I'd go for the kid. Not being able to live with yourself is worse than death.

I wouldn't save the kid.
Call me selfish but what's the point of me attempting to save the kid if I know I would not be able to save him and I would also die in the process.
It's like saying you have two options: kill one person or kill two persons. Obviously if you HAD to do it you'd go for the first option, so this is my way of thinking. However, if I thought I would be able to save the kid then I would go for it.

id say go for the colour film
now if you sed , you were stuck holding a tree amidst a flood and then you see a child floating away amongst the debris , if you let go and attempt to save the child you almost definately risk dying , but how can you live with yourself if you dont do nothing and let the child die , but if you do manage to grab the child your both be swept away and risk dying so what would you do :?:
Save the child.
Even if i have a higher chance of survival by hanging on to the branch... if theres even the smallest chance the child could be saved. Than thats enough to try imo. No matter what id accomplished in life theres the chance that kid could accomplish more. If you allow one human to die... then you've pretty much let the rest of mankind die aswell.
Save the kid... save the world.

But it's not your fault if he had died. If you had done something (like pushed him away from the branch you were holding in fear that the weight of him might break the branch) THEN you are to be blamed for his death. He died because of an omission, and not an act. So legally and (I also think religiously) you would not be blamed for his death as you would have died awell.
Reminds me of a story I read in a newspaper some months back. A guy jumped into (I think it was an icy pond in winter) to save his dog and he died along with his dog.

thats jus dumb :?
but back to the dilemma to all you people who sed no
I got home today and found out I've been sued by a mugger. That means some lefty ACLU fresh out of law school attorney actually listened to a mugger for 20 minutes explain how mean I was mean to use force when he was beating up some defenseless homeless guy. - And took the case.
The only reason I'm calm right now is my wonderful wife made me flautas and read me a chapter from the book she is reading.
This is a great test of patience - so far I haven't exploded (badly) yet, but I'm really on the edge.
The problem is compounded by the fact that it's times like these I could [i]really[/i] use a drink - but since that is obvious abuse I'm not allowing myself to. Which makes me more angry.
Writing about it kind of helps... she's right. I'm actually less angry talking about how not angry but almost getting angry I am.
I'd love to play with the kids right now but I don't want to when I'm feeling so aggressive - kids can read anger on peoples faces even when they are trying to hide it. So I'm going to wait for 20 minutes or so.
gosh sometimes i'm glad i no longer live in the states. that just takes the mick... how did the mugger know who you were? or actually don't answer that question if it'll make u more angry, poor annette's efforts will go to waste! she's right - stay calm, atleast you know you did the right thing. if there are any real morals left over there, you'll win the case God-willing (that's if it even gets to court).

Actually that's something that irritates me big time - apparently police reports are public record - thus when I gave my statement at the muggers arrest all of my contact information which the police took became available to him. Something about a right to face your accusor. So yes that's right - this white trash piece of garbage knows where my little girls, my wife and me live because apparently it's his "right" along with any other criminal. That's what we can thank the ACLU for - giving criminals the right to mess up your life.
bin der done it, wouldn't suggest it, if u write it down, its stuck wid ya, u get to keep reading over it and stewing over the same thing again and again

why dont you start a blog like everybody else in the world seems to be doing?
When I update the software for the forums, I could potentially give every member a blog.
Probably not a good idea though.

Drupal is very powerful.
The problem is deciding what do allow.
but I am planning to take it in small steps. baby steps.
The thing I am stuck on atm is wether to give you lot a basic BBCode editor like you have on here, or a full rich text editor. [url=http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/example_full.php?example=true]TinyMCE[/url] is really good, but it may be overkill. (I can decide exactly which buttons to allow and which ones not to allow...)
The forums and only the forums first. Next step would be the main site. Then after that additional features.

Suddenly you see a man in the water, he is fighting for his life, trying not to be taken away by the masses of water and mud. You move closer. Somehow the man looks familiar.
Suddenly you know who it is -- it's George W. Bush!
At the same time you notice that the raging waters are about to take him away, forever. You have two options. You can save him or you can take the best photo of your life. So you can save the life of George W. Bush, or you can shoot a Pulitzer prize winning photo, a unique photo displaying the death of one of the world's most powerful men.
On Bush's scenario, yes he's an idiot.
But life and death are in the hands of Allah.
Even if you intend to let him drown, Allah could save him by other means.
But if it is Allah's will for you to save him, then so be it.
Not sure how relevant this would be to the current situation, but the actions of Ali Radiallaho Anho could be used as an example to this situation.
When he was on the battlefield and was about to say goodnight to one of the enemy fighters, the fighter spat on him. Ali Radiallaho Anho stepped back. We've all heard that hadith and understand its core concepts.
On the spare of that moment, I dont think a persons got time to gather his intentions.
Is his intention to please Allah?
Is his intention becoming famous with the photo?
Is it out of rage?
When you've got the split second decision to make, my personal feeling is that you've got to try to save him to spare yourself the questions on the day of judgement.
The rest would be upto Allah.
--
My first thoughts let him drown. But then thinking about my intentions, and the wider scheme of things, it made me think again.

Exactly, thats my first reaction. Then someone pointed out it would be a split second reaction before the kid floats away. So I thought, I'm hanging on for dear life, whats my initial reaction going to be; answer? Be really scared or not think.
If I don't think, I'd go for the kid, if i did think I might not have time to save the kid because I'd waste too much time thinking.

Your a law graduate. Your father owns a law firm. Use your head.
Put something together like a proposal of how your being mugged could be blown out proportion.
The proposal should cover stress, trauma, feeling vulnerable as a result of the incident. Let the homeless guy know what will happen if your own case goes to court. Finally, it the homeless guy still tries to sue you. You were stressed and sleep deprived because of your newly born children and the guy scared you, you would not normally act that violently.
If it still goes ahead, bring your babies into court and make sure they act adorably, teach them to say "daddy" before hand and try to make them say it in court.

You got the two confused.
For the record He prevented the homeless guy becoming like the coma guy. Coma guy interestingly is good friends with vegetative state guy.

The judge accepted our MSJ and threw out the case - gave the plaintiff's attorney a pretty damn good workover too.
And the homeless guy didn't sue me - the mugger did (sadly this is a lot more common than you would think), all I really did was knock him off his feet and when he was dumb enough to come at me I punched him. Apparently I messed up his head and he can't see outta that eye anymore.
Well, here's an idea - if you don't like getting injured choose a less risky line of work.
Ya know it's kinda sad how many homeless people get mugged every year up here - think about it you get some poor, black guy already considered a nuisance by pedestrians, and he's carrying lots of change - it's a recipe for disaster. They've got the readily accesible money to go after and when people get mugged most everybody just walks away or stands back in shock doing nothing - doubly so when its not some mid thirties yuppie in a suit, but rather a social undesireable.
That's one of the big things I hate about cities especially up here in liberal land. They like to pretend they've cured racism, and it's us "ignant suthnuz" that keep the flame alive - but in reality they're just as bad if not worse. They're racist and won't admit it, they just push off the responsibility for acting onto somebody else. I think the movie crash really hit the nail on the head about that attitude.
Whereas in the South people are just flat out honest, if they are racist you know it, if they aren't they don't feel like they have to "prove" it.
And you'll never see somebody get mugged with a ring of pedestrians just watching - that's for sure.
I'd go for the kid. Not being able to live with yourself is worse than death.
