Bcoz we're human and therefore prone to make mistakes.
Its not a question of Either-Or. i think both of the above play a part to some extent.

That before doing something one should think about what will happen in heaven and what will happen in hell and then decide whats the best course of action.
I think thats really good advice, but i dont think people will always think before they act.
One of the four Imams did (dont know which one) -she prob quoted them
Never the less its still good advice.
But i think it could be a little more real, in the sense that its still your choice to actually think about this first b4 doing anything, but if you choose not to weasle out of thinking about it and then go ahead and do the sin... you'd be no better than the animals.
It is easier for some people to abstain from certain sins then it is for others.
When a person enters old age his needs, whims, desires and demands begin to diminish. As a result the things that used to bring him delight and pleasure do not appeal to him any more. So as a person grows older his Nafs (ego) gradually begins to die and decay.
So, the punishment of an old man who commits adultery and a rich man who steals is more severe, this is because it is easy for them to keep away from such wrong actions.
It is difficult to commit oneself to the laws and commands of Allah (swt) when an individual is young; this is because of all the temptations that surround him/her.
This stage is very difficult, this is why Allah (swt) has promised seven people His shade on the Day of Judgment, as a mark of distinction and honour. Teenagers who spend their years as devout and conscious Muslims in the face of overwhelming temptations and seductions are one of the seven people.
So whoever has a strong motive to commit a wrong action and has the means to do so, receives more reward then the one who has no inclination to commit that very same sin…
do you really wana know why..coz after all we are going to heaven..i drink..sleep with different women..and i am muslim..i might go to fire for couple of years or even thousands but at the end i ll go to heaven as i am muslim..so why not enjoying this life & life after and you get the bonus of seeing fire.

Yes wise man. Lets all suffer thousands of years for a few years of pleasure.
Is it not better to control yourself here, where you are only for a few years?
And remember faith is a blessing for Allah. If you spite it, He may take the blessing away from you.

I think there is more to sinning than merely falling to temptation - and yes it does touch onto weak iman because if it was only temptation and nothing else, that wouldnt in itself be weakness in imaan.
I think to avoid sin/temptation, it is important to feel good about yourself and the world too.

The main reason why people sin is cos they do not have strong Iman (Belief).
As Muslims we are required to believe in the seven articles of faith, including belief in the Almighty, the Day of judgement and the hereafter.
If we really and truly believed at all times in the fate that awaits us in the hereafter, we would not be living our life in Ghafla (heedlessness).
If we truly believed in the existence of a Superior being, had unshakable, absolute belief in His existence. ……And if we were fully aware at all times of the fate that awaits us in the hereafter….if we 101% believed that eternal d**nation that awaits us if we live our life in disobedience….
We would never ever intentionally sin.
Our Iman needs to be strengthened.
Wasalaam
I don't think that's entirely true - we are not angels (and unintentional sins...wouldn't be sins, would they? :S )
But a strong imaan obviously would help a lot.

Guys... we're getting away from the topic at hand.
People, why do they sin?
Bcoz they're lacking in their faith somehow?
Or
Bcoz we're human and therefore prone to make mistakes.

Seraph. Come on man. Can't you tell. Asiya doesnt know why she sins.
Asiya. Please, if you would just answer the question.

People sin because, unfortunately, they like it.
The sin, whichever one it is, is pleasurable and will always be alluring. It makes them feel good in the short term.
Also, people know God is merciful and will forgive them. So they take a chance, hoping to live a long time, and plan to obey God when they are older.
It’s true that a lack of faith leads to sin. Those who love God know that you have to earn a place in heaven.
God doesn’t let in any old riff raff.
That sounds about right.
The allure of the darkside can be very seducing. Would explain this 'sin now... and repent later' thing that people keep doing.

well isnt that all the point, Allah (swt) testin us to see how strong our iman is so we can refrain from committin sin or at least try to?
I cant remember who it was (maybe MS) who said:
