Insanity

Insanity is described by English law as 'a defect of reason caused by a disease of the mind which meant that either:
(i) he did not know the nature or quality of his actions or
(ii) he did not know that what he was doing was wrong.'

Or more commonly known as loosing it, loosing ones marbels, going loco, going nutts, the lights are on but no-ones home.

But back in the day, copernicus was thought a senseless, and a fool. He had the idea that the universe didnt revolve around the earth, but rather the earth revolved around the sun. But the people of that time may have thought he had unsoundness of mind, or a deranged mind.

Or perhaps insanity is not acting in accordance with societys 'norms' so they label you insane coz of fresh ideas? Okay maybe not always... im sure theres some real loco people out there...

So really, I'm just wondering what exactly is insanity? and is it always a bad thing? Are all great men of history that were ridiculed by society insane?

To quote a famous question: If everybody believes in it, does that make it true?

u know most of us will suffer from some sort of mental disorder at sum stage in our lives...scary huh? Wink

IMO the worst problem that could afflict someone is a problem with their mind/brain.

Its impossible to live with such a person.

True.

Very, very difficult...

Partly cos, mind problems are kinda contagious.

Like sometimes, extremly depressed members of the family make other members of their family kinda depressed too...Also, I think that some people who suffer from OCD also have the same affect on others.

yup sure is depressing seein sum1 else seriously depressed Sad esp knowin you have no idea how to help them, i normally freak out in these kinda situations

From my experience it is...

For example, I know of some mothers who suffer from depression and their attutide rubs on their children...esp their daughters who also become like this.

Even research has proven, that the state of mind of the mother has a positive/negative affect on her unborn child.

I know woman who has OCD...her daughter who is now a teenager also has OCD....another lady I know had mental problems...and her daughter was admitted to a mental hospital when she hit 18 cos she became manic.

The above examples could be hereditary…or an affect of the surroundings.

I often attribute at least 60% of the way I think to my mum….cos it was the teachings that she instilled in me as a very young child that I firmly believe in today.

And in most cases…the mother has a very huge influence on her kids, so her state of mind makes a huge difference on the state of mind of her kids.

I'm not sure how contagious mind problems are...but it cant be denied that the state of mind of family affects all family members.

hhhmmm if thats the case then things like suicide would also fall into that definition. Kinda worrying... i knew this sister a few years back who had a reli who committed suicide (i wont go into the details surrounding it) and i know she felt really bad about it coz they were close...

I did my best to cheer her up but i could never be sure with her.... hhmm anywayz shes alive and well so im glad it didnt pass onto her or any other reli.

mental illness isnt a flu you cant sneeze on someone and they will catch it

although it is hereditory and does run in families, especially schizophrenia and depression , although it is possible if your looking after a sick person you may develop depression due to the grief

also being depressed and suffering with depression are two separate things , many people confuse the two

you know mental illness is more likely to occur in ethnic monorities than whites ? i wonder why

I would define someone insane if they are not in reality , cuz insane people cannot distinguish between reality and fantasy , i have

anybody seen 'Beautiful mind' russel crowe stars excellent film

That's what I was also thinking, come on NAS lets have an explanation. I still got my psychology notes about depression from last year, will have a look at it later on.

Here's some facts about depression:
- Women are twice as likely as men to experience depression.
- Depression tends to run in families.
- There are different types of depression; bi-polar and uni-polar being two types.
- Race or ethnicity does not influence the prevalence of depression.
- Depression can lead to suicide, which kills about 850,000 people every year.

if ur depressed it doesnt mean ur suffering from depression

you see depression is a mental disorder of the mind caused by chemical (hormone) inbalance in the brain , basically when you suffer from depression you get depressed for no reason at all and dont eat , dont talk ect ect

whereas everyone gets depressed from time to time but it doesnt mean its a mental disorder , jus means that something happend and your depressed

big number , is that for england only ?

"NAS786" wrote:

No, its the worldwide figure published by the WHO (World Health Organisation).

It's an estimate so it might be a little bit more/less.

i think i need to check up on the definition for the word depressed cos im stil confuzzled r mayb im depressed lol

To be beautiful is to expect nothing in return.

Quote:
Depression is a common mental disorder that presents with depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy, and poor concentration. These problems can become chronic or recurrent and lead to substantial impairments in an individual's ability to take care of his or her everyday responsibilities.

Whats intresting is that...whilst women are more likely to suffer from depression than men.

Men are more likely to commit suicide then women.

Not in the case of when you're in prison.

Two fifths of women prisoners and a fifth of male prisoners in England and Wales have attempted suicide, according to official statistics.

At the same time…men make up 96 per cent of the UK prison population. So you can’t really compare suicide rates between men and women in prison.

Fact is, 75 per cent of suicides in the UK are by men. Also, even though it may appear that men less likely to suffer from depression than women….Doctors are less likely to diagnose men with depression than women.

I'm insane. It's great! I think everybody should take a dip in the deep end occasionally, it clears your sinuses.

intrestingly enough

a crazy person never believes that he/she is REALLY crazy

So if I believe I am crazy, that makes me sane?

cool.

I have heard that before, but I have no idea what that theory is based on.
