Justice on London's streets, the Jewish way

With his dark-blue uniform, earpiece and walkie-talkie, Nochem Perlberger could pass for a police officer as he patrols the leafy streets of London’s Stamford Hill neighbourhood. Like an officer of the law, he responds to emergency calls, visits crime scenes and pursues suspects.

However, he is a member not of the constabulary but of the Stamford Hill Shomrim Rescue Patrol, a group of Orthodox Jewish men who, for the past two years, have been “policing” the streets of their community in Hackney.

Why is willpower so weak?

Audio on willpower courtesy of the BBC.

Interesting IMO and a good listen. Not too long either.

Quick notes:

1. It is easy to overwhelm the will power part of the brain.
2. However, like a muscle, it can be strengthened.
3. Simple unrelated tasks can build willpower - even always sitting up straight will build up willpower.
4. Gritting your teeth doggedly and continuing with said task will not strengthen your willpower, but distracting yourself will.

UAE sheikh cleared in videoed torture case

A member of the ruling family of the United Arab Emirates has been cleared of the torture of a business associate.

Lawyers for Sheikh Issa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the president's brother, said the court ruled he had been drugged and so was "unaware of his actions".

The incident came to light when a videotape was circulated showing the violent beating, said to have taken place in 2004.

It was the first reported investigation of a UAE ruling family member.

His lawyer, Habib al-Mulla, said the ruling had "clarified Sheikh Issa's position that he was a victim of conspiracy" over the torture of Mohammed Shah Poor.

Interbew Q&A Technique

Job interviews can be tough. They will sometimes throw really weird and awkward questions at you JUST to see what you say.
And in this day and age where the job markets pretty tough, i think we should help our fellow members get a job!

The one question i hate that comes up in almost every interviews is:

Q. What are your salary expectations?
And whats awkward about this question is you could potentially undersell yourself or inadvertently ask for waaayyy too much and based on which they might turn you down.

I always say something like: My salary is as important to me as yours is to you and i just ask you be fair.

Is Osama Bin Laden dead or alive?

Osama Bin Laden died eight years ago during the battle for Tora Bora in Afghanistan, either from a US bomb or from a serious kidney disease.

Or so the conspiracy theory goes.

The theory that has developed on the web since 9/11 is that US intelligence services are manufacturing the Bin Laden statements to create an evil bogeyman, to justify the so-called war on terror in Afghanistan, Iraq and back at home.

So is the world's most wanted man still alive?

For a decade, Osama bin Laden has managed to evade the world's superpower and the biggest manhunt in history.

Bruce Riedel, who chaired President Barack Obama's Afghanistan/Pakistan policy review, and who has seen the intelligence on Bin Laden, says the trail has not so much gone cold as "frozen over".
