Two quotes from previous a thread:
I've started reading novels again, i was once an avid reader. So i'm in the library once a week for a new assortment of books. I admit i used to follow Oprah's book club..don't tease me please, and i'm thinking of joining again lol.
and:
When i was in school i dint watch much TV, used to read loadsa book, horrible histories n the teen horror series of book. The babysitter 1, 2, 3 and 4 are still favorites (they horror books not girly book like the name suggests).
Okay, that basically sums it up, I used to love reading (not non-fiction books), I got hooked when I was about six, originally on stuff like 'Dilly the Dinosaur' but then after my first big book 'The Horse and His Boy' (from the chronicles of Narnia) at about age nine, I was introduced into a whole new set of worlds and possibilities a veritable mirage of dreams and heroics, warriors, withces, miracles and magic, teen angst and other words to stir the Soul.
Oh actually, my first 'big book' was probably Enid Blyton's 'The Magic faraway tree' but that was read to us by our year 2 teacher, highlight of the week!
I would cane books to the extent where I would read about 500 pages in about 10 hours (so one day, had to do alopt of ducking and diving not to get the book confiscated! lol). I was reading alot! But started to cut down a little after starting secondary school, and in my GCSE year my mother literally made me stop getting books from the library! So I could concentrate on my exams.
Then By A Level she was pursuing the same policy but also using Islam as well to tell me I was wasting time (No joke she once came into the kitchen at about 7:30 am while I was having breakfast listening to some music, she shouted that I should be listening to Allah's shabbaths at this hour of the day and grabbed the radio and started smashing it on the unit top until the radio was broken into little peices.).
So I sneakily read a few books over the two years and that was that. What i want to know is why do people sometimes say reeading novels are haraam, I detest reading stuff with the sort of fitnah you wouldn't watch on TV anyway, so whats their problem/reasoning.
Discuss yo.
Ah yes. Dawud used the word "yo", he's tryna b normal...lol, joke. U still weird..
As for books, reading that reminded me of summin i read about one of Shaykh Abdul-Qadir Jilani's student wrote about them.
The student says that he had a book on philosophy, by an ancient greek philosopher, the Shaykh saw the book and told him to stop reading it. The student says that he loved the book and had read it so many times he almost knew it by heart. So when the shaykh told him to disgard of the book, he went and hid it instead, and thought ill get it when im about to leave this city. When he came to the company of the shaykh, the shaykh smiled and said, couldnt do it? Why do you love something which is of no use to you.
When the student was on his way out of the city, he went to collect the book, he found it in one peice, it was his book, but, when he later opened it, he realised that the writing inside it had changed, and it was abook by a muslim scholor.
The student says, Moral of the story, dunt waste ya time in book which are of no use..
Peace out

in that case reading Harry potter can be classed as Haraam shock, as it talks about wizards and magic and things which are useless!!!!
i have enjoyed reading aswell but dont think i did enuff of it when i was younger and now dont have the time. but i have always judged a book by its cover!!
Nowadays I like to read Islamic books, nomally classical books, Imam Ghazali etc. So, judgeing a book by its cover is a bit ard with islamic books.
But when i was younger, i remember my cousin used to read a lot, i used to askk her bout which book she read, n she'd giv me a lil intro to the book, which wouild make my final judgement. I missed out on many good books by judging by cover. Also, i find I do this with life in general, I jus look at a person and watch them do certain things, n i judge them, normally prolly always wrong, n its a bad thing to do aswell, but its a habit..
Still Digging?

I love reading although now i dont find as much time as I would like to read.
Back in the days I used to read a lot of Enid Blyton (Famous Five etc) went through a phase of babysitters club as well - I have always enjoyed reading and can read a whole book in a day if I want and most people find that really sad but I like it!
Now when I do read its nearly always Islamic books about companions and awliya Allah etc recently I read the biography of Beloved Nabi (peace be upon him and his family) by Martin Lings - it is wicked!

Totally been there with the girls books:
Sweet valley, baby sitters, loadsa Judy Blume. (Sisters stuff but I would read it anyway...I was young).
I liked the Francine Pascals 'Fear' seris (but thats not girly stuff, even tho she wrote the Sweet Valley stuff.)
I was into The Necroscope series (Brian Lumely-I think) and Ann Rice's Vampire stuff big time.
Loved David Gemmel, real inspirational writer.
Personal favourites are stuff like Animorphs, Dark matter/forces and Gemmel's stuff.
Horror books weere okay, but I prefered Adventure and Fantasy.
To me these books are useful, they can teach you (provided its the right stuff) Hiqmah, give advice and also help to improve your own character, by giving you the chance to empathise with the most righteous character and wanting them to succeed. Probably why I wasn't into horror, as the righteous character tends to have a knack for dying.
Nigel Hilton's 'Buddy' trilogy was awesome, I got emotionally involved.
Same with Dave Pelzer's trilogy, very touching.
A wizard of earthsea, I remember reading that in year 5 and finding that really awesome. Books are amazing experiances, and I've had some really good ones Al Hamdulillah.
So Share your experiences. What books were great and stood out for you?
Gentleness and kindness were never a part of anything except that it made it beautiful, and harshness was never a part of anything except that it made it ugly.

lol not many guys have that claim - you may be the only one!!
I read the Sweet Valley series as well - typical girly books. I hated horror stories and still do, I hate all horror stuff. One book that sticks in my mind from primary school is 'The Lion, Witch and Wardrobe' I loved it and so was well chuffed when the movie came out lol
i don't see how anyone could give a blanket ruling on all novels being haraam. :? sure if a book contains the sort of rubbish which is on TV, movies etc. then it would be just as wrong.
but there are still a lot of novels which really open ones mind. they may be based on true events, or outright fiction, but some books really make you think. and if they achieve that, they cannot be classed as a 'waste of time'.
books or no books, children always have wild imaginations, and this isn't necessarily a bad thing. depriving a child of books is in my opinion one of the worst things anyone could do. (but not a youth - dawud ur mom probably did you a favour by banning books around your exam times.:P my mom did that too but i'd always manage to sneak in some reading at school or at night.)
onto what i used to read when i was younger - very similar to muslimkuri - i read a lot of enid blyton, i think i've read all 21 of the Famous Five books. that was till i was around 9, after which i got into Arthur Conan Doyle's genius invention: Sherlock Holmes, i think i've read all of those short stories too, still am a big fan. might make it sound like i was a geeky bookworm of a child, but i did have a life outside of reading, honest! i used to read R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series, and a lot of Jacqueline Wilson in those days too. when i was around 11/12 i progressed to Point Horrors, read a fair few before they eventually got predictable and lost their scariness. since then i've been reading different things by different authors, the only fiction i've read recently is HP though. i dunno what happened but after my GCSEs i never really got the chance to go to the library and pick up some books, since then i havent really read as i used to when i was younger. i can no longer call myself an 'avid reader' and i am quite saddened by this. reading used to be a hobby of mine, but nowadays its difficult to find a book that will actually grab my attention.
edit: OMG dawud i just read your last post!! why did u mention the 'Buddy' trilogy??? i thought i had managed to blot that out of my memory forever, gosh i was in shock for ages after i read the final one. yup, those books really made u feel for the characters.

Guess what, Insha Allah T'ala I'm going to the library soon. Books (stories specifically) can be inpspiring and remind you of Allah SWT, I love those stories. Stories can have Hiqmah, its good.
Yep, read all three in order and after the last one...I cried for about 7 hours (in private of course!) I was actually angry a bit with the author, 'how could you do that?' I really was behind Buddy, and then...well you know what happened.

a 'bit' angry is an understatement when it came to me. but at first i was just totally shocked. was not expecting it at all. that feeling you get when you're on a rollercoaster - like your hearts just dropped to your feet and everything inside u has turned upside down - i literally felt it when i got to that bit in the last book.

I thin I read one of those about magic. I think I was reading that one when I got mugged (jahil days) what does that tell you?

I totally agree - kids need books, they are vital not only for improving reading skills but to also open up the mind to new ideas/experiences etc
That was the only time I've been mugged, I was reading the book while walking and and only noticed the guy when he was in front of me.
In retrospect, I should have said something poetic and the kicked him in the windpipe.

I remember reading the back of it and thinking, hey this looks good, then when I got to the bit where she's in the park at night and some druggie tries to sell her drugs, so she kicks the..er..stuffing out of him, totally wastes him for selling drugs in her park. I realised this was something I might try, after that I tried to read them all, but the library only had about four of them.
Anyone read 'Midnight Falcon' by David Gemmel, really beautiful, or Alan Garner's 'Weirdstone of Brisingaman', where One of the dwarfs, half dead, ties a rope around his waist and ties it tightly to that pole, pulls out his mashed up sword and takes on about forty of the other dudes trying to rush him; singlehandly putting the smack down on all of them while they stab him up until finaly he dies...admist all their corpses, That was so sick...and sad to that he died.

I too was crazy about Enid Blyton as a kid…I’ve read most of her books. My mum got me hooked on her books…inshallah my children will read her books too. She’s one of the cleanest authors I know….
I read all of Roald Dahl books…I used to read all the girly books as a teenager (such as sweet valley high etc)....
Now my book shelf is full of Islamic books…when I have my own house, inshallah I’ll make one room a library.
I’m reading a book titled “Tears of the heart” by Mawlana Rumi at the moment…its so beautifully written that it brings tears to my ears.
I really can’t get enough of books on Sufism specifically those by the likes of Rumi, Imam Ghazzali, Ibn Arabi etc etc
yeah i know what you mean the were rubbish read one of them n couldnt be bothered anymor, yesterday me n my sister dragged ourselves to the library n got some horror books, heard of Dark 1 and Dark 2 bout a girl who winesses a murder while trying to protect a little rich american kid?, hav u read the cheerleeader by Caroline B cooney

yea ur right it was called fearless, coz thats wot she was. i only read a couple.
i was thinking today of other books i might've forgotten about and remembered: the Point Crime series. used to read a lot of em in my last year at school. they were ok.
also some series which i can barely remember, really thin books about a nurse called Emma.
another thing i used to read a lot of when i was a kid (alongside sherlock holmes) were Hardy Boys books. i really wanted to 'be a detective when i grow up'.

RE: Fearless: can't really remeber which four except they were out the first ten or so in the series. Wikipedia has a short but pretty good article on the series.
RE: The Cheerleader by Caroline B. Cooney; the authour's name is familiar, so I've probably read something by her. Dunno what though.
Also anyone into Horowitz or Pratchet, those two are always good for a laugh, or the starnge forces/matter series by Engle and Barnes (I think)?
I probably could go on all day!

Anthony Horowitz, horror...Really? Wow, I had no idea, only knew for comedy, with a plot.
As for Paul Jennings, yeah, definately. Infact if memory serves, he wrote the 'Round the Twist' series which became a Childrens TV's Series.
Talking of Aussie books what about 'Belly Flop' or 'Two weeks with the Queen'? (last one was kinda sad tho)
