The ALL NEW Bosnia topic!

Salaam

The pother one is licked, as it did not really discuss anything. apart from what a deleted comment may or may not have been.

Use this topic to discuss Bosnia.

I will be honest and say I am clueless on this topic.

For anyone who has an interest in Bosnia, you should know that tourism is “booming” in Bosnia at the moment.

You should book a holiday in Sarajevo.
Try Vojvode Putnika and take some pics of the carefully preserved bullet-ridden buildings.

You have the privilege of waving the Bosnian flag for free.

So... how is the country atm?

rebuilt? rebuilding? ignored?

The peopleare they at peace?

and much more importantly... got any recipe's I can try?

Well... YOU asked for a split of topic for the previous bosnia topic.

Instead of talking about bosnia, all talk as about guessing what was in Omrows deleted post (which was minor really...)

I was not aware there was another topic before then aswell. I probably should have searched, but i find the search option pretty useless...

Oh, and accroding to google the bosnian flag was changed in 1998 to the one above. any idea what it looked like before then?

im surprised many of you can talk so light heartedly about bosnia, for me its an issue of great sadness, anguish and anger.

The bosnian muslims have suffered great hardship, the holocaust and ethnic cleansing of muslims was atrocious but what was more atrocious was how the world just did not care and the bosnians muslims who suffered the most horrendous abuse imaginable were practically ignored, not one muslim country came to there aid, this shows the terrible state of muslims in this current time.

if you think im exagerated , read these eyewitness accounts
WARNING: The following contains horrific and graphic descriptions of war-crimes

for those of you interested in the history of bosnia of the bosnian genocide

I have a some bosnian freinds and from what i hear , the experience of the war has left many traumacised but there is peace and the country is rebuilding

Bosnian flag is not very pretty is it.

I wonder who thought of that stupid design.

Omrow

Actually it kinda looks like the flag on my larger sailboat...

Any nautical connection?

It replaced a previus one in 1998.

Its supposed to be 'neutral'... whatever that means!

I have not found an image of the previous one, but I think it hinted at an islamic past...

Admin here is a website that follows the development of the Bosnian flag:

It looks like it basically reflected the heraldry of the empire which controlled it at any given moment...

I'm getting the feeling there really hasn't been an independent kingom since the Illyrians, then before the Ottomans, at the end of the Ottoman regime briefly then in the modern era.

yup had just found it:

Your link is very good.

From your link I can see the one I though they had was from 1878! (after the turks had left, and before the austrians came...)

Bosnia has many flags. Wide range of choices depending upon what mood you are in.

Which mood is that?

Is that the one Admin was looking for?
That flag is used when we are in a defiant mood.

lol I see that. The green and crescent is reminiscent of the flag you used when you ousted the turks in the latter half of the 19th century.

Husein-kapetan Gradaščević right?

From the pictures of Bosnia that i've seen it looks like it's retained a sort of Roman provincial/frontier style - at least architectually and in city planning.

Is that the case?

Inshallah this summer hopefully I want to visit Bosnia- I'm thinking about what project I can do in Bosnia- would help if latifah can be my guide.

I got that impression as well, has a medieval Europe theme to it.

Mostar Bridge:

Gorgeous isn't it, a lot of the pictures i've seen they've got what looks like a lot of stucco and brick and mortar buildings with red (clay tile?) roofs. Really gives it a mediterranean look - especially with the turkish high civic influence like in that bridge (can you actually walk across that?!)

Then somewhat psychotically intermixed this incredible landscape are huge hideous concrete soviet style apartments - like the ones in east germany

This is a pretty cool picture:

Catholic Church Orthodox Church and a Mosque

This Website:

Has got some amazing pictures... It's a really peculiar place archectually, it's got venician, turkish, french industrial, german and soviet architecture - it looks like for the most part the dominant themes are european/roman city designs with all the civic stuff in the center and wide boulevards and most of the 19th century french architecture in the center, mixed with more ancient turkish landmarks, then the outer areas and smaller towns carry the venician and roman style villas.

Then the really big cities have the soviet modernist expressions.

It's a bit of a crossroads isn't it?

Before the ethnic cleansing, was a vibrant place, Christians and Muslim lived in peace from what I’ve been hearing, something that can’t be said in Nigeria for example and other places.

nice pictures, Inshallah they can rebuild their homes

Throughout the Balkans, old communist influence still remains present.

(with the exception of the apartment block ofcourse, which just looks scary and dangerous) Sad

Silly me I've corrected it- I dont know much about South America or what it has to offer me.

This may sound ironic, all my Bosnian friends are studying HND and Degree’s in either civil engineering or constructions, I truly admire their steadfast determination.

lol well they won't teach you about the Falklands war in any British school that's for sure.

South America is an incredible place... no other word for it.

It's one of the last untamed frontiers on Earth, and one of the most gorgeous and I love the culture.

It is very pretty... it's like a combination of the mediterranean and those spooky woods around the Carpathians

Kind of rustic/sleepy like parts of Virginia.

I can't STAND communist architecture - those apartments are littered all throughout east Berlin and former [url= - totally obliterated Konigsberg btw.

It's like they had some sort of war on culture...

Latifah where in Bosnia are you from?

Did you have any buildings that looked like the really pretty stuff above - and what's the land like... looks really dense with forests and a lot of rivers
