North or South

that is gun crime.......not general crime!

Well...duh

have you never seen Taggart?

every week: "There's been a murrrderrr!"

Don't just do something! Stand there.

London is impressive.

Last night I drove a barge down the Bridgewater Canal out of Manchester. They go very slow, which is good because it wasn't easy to avoid hitting trees and boats and bridges in the dark, so the journey took several hours but I made it. I'm thinking of setting up home in one (but it would have to be pretty big). They aren't expensive and I could probably put moorings and a bunch of upgrades on the mortgage. Then I could officially live all over the place. Little Venice one week, Cornwall another. Dirol

Nottingham does have the highest overall crime rate in the UK.

1) Nottingham
2) Leeds
3) Greater Manchester
4) Bradford

Again all northerners

London ranked 29 for your information, which is pretty surprising.

Mr Honey, atleast you wouldn't need to worry about the rising sea level .

How do you count Nottingham in the north?

Do they teach geography down south?

For your info, "Down South" does not mean "London"

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.

I would count Nottingham as in the North.

Pfff, crime rates. I guess these are referring to the British Crime Survey because according to London easily has the highest crime rate. Also check this poll.

Maybe we should say that the best place is in the middle, round about Swadlincote. Obviously the further you stray from Swadlincote the worse it gets. Whatever you do stay away from Brighton or Scotland, because it is liable to be very unpleasant.

It isn't South. North of Birmingham counts as North to me. Maybe we should rename the thread "North, Midlands or South". And then I'll revise my theory and apart from a couple of Brummies we can doubtless all agree on the Midlands being the worst place. That makes far more sense than my Swadlincote idea.

Lol

erm nottingham is no where near north neither is brum. Brum is west midlands it could be regarded as "central England" Nottingham is more on side with the "east midlands" again no where near the north, you deffo have your bearings wrong :?

Nottingham is East Midlands but this thread is called North or South. I doubt I'm the only one who would consider the dividing line to be in Birmingham. You could hardly say Nottingham is "nowhere near north". It is more than halfway up a map of England and if you're counting Scotland, Manchester isn't north either.

Well i think the general consensus is that if your a londoner... or live around that region.. your pretty much a southerner... anywhere north of that and your a northerner.

Back in BLACK

What if you live South of London? Still a northener?

Lol. Serioulsy though, South and North londoners do have a distinct difference in accents...

Agreed, London has a lot of good things, but from what I've heard the people down there are rude and stuck up. The people up North are friendlier. Anyway, its way too crowded and congested.

As we are talking about crime, Sheffield is the safest city in England (Home Office), so the safest city in England is in the North Lol

The media, government, tried to blow us, but they can't out the flame, or doubt the name.

According to a study by Norwich Union (largest UK insurance company), car owners in the south Yorkshire city (Sheffield) are five times more likely to have their car stolen than those living anywhere else in the UK. The figures are based on claims received by the insurance firm reporting car thefts over the past three years.

The top 10 in full
1 - Sheffield
2 - Grimsby
3 - Hull
4 - Leeds
5 - Middlesbrough
6 - Bradford
7 - Manchester
8 - Grays
9 - Nottingham
10 - Doncaster

Nine of the ten cities are in the.....North!

I found this strange. This says:

Quote:
Scotland has the second highest murder rate in western Europe and Scots are more than three times more likely to be murdered than people in England and Wales, according to a study by the World Health Organisation.

Scotland's homicide rate is 2.33 deaths for every 100,000 people each year, compared with 0.7 in England and Wales.

Almost half of murders in Scotland are committed by people under the influence of drink or drugs - particularly in Glasgow, which, despite its successful effort to shed its hardman image in the city centre, is still plagued with violence in its east end and hinterland estates.

Scotland's second city is in fact the murder capital of Europe, with about 70 killings each year. Much of the violence is caused by gangs vying to control the city's drugs trade.

But this says:

Quote:
Glasgow has been named the safest city to live in Britain in an international survey of 200 cities worldwide.

The survey must be wrong.

Maybe they don't bother with the small stuff?

Both can be right as one is about general crime, the other about a specific type of crime.

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.

How can Glasgow be the "safest city in the UK" when Scotland (and it does state Glasgow) is said to be "plagued with violence".

and esp. when Scots are three times more likely to be murdered than people living in England and Wales.

Would you feel safe living in Glasgow.... I certainly wouldn't.

Angel, feel free to comment.

City A has a 10% chance for you being a victim of some sort of crime, minor or major, but only a 0.0002% Chance of you being murdered. (one in every 200,000)

City B has a 4% chance of you being a victim of crime, but a 0.0005% chance you you being murdered. (1 in every 100,000)

Which is safer?

One has lower crime, but higher murder. The other has higher crime, but lower murder.

So When a report is concentrated on Homicide, City B looks worse. If a second report looks at overall crime, City A looks worse.

Pretty logical really. Not something psychology willt each you.

The survey was based on personal safety so minor / property crime is out of the question.

We're only looking at fatal and non-fatal offences against a person.

I would still say that Glasgow is NOT the "safest city in the UK".

It depends on what you look at.

im on the border with the cotswolds so what's that according to u guys north or south?

Your comment refers to car crime. I was unaware of that stat, but I was talking about overall crime levels. Sheffield is officially the UK's safest city, also the greenest. Check out the links -

click on Sheffield fast facts on the lower right hand side and you will see it

It's definately not grim up North!

It used to be very bad before re violence mainly due to gangs but now it has calmed down but just heard the few days ago, 2 mins from where I stay a guy was stabbed in the head in broad daylight!!

Also someone was shot

Having said that I still feel safe :?

The above links for Sheffield seem to be promoting it by saying "Oohh come here to Sheffield, it's so perfect and it's the safest city in the UK".

Everyone does that, you just need to look around.

Everyone knows that Nottingham is one (if not the worst) city in the UK. where the overall crime rate (and esp. gun crime) is high. You get independent research such as Reform saying that Nottingham is the most crime-ridden place in England and Wales, then you have the Nottingham Council saying that the report should be withdrawn, that Nottingham is fabulous city with a thriving economy, and other 'positive comments'.

Different reports / people say completely different things, it's difficult to know who to believe.

Only thing is Nottingham looks better than Sheffield.

Apart from the thing that Nottingham does not seem to have a proper city centre.
