His Eminence?

I didn't think muslim clerics took styles - and seeing as I just spoke to a Cardinal recently, i'm fairly certain that page was snatched from the Catholic Handbook.

lol.

You haven't heard titles til' you heard one for a scholar!

Is it like the western churches with a predictable heirarchic structure or is it just a free for all of pleasant sounding names and titles?

a bit of both.

I think Shaykh Nazim Haqqani has a long one... but I cannot seem to find it atm...

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.

Is it:

Mawlana Shaykh Mohammed Nazim Adil al-Qubrusi al-Haqqani ?

And isn't the Mawlana Shaykh kinda redundant?

I thought you had to be a Shaykh to become a Mawlana... but I an a complete idiot on this

Its alot longer.

Mawlana and shaykh are slightly diferent.

Shaykh is guide. I am not sure right now about exact meaning of mawlana. something like our teacher.

Dave:

In Islam there is no hierarchichal structure, honorifc titles tend to be free for all to a certain extent.

In shi'te religion they have a structure, in Islam we dont constrict ourselves to a priesthood in that way.

Is there at least a restrictive set of titles and styles or is that a free for all too?

Or could I basically just be yusuf average and retitle myself "his eminence, the duke of deen, the sultan of sawm, biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaavooooooooooo esq"

If that's the case... that's the most awesome thing i've ever heard.

There is a bit of a hierarchy. Normally to do with Tareeqah's.

But not in the same way as christianity, or how its with shias...

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.

So it's not like you can just call yourself whatever you want to call yourself...

looooooooooool

Dave May ALLAH make you smile in the highest paradise.
ameen

Duke of Deen, Sultan of Sawm. Thats unique.

regarding his eminence, never heard it b4 i came here. Different sects have different ways of honouring their scholars. The salafiyya for example tend not to get carried away with long titles, those from indo-pak, both Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama'ah and Other can sometimes get a bit carried away when introducing scholars.

Normally it goes:

The scholar who will next speak is a man who needs no introduction. then they go on for five minutes listing his accomplishments. He is a hafidh, an alim, a jurist and a jurisconsultant. He is a the Shaykh of Shaykhs, Crown of India, the Protector of Religion, The Scholar of Islam. He is the divider between truth and falsehood, he is a beacon of light in this ocean of darkness, he is the medicine for the malady of this world. Mawlan Joe Public.

can get a bit OTT

Ya ALLAH Madad.
Haq Chaar Yaar

Ahhh okay now I gotcha... so it sounds like they have descriptive titles - like molvi or shaykh, but after than people just ad lib with whatever sounds pleasing.

All of a sudden that Imran Khan introduction at the Global Unity Conference makes so much sense.

Thanks Dust, also I was concerned about an article from his website about

Specifically point three:

Quote:
India and China will be the other super powers at the time. Imam Mahdi (AS) will send armies to both Europe and India/China and conquer the lands.

Which is very concerning to western ears.

I had hoped that the Turks and Ummayads were behind us - is this prediction an Islamic belief or Tahir Qadri's personal thing?

Okay first:

Sultan of Sawm...didn't Imam Zainul 'Abideen RA have the title: "Sultan of prostrations" as among other things he would offer one thousand rakhats (cycles of prayer) every 24 hours? (by the way there are 17 obligatory cycles of prayer to be performed by muslims each 24 hours)

Also Dave, you asked is this an Islamic belief, well generally all Muslims agree Imam Mehdi AS will conquer the superpowers of the time and bring total peace and reinvigorate True Islamic values.

However the specifics of the article..."Shaykh-ul-Islam made it clear that he has based all this from his understanding of the traditions. If he is wrong then it is his understanding which was wrong. If he is right then it is because the prophet SAW had given this knowledge through traditions."

Also Dave, we call Shaykh ul Islam 'Dr' because he has a PhD. I think its in English, American and Pakistan Law but not sure, definately Shaykh ul Islam has a degree in that topic and has lectured on it.

Shaykh ul Islam is a university lectureer, which is likely the reason we say 'prof.' as well.

Eminence I don't think is a word his 'regular' followers gave to Shaykh ul Islam, but ones that Other Big Shuyukh who follow him have. But I could be mistaken.
