Surma has health benefits

Well, the article is about egyptian eye stuff, but I assume it is similar to/the same as surma:

Cleopatra's eye make-up 'had health benefits'

The heavy eye make-up favoured by ancient Egyptians such as Cleopatra may have had medical as well as aesthetic benefits, French research suggests.

The study, published in the journal Analytical Chemistry, suggests it helped to protect against eye disease.

The key appears to be lead salts contained in the make-up.

At very low levels, salts produce nitric oxide, which boosts the immune system to fight off bacteria which can cause eye infection.

Malaysian churches attacked with firebombs

Three churches in Kuala Lumpur attacked after court reverses ban on Christians using the word 'Allah' to mean 'God'

Three Malaysian churches were attacked with firebombs, causing extensive damage to one, as Muslims pledged today to prevent Christians from using the word "Allah", escalating religious tensions in the multiracial country.

Many Malay Muslims, who make up 60% of the population, are incensed by a recent high court decision to overturn a ban on Roman Catholics using Allah as a translation for God in the Malay-language edition of their main newspaper, the Herald.

First steps (or how to introduce yourself)

Salaams

Are you new? not sure what to do? well read on!

You can simply jump right in, take part in discussions and make yourself a home.

You may however prefer to be more formal and "announcement" your presence and membership. You can do this by creating a forum topic in the forum or by creating a blog post if you have more to say in your introduction.

For the shy, there is the age old "Hello New members Wink" topic that you can post in, but here the introductions can get lost so I do not prefer this method.

Where to announce?

There is the forum topic that is ancient and has many announcements in it. You can say your hello in there.

If you are more daring, then you can also create a blog post.

George Galloway MP deported from Egypt, say activists

British MP George Galloway has been deported from Egypt, say activists working with him to take an aid convoy into Gaza.

The Bow and Bethnal Green MP had been with international activists trying to take 200 aid trucks into the blockaded Gaza Strip.

Egypt had refused some of the vehicles access and there have been protests and clashes on the Egypt-Gaza border.

The state news agency says Mr Galloway has left Egypt and returned home.

There have also been reports the Respect MP has been declared "persona non grata" and will not be allowed to enter Egypt again, following his criticism of Cairo over delays to the aid convoy.

"We the europeans..."

Just a topic for tom. the other topics are more polemic where you say what you are against and not what you are for.

So, how do you want the future to look?

Would you want a separate UK, or a united europe?
Would it be a tolerant utopia or a stalinist russia?
What other things do you think are important for the future...

I am giving you an opportunity to sell your vision, so please make it more about what you want and less about what you don't want - the other topics are making the latter more clear.

Land sales row mars Orthodox Christmas in Bethlehem

Palestinian Christian groups are boycotting celebrations of Orthodox Christmas in Bethlehem, accusing their Church of selling land to Israelis.

At least 100 protesters gathered with banners saying: "The Holy Land is not for sale," ahead of festivities to mark Christmas Eve for the Orthodox Church.

They accuse the Greek Orthodox Church of selling and leasing land in the West Bank to Israeli organisations.

The Church said it would not comment, on such a festive occasion.

The Council of Arab Orthodox Institutions and Organisations in Palestine said the current patriarch, Theophilos III, had continued to allow Israeli investors to lease Church land in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Egyptian soldier killed in clash at Gaza border

An Egyptian soldier has been killed and at least eight Palestinians hurt in clashes at the Egypt-Gaza border.

Egyptian security officials said the soldier was hit by Palestinian gunfire from across the border, during protests over a delayed aid convoy.

International activists have been trying to take 200 aid trucks into the blockaded Gaza Strip, but Egypt has refused some of the vehicles access.

Dozens of activists were hurt during protests over the convoy on Tuesday.

The violence broke out as hundreds of Palestinians began throwing stones across the border at Egyptian security forces, who fired back at the protesters.
