Ed, let the girl ask whatever she wants to ask. She will not learn anything by not asking. Its only fair that we answer as best as we can.
Im sure shes aware that none of us are big time scholars or such. Especially me lol.
Courage, why do you keep referng to her as 'mate'?
Well, that's my way of talking. It's the dialect, I call everyone mate, mate. Especially when I'm disagreeing with them, I prefer to do it in a friendly way.
As I heard one scholar explain (paraphrase): Birthdays are a NON-RELIGIOUS, CULTURAL celebration. We, as Muslims, are asked not to introduce new things into our DEEN (i.e. Islam). So it would only be a bid'a if we stated that birthdays are part of our faith, and celebrated it as such. It is not a bid'a if we celebrate it as a non-religious, cultural celebration. No-one I know has ever said that birthdays are part of the laws of Islam.
So long as a matter does not conflict with established principles of our faith, then it is acceptable.
Allah azza waj'al knows Best.

May Allah shine sweet faith upon you this day and times beyond. May your heart be enriched with peace, and may your home be blessed always. Ameen.
On the other hand there is no such thing as non-religious in Islam.
Everything has a religious context and meaning, for Islam is not just a religion, but a way of life.

When you celebrate a b'day you are appreciating Allah (swt). ie if i give presents to my parents its my way of showing happiness that Allah (swt) bestowed me with such amazing parents alhumdulillah.
I love birthdays
Haram is that which Allah (swt) has forbidden, so a meal in a restaurant with family/partner isnt haram as eating isnt haram nor spending time with your loved ones. Giving gifts is an act of genorosity which is always appreciated(well by 99.9%)
Well, i was 16 last year and i 'celebrated' my birthday, invited about 20 of my friends over and we just sat down talked had a laff, ate, played pranks.. the normal girlies stuff and then they all went home.. it was more of a get-together day off where we just did nothing but chill.. except i got loadzzz of presents haha
its not haraam!! otherwise my parents would have sed no.. if anything.. it would be bidah, definetely not haraam! lool at this whole thread lol but i agree, let Sumaiyah ask what she wants, after all she is learning and so are we x

Think how much money one would save if there was no such thing as birthdays or celebrating birthdays was haraam.
I personally dont have anything against ppl who choose to celebrate their brithday. I give presents and cards to family and friends but i dont like it when ppl make a fuss about my birthday but no ones ever listens
what i dont understand is why people make such a fuss over it, being a year older is like a gradual thing, if anything you should be mourning because your closer to dying. or could it be just be another excuse to celebrate

Dying isn't a bad thing (i kno i shouldn't say it but i wish i die young... atleast it'll shorten my time in hell! lol Astagfirullah) .... the thing is you are growing up... which means you are developing ur intellect and perception of the world... you're studying or gna do somma new.. so its a way to 'wish them best of luck' / duas for a bright future and duas to keep the lad/las oin the correct path... and be a decent person under the influence of good company...
It is not as if the wisher thinks that the person will get something outside the control of Allah (swt) [because there isn't any such thing]?

Or you could use that as an opportunity to thank Allah that you've survived another year.

Well why say 'best of luck'/'good luck' if you believe that Allah (swt) is control of everything?
If there is an element of 'luck' involved in life, that means that Allah (swt) is not all-powerful, and there is some other power that determines what happens (known as 'lady luck' or 'chance'). This is shirk, pure and simple. Its not an extremist statement for me to say that. It's logic.
Wouldn't you agree that carrying a four-leafed clover or a rabbit's foot around is haram? People do this for 'good luck'. Wishing someone good luck is exactly the same as carrying around a four leafed clover.

BEST OF LUCK/ GOOD LUCK IS SHIRK LOL
NOW IVE HEARD EVERYTHING!!!!
HAHAHHAH
YAQUB U MAKE ME LAUGH
THE FUNNY THING IS UR NOT JOKING!
TRY GETTING ANY SCHOLAR TO BACK U UP AN DI WILL BE SHOCKED
Yaqub ur a clever lad so for u to say saying good luck is shirk is shocking.
Saying Good Luck mate is a figure of speech, its where u mean all the best, hope it goes well etc. u say it when someone has an interview, driving test, exam etc etc.... its words of encouragement and support and for u to say this is shirk is ridiculous.
no muslim who says good luck beleive spower is not in the hand of god or destiny is in teh hands of anyone else. we all beleive in taqdeer. superstition is one thing....saying good luck is as mentioned above a figure of speech, worss of support, encouragement.
You are just taking it out of context and im sorry that is extremism!

See...that wasn't too difficult now, was it? Using punctuation and taking caps lock off, well done.
Regarding your argument, I KNOW that it is just a way of saying 'hope it goes well' etc, but its a figure of speech used for something haram: superstition/shirk. Plus its SO easy to avoid saying it.
Instead of saying 'good luck' you could say 'May Allah make it easy for you'. Doing that you actually gets a reward from Allah (swt)!
Which of these is better?
'With a bit of luck, you'll get home before it starts raining.'
or
'You will get home before it starts raining, insha'Allah.'
Just because it a common figure of speech, it doesn't mean we shouldn't avoid using it.
That is not extremism, it would be extremism if I said that 'anyone who says 'best of luck' become a kafir', but I didn't say that.

IM SORRY BUT THAT IS A LOAD OF COBBLERS!!!!
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH SAYING GOOD LUCK
YOU NEED TO CHILL OUT
BTW HAVE U SPOKE TO/ DISCUSSED THIS WITH ANY SCHOLAR? HAS ANY SCHOLAR SUPPORTED YOUR 'PERSONAL' VIEW?
BEFORE U START USING TERMS AS SHIRK U NEED TO GET ADVICE FROM THE LEARNED ULEMA.
I'm with Ya'qub on this one. I don't use 'good luck' either!
But with non-muslims, you can't really say, 'May Allah azza waj'al reward you' etc. The alternatives that I tend to use are things like 'best wishes', 'all the best', 'knock 'em dead', 'knock their socks off' etc
What about: May the force be with you!

Birthdayss Hahahaa!!

Ok...wishing someone the 'best of luck'.
That REALLY is haram.
It is shirk. Plain and simple.
Don't just do something! Stand there.
How/Why?
It is not as if the wisher thinks that the person will get something outside the control of Allah (swt) [because there isn't any such thing]?

Can Allah gice you lots of luck?
Chin up, mate! Life's too short.
Unless ofcourse you believe luck is from God. Bcoz what is luck other than good fortune... the strange one im a million kinda chance.
Luck is just a word for prayer imo. Wishing someone good luck is like praying to God they have good fortune in whatever they do.

That's all very well...but it's changing the meaning of the word 'luck'.

HAHAHHAHAHA
HARAM
LOL
STOP
I CANT TAKE ANY MORE
All right, he just misunderstood what Ed meant.
Chin up, mate! Life's too short.
I'll take that as a 'no, I have no idea how to rationalise my opinions into proper English', then.
