I thought we're only supposed to fast on the 10th/11th?
cz the jews also fast on the 10th day of muharram, musa as received victory on the 10th and bani Israel were freed. so to differentiate ourselves we fast on either the day before or the day after.
also the prophet saw if i live till next year, i will fast on the 9th or 11th (not sure).
leme double check.

It has been reported from Abd Allah ibn `Amr ibn al-`As (Allah be pleased with him), that “Whoever fasts `Ashura’ it is as if he has fasted the entire year. And whoever gives charity this day it is like the charity of an entire year.”
It has been reported in the Sahih of Imam Muslim (Allah have mercy on him), also from Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) that, “When the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) fasted the Day of `Ashura’ and ordered his companions to fast it, they said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! This is a day that the Jews and Christians venerate.’ So the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) said, ‘When next year comes – if Allah wills – we will fast the Ninth [of Muharram with it].’ But the next year did not come before the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) passed away.” [Muslim (1134), Abu Dawud (2445)]
And it is reported in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad (Allah have mercy on him), from Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Fast the Day of `Ashura’ and be different from the Jews by fasting a day before it or a day after it.” [Ahmad]

Is there any extra blessings than normal in the first 10 days? cos I've never heard that before and don't wanna be missing out; I thought the best 10 days of the year where last month?
there are three lots of ten days that are considered holy, the last 10 of ramadan, first 10 of dhull hajj and first 10 of muharram.

I dont know if this year I'll be going with my Shia friends to see their blood rituals.
Every year my university mates invite me go with them in their religious march in the city.
I dont agree with slashing your back with knives.
I just go to enjoy the food which is supposed to be blessed because it is given in the name of Prophet's grandson.
The Manchester bunch sometimes really become too zealous and go over the top.
They end up cutting their bodies really bad.
I am surprised that for past 3 years no one ended up in hospital.

maashaAllah we had a beautiful muharram programme at masjid today, a small talk, naats, zhikr and salaam.
subhaanAllah fasting on the day of ashura was made fardh before ramadan, thats how important the day is/was! also, one who fasts and gives charity on the day of ashura, it is as if he has fasted for the year and given charity for the year. there is so much blessings in this month, may Allah swt gives us the tawfeeq to reap in rewards this month.

It is stated in Hadith Bukhari, that Imam Hassan (ra) possessed striking resemblance to his grandfather from the waist up, whereas the second son of Hadrat Fatima (raa), Imam Hussain (ra) possessed striking resemblance to his grandfather from the waist down. When the Holy Prophet passed away the Sahaba (companions) of the Holy Prophet used to knock on the door of Imam Hassan (ra) and Imam Hussain (ra) house, and used to ask them to stand together so that their grieving hearts may receive some solace.

was at the muharram program at farghana yesterday, subhanallah, Shaykh Ramzan went thru Shaykh Ul Islam's book on Imam Hassan and Imam Hussain (RA)....through hadith and commentary, how Love of the Ahle-Bayt is the Love of The Prophet (SAW) and thus the Love of Allah SWT. The Beloved Messenger (SAW) made it clear through hadith many times how important and beloved His two Grandsons (RA) were to him, and who the people of His House, the Ahle Bayt, were.
Jibrael (AS) asked the Prophet (SAW) to choose between sacrficiing his son Ibrahim, and his grandson Imam Hussain (or Imam Hassan...cant remember).........The Beloved Messenger SAW said Ibrahim. because if you take him, i will be sad. But if you take my Grandson, then not only will I be sad, but so will Fatima (RA).
subhanallah.........hearing about the love our Beloved Messenger (SAW) had for Syedina Ali (RA), Bibi Fatima (RA) and Imam Hassan (RA)and Imam Hussain (RA) truly touches the heart
