Wearing Perfume

Abu Musa al-Ash’ari said:

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“Any woman who puts on perfume then passes by people so that they can smell her fragrance, is an adulteress.”

So women shouldn't wear perfume (outside the home or except for her husband) because it can stimulate male desires, attract them to the woman etc BUT what about men who wear cologne? Does that not excite female desires in the same way, is it not the same thing?

Another thing. What about attar (for both men and women)?

Maybe it's all about proportionality? Obviously, smelling nice is obligatory but smelling excessively of perfume that's more risky. Modesty and humilty aren't the same as not caring about presentation! 🙂
