Consumer groups and health campaigners have called for a ban on junk food TV ads aimed at children before the 9pm watershed.
Food manufacturers and advertisers have been lobbying hard to minimise the impact of the impending restrictions.
The Food Standards Agency earlier came out in favour of a pre-9pm ban on junk food commercials.
Cancer Research UK, the British Heart Foundation, the National Union of Teachers, Diabetes UK and the National Family and Parenting Institute are among the groups which have signed the letter to Ofcom demanding a ban.
The move comes as the Governments releases its Health Profile of England, showing obesity continues to be a problem - especially in the North, where men die on average two years younger than those in the South.
