Blogging: Halal/Haraam??

Blogging has become increasingly popular. Thousands if not millions of people own blogs and its safe to say a fair few will undoubtedly be muslims.

Incase your a lil slow and dont know what a blog is its defined as a shared on-line journal where people can post diary entries about their personal experiences and hobbies etc.

Although keeping journels or diaries is nothing new what is new is the added interactivity and wide reaching audiences that can read them online.

On the outset it seems like a harmless pass time for Muslims as well as non-muslims. But if you examine them closely and read them collectively it is possible to compile an entire profile of personality and character... possibly even physical traits. Problem being Islam encourages modesty and caution when interacting with the opposite gender so in this light can it be truely harmless???

Can hiding behind a computer ,in this day and age with instant messaging the internet and sms, really be considered to still be covering up modestly?? I guess same can be said for forums (awkward)...

Now, that may seem simple, but the fact is that nobody can really ascertain as to what may cause dodgy thoughts in the minds of the opposite gender. It may seem tempting to write-off this whole notion by saying that what goes through the minds of the readers is not the responsibility of the author but while that may hold true for truly objective pieces of work and in matters of true need, the onlookers would not be completely to blame for not “lowering their gaze” if a muscular, handsome guy wearing boxers and a t-shirt were to unnecessarily walk through a group of women. The bulk of the blame would fall squarely on the shoulders of the one committing the unnecessary action, though the onlookers would be responsible for continuing to look even after they knew they weren’t supposed to.

Some bloggers resort to blogging anonymously, since it seems like hiding one’s identity can be a remedy for many of the potential problems that personal journals may lead to.

On the other hand some bloggers resort to blogging anonymously, since it seems like hiding one’s identity can solve many of the problems that online personal journals may lead to. Then again nobody would condone committing shameless and immodest acts in the midst of a group of strangers, simply because nobody recognizes him/her.

Im currently in two minds about this issue...

what do you guys think???

Discuss... whilst i go make myself some tea.

nowt wrong with it.

I am sure that if you are over confident there will be plenty of people ready to knock you back down.

yeah... but lets not stray from the topic.

I dont really have any problem with objective blogging where its a certain subject under discussion. But mainly the personal journals etc.

Which if you think about it really boils down to not giving away too much of yourself in order to amount to being imodest. But in this day and age if you want to get somewhere thats not really a practical option; infact people are encouraged to be outspoken as well as 'sharing' ones thoughts and ideas.

according to reaserch the young generation is more likely to blog then keep a diary

this is resulting in an exhibitionist generation

blogging can = showing off

don't forums pose similar problems? :?

Not all blogs are personal diary entries are they? iv'e seen loads that are political in nature? Some religious blogs, some about us domestic goddess' lol etc etc

but i agree with lil sis i've always thght its a form of "showing off". coz if the papers won't publish u and u can't get a book deal it's free to be published online no agent required and there's always an audience for you.

Did anyone hear "riverbend" blog dramatised by radio four, not too long ago. It;s the diary entries of an Iraqi woman living in Baghdad, describing the very real everyday horrors of living in a war zone? I was hooked on that, the radio version i mean. Apparently this blog had a huge following, i never read it online, it may still exist. I don't think she did it for the attention at all, she wants the world to know the reality of what is happening there.

Everything in Islam is Halaal unless it is specifically declared as being haraam.

Blogs can be useful, can be intresting and can learn a lot from them. I've read some really intresting blogs overs the years.

However, if the content consisted of anti-islamic stuff...i.e. girls and boys revealing intimate stuff about themselves...or contacting members of the opposite sex etc...then it cant be right.

precisely for this reason blogs such as the one you mention Yash are good because they can give another side to the story and usually a more truer one then the media

personal blogs seraph mentions well, if used with Islamic common sense then they are nothing more then opinions as those we give on the forum or to people in daily life.

maybe it would be a very good idea to get a religious answer from several alims before we totally rule blogs out

but on the other hand maybe we should avoid them because it seems that sometimes quite without meaning to we can expose ourselves in a way we would not if we were sure of the Islamic Boundaries concerning this topic.

to some people censoring themselves may come naturally but for many there need to be clear guidelines to protect themselves and others

i keep thinking of that thing where every word we say is written down and can redeem us or damn us

I think blogging is a waste of time if you're writing about pointless things like "i had blah blah for my breakfast and I fell 10 times today how embarasing" however like someone has mentioned, if it is useful knowledge then there is nothing wrong with it. Those people who blog their entire life have way too much spare time on their hands to waste.

So, you think it is pointless to keep a diary?

Only to the extent when someone includes info like i have shown as an example. The main thing with internet blogs which are used as an online diary is that everyone can view your personal details which one should keep to themselves. At the end of the day it's a personal choice.

If I was to keep a diary (if i could be bothered too then I would only include info that would be useful to myself or to others if I left it behind when I died).

The thing I mainly don't agree with blog diaries is coz anyone and everyone can view it.

not necessarily; there are features that only allow members of your contact list or friends to view them. It dont hav to be public.

I still do not have any issues with blogs.

Some people do not keep secrets. Or if they are, do not write about them.

Thirdly if noone knows who you are really are, is it not good enough? as long as there is no personal info...

Sometimes people just need to let it all hang out.
