erm one good thing about knowing your mother tongue you can actually speak about your faith without any difficulties communicating. Our parents generation often mix cultural traditions with Islamic ones. Rather than mocking them if we could advise them in a language they understand that would be really useful. I'd love to know my lingo fluently for that reason. But that's not the only reason.
For example i don't know any scholars who give proper sermons in Syhleti Bengali for ppl like my parents. They may give small talks but in depth lectures referring to Hadith and Quran, i can't think of any. Most are in Dhaka'i dialect and parents can only understand bits. Now our community could benefit from Bengalis who actually know their language fluently particularly Bengali mothers. Bengali dads often know urdu so they can attend urdu lectures to benefit but the mothers miss out big time.
Polite? In oldham bengalis r the most unpolitest of peoples, wait, no-ones polite in oldham neway....ill let em off the hizzook then.

thats a very good point. alhumdulillah nowadays we have many youth who are practising Islam, it would be great if they could do da'wah to their own elders in a common language. it must be frustrating for youth who know their elders are doing something wrong, but they cannot communicate this with hikmah (some elders think youngsters speaking to them in english is rude).

I was eating in this place known as "Bangla town" today...my bengali friend and all the people who worked in the restaurant were speaking in Bengali....I was convinced that they're were talking about me :?
Often I'm with two people and one knows Urdu and the other doesnt...and the Urdu speaking individual tries to draw me into a discussion in Urdu and I ALWAYS reply in English so that the other person doesnt feel as if we're talking about them.
Way too many people use their billinguilism to backbite about others in front of their face.
Interesting topic even though only read a few posts
monolingual speakers find bilingualism so fascinating - at uni me and my mate were chatting and my mate does a lot of code switching (switching from one language to another) and a few of the monolingual students just stopped and asked 'how the heck do you do that? we have difficulty with just speaking English!' LOL
i think to an extent being able to speak in the mother tongue is important for effective communication with elders etc also personally I would like to keep up the use of the home language so to not forget using it altogether (a big danger of me doing that!) and then again it isn't and shouldnt be the most important aspect in regards to when it comes to marriage prospects etc and people shouldn't be put down for not using or knowing the home language.
Way too many people use their billinguilism to backbite about others in front of their face.
so true - kids do this at schools and use their home language to insult the teacher right in front of their face! Swearing in the home language is just way too common in schools and when you think about it if teacher doesnt understand it then he/she doesnt have the level of control that the teacher should have.
This has a really negative effect. So everytime a bilingual speaking kid speaks in home language the teacher assumes it is either swearing or negative comments whereas it could be that the kid is using home language to help explain the work to a less able kid.
i cant believe the mods never do anything about this.

lolz that so true, in our school few years back they introduced a new rule rule no 5 "no speaking in any other language apart from english," of course some usd it as an excuse not to speak french, Spanish or bengali in those lessons but they had to amend that rule and added only use of another language will be in language lessons. but its so true ppl backbite to the max, n use so the teacher doesnt understand like we would in bengali say any did homework etc but now however some of the teachers clocked on the bengali swear words i fink once someone called a teacher a dog in bengali and the teacher ended up swearing her back in bengali and called her a female dog[/color]
