Tolerance of other religions

When discussing the sabians, I came across this bit on the wikipedia page:

The Saabi`ah Mushrikun were a Yazidan group who were questioned by the caliph al-Ma'mún of Baghdad in 830 CE, according to Abú-Jusúf Abshaa'al-Qathíí, about what protected religion they belonged to. Not being Muslim, Christian, Jewish, or Magian, the caliph told them they were infidels and would have to become Muslims or adherents of one of the other religions recognized by the Qu'ran by the time he returned from his campaign against the Byzantines or he would kill them.

So... are only the "people of the book" tolerated, or was the guy in the wrong? What is the bigger picture?

Blackwater changing its name

US security firm mired in Iraq controversy changes its name

Blackwater Worldwide renamed Xe as company tries to salvage its tarnished brand

Blackwater Worldwide is abandoning its tarnished brand name as it tries to shake a reputation battered by oft-criticised work in Iraq, renaming its family of two dozen businesses under the name Xe. The parent company's new name is pronounced like the letter z.

Blackwater Lodge & Training Centre — the subsidiary that conducts much of the company's overseas operations and domestic training — has been renamed US Training Centre Inc., the company said today.

'Plaster cast better' for sprains

People with a sprained ankle recover faster if they are given a plaster cast, British researchers say.

A study of 600 patients found that a 10-day below-knee cast is more effective than standard treatment with a tubular bandage.

The findings, published in The Lancet, are at odds with general medical opinion that the best thing for a sprained ankle is to keep it moving.

Up to 1.5m people a year in the UK go to A&E with a sprained ankle.

The injury accounts for 3-5% of all UK emergency department attendances and varies from minor stretching of the ligament to a complete tear.

It is commonly treated with ice, elevation, tubular compression bandage and advice to exercise.

Women and travel

Salaams

A couple of days ago, the subject of travel came up and I mentioned that I thought it was allowed for women to travel as long as the destination was not more than a couple of days away.

Since that was off the top of my head, I decidded to google it and see what the true wording, evidence for it was. One of the links I found contained this:

Women's traits 'written on face'

Women's traits 'written on face'

A woman's personality traits may be "written all over her face", research has suggested.

The Glasgow University and New Scientist study examined whether self-assessed personality characteristics could be identified from appearance.

It claimed that women's faces were easier to read than men's faces, with greater success in matching traits.

Glasgow University's Dr Rob Jenkins said: "We did not expect there to be such a difference between the sexes."

Dr Jenkins, a specialist in the psychology of social interaction, devised the study, along with Professor Richard Wiseman, of the University of Hertfordshire.

IVF: Right or Wrong?

Nadia Suleman and her ocuplets

Recently I read about the Nadia Suleman.

She gave birth to octuplets in January 2009.

This was all due to In vitro fertilization (IVF).

“I’m providing myself to my children,” said Ms Suleman, 33, wearing a black open-necked shirt, grey trousers and flip-flops during a broadcast on NBC’s Today Show. “I’m loving them unconditionally. I’ll stop my life for them and be present for them . . . and how many parents do that? I’m sure there are many that do, but many don’t, and that is unfortunate, and that is selfish.”

She ignored the US fertility treatment guidelines and asked for the transfer of six embryos in her uterus inside of the normal three that you are allowed.

Gaza to export Valentine's blooms

Gaza to export Valentine's blooms

Israel has granted permission for 25,000 flowers from the Gaza Strip to be sent to Europe for Valentine's Day.

The flowers will be Gaza's first exports for a year, as Israel has intensified its blockade of the strip since Hamas took control in June 2007.

The blockade allows in aid but exports are banned with few exceptions.

The move was made after a request by the Dutch government and Gaza farmers. Israel says this does not mean any overall change of policy.

Israeli military spokesman Maj Peter Lerner said the flowers would leave Gaza through an Israeli cargo crossing and were due to reach the European market by Valentine's Day on Saturday.
