feel so ashmed, i cant even fulfil the basic simple promise we made to Qibla Huzoor.
I wish i could go back to his blessed company. It is so hard to maintain that level of spirituality.
Imam Ghazzali said “, "if a man says a mountain has moved, he is truthful, but if he says someone’s habits have changed, he is lying"
I have a friend who married a womaniser; she was convinced that she could change him after marriage, her marriage recently ended in divorce.
It is said that “the believer’s heart is between the two fingers of the Almighty, and it is up to Him to turn them how He wishes”
However, it is also said “Allah will not change the condition of a people until they first change that which is within themselves”
My Islamic studies teacher often states that a person can never, ever change.
According to Imam Ghazzali it is almost impossible for an old person to change his/her habits…after all, “old habits are hard to break”
However, doesn’t the “this is how I’ am-I can’t ever change-like it or lump it” attitude try to justify negative behaviour?
Do you know of people who have changed? I’m pretty sure all of us here are better behaved than we were five years ago….
I know of people who have had U-turns in life…this was because of Islam; however their HABITS often remained the same…
Can people change...?

If 1 wants to change their habbits and their ways, they must mean it from their heart. How can sum1 change when deep down they cudnt give a toss.Ones intention must be clear.
I do think its hard for people to change but it is possible. It depends on what company your in, who are your friends, the society etc etc. In order for ones habbit to change, alot of other things will be needed to change first.

i used to think that my soul made me do the things i did so i blamed it not myself - i was deluded
our natures are very hard to change
i often think about the soul. i want to see what condition its in. at the end i dont want a shock
no matter how i reflect how much i read i cant seem to glimpse it
all my life i've tried to find it - for it to help me - for me to help it.
i often think that if i dont understand it now then how will i fare in the world of nothing but souls - i'll be lost and i dont want to be lost i want to remember what i was and what i did and the lengths i took to find it.

i'd rather there was no other hidden thing and the soul was my heart

The Lover is ever drunk with love;

It’s the month of Rajab atm….the month in which The Holy Prophet
was blessed with a visit to the heavens.
The Holy Prophet
said “Rajab is the month of Allah. Shaban is my month. Ramadan is the month of my ummah (followers).”
In sufi thought, intellect may lead a man to a certain point, but not to the target. However, if a man has wings of love, he becomes lofty in a way that he can never imagine. Just like the in the “Night Journey”... In that holy night , while the Holy Prophet
and Angel Gabriel were ascending through the levels of sky , Angel Gabriel stopped suddenly when they arrived in Sidrat al Munteha (the highest place in Paradise) and said , ' I will burn up if I go a step further' .
But the Holy Prophet
passed this point and came closer to God…so close now he was at a point of " aw adna" (Until He became as close as possible- Al Najm: 9)
So, Sufis consider Angel Gabriel as the symbol of human intellect, and the Holy Prophet
as the symbol of love that transcends the restricted limits of intellect…

heres a good article about sufism:
http://www.thelightmagazine.com/issue2/what_is_sufism.html
"Purity is half of faith.......Prayer is the light...patience is illumination; and the Quran is an argument for or against you. Everyone starts his day and is a vendor of his soul, either freeing it or bringing about its ruin." Muslim
Sufism simply means linking yourself to Allah but the only way to achieve this is by going though an awliyah to get to the Holy Prophet(SAW) and then to Allah (SWT).
Sufism also means loving Allah and his messenger without holding any limits.
"Purity is half of faith.......Prayer is the light...patience is illumination; and the Quran is an argument for or against you. Everyone starts his day and is a vendor of his soul, either freeing it or bringing about its ruin." Muslim

The Holy Prophet
indicates this by stating “the sleep of the wise is more worthy than the worship of the ignorant”.

Wasalaam
Ws,
Totally agree with you there.
True.
He also said that Tassawuf is Akhlaq.
Gentleness and kindness were never a part of anything except that it made it beautiful, and harshness was never a part of anything except that it made it ugly.
Through cheating, stealing, and lying, one may get required results but finally one becomes

Wasalaam

Wasalaam
If 1 wants to change their habbits and their ways, they must mean it from their heart. How can sum1 change when deep down they cudnt give a toss.Ones intention must be clear.
I do think its hard for people to change but it is possible. It depends on what company your in, who are your friends, the society etc etc. In order for ones habbit to change, alot of other things will be needed to change first.
-once a playa always a playa
-a leapord can never change his spots
in other words
ppl cant change
i used to think that my soul made me do the things i did so i blamed it not myself - i was deluded
our natures are very hard to change
i often think about the soul. i want to see what condition its in. at the end i dont want a shock
no matter how i reflect how much i read i cant seem to glimpse it
all my life i've tried to find it - for it to help me - for me to help it.
i often think that if i dont understand it now then how will i fare in the world of nothing but souls - i'll be lost and i dont want to be lost i want to remember what i was and what i did and the lengths i took to find it.
sm deep pondering of inner soul is wat we all need !!!
A rose protects its beauty with thorns..a woman protects hers with a veil
Laila, Ramadan time gives one a strong insight into their heart/soul.
So do difficult/trying and testing times....
I myself have often been shocked when I've had the rare glimpse into my soul... :?
frst time i personally felt i had a spirituval glimps into my heart was at Al Hidayah where beloved shayke gave us a taste of his du'aa and which shortly follow by a heavy zikar.
A rose protects its beauty with thorns..a woman protects hers with a veil
the heart and the soul are they the same thing then? because i can usually feel what is in my heart and i rely on it a lot but the soul it seems like a shady being hidden from me
i'd rather there was no other hidden thing and the soul was my heart
have u Muslim Sister ever found out the difference or has anybody? - it would help alot to know this for sure.
mashallah!
Yup, that was the first time i cud feel my heart being cleansed and being filled with light..
Allahmdulliah...
