Never actually been to an Aldi - I'm old fashioned and go to a deli and butcher for meat, a bakery for bread and a market house for vegetables and other produce - you get the picture.
As for cultural food items et cetera i'm lucky enough to come from a big city that has "little italies" and all that - so I just go to them.
I find shopkeepers take more care in what they do when they are small and specialize in one thing.

lol okay call me crazy but whats up with this ultrapaki identity thing going on in Britain?
Maybe i'm getting this impression because many of the people on the forum are pakistani - but pakis don't act like that here...
At least the ones I know have zero ties with "back home" - if you talked about back home they'd probably look at you funny and say something like "Ashley River Road?"
They don't really hang out with each other and their idea of ethnic food is a hot dog - with mustard.
Most aren't precisely sure whether they are indian or pakistani.

People are more open about their ethnicity here.
Those American 'Pakis' you describe would be bordering on cocoanut-ness if they lived here.
The low-lifes on the website attach ultra-importance to labels such as 'Paki' because they seem to have nothing else. It is because they have nothing else that they too emulate the 'thug' image.

Coconut: Brown on the outside, white on the inside.
Basically a shell. A sell-out

I take it cultural integration isn't a popular idea in the pakistani community in Britain?
Submitted by You on 26 September, 2005 - 00:26 #49
There is integration, and then there is assimilation.
Assimilation is not liked. integration is different communities living together cordially, enjoying each others culture.
Assimilation is one community totally losing their culture to join the other culture.
The former home secretary (Blunkett) at one point even tried to say that people should only speak english at home!
I only speak english, but the fact someone is TELLING me how to live inside my own house can make my blood boil.

why is it so hard to accept it is wrong to suggest/order to someone how to live in their own house?
what is right about getting people to change their culture, when they are playing a part in society, and are not doing anything objectionable/illegal?
how can assimilation ever be acceptable?

The thing I like most about America is that there is a collective culture - and then there are personal cultures (the ones from "back home")
It's like we have our individual cultures and gather them together for little italies or local churchs, mosques - jewish neighborhoods (like my main man at the deli) and little cubas.
Then there is AMERICA the big one - no illusions it is based in the western tradition as it was the framework of our society, but if you are coming here for freedom and democracy you know that and don't have any problems with it. But attached to that basic framework is the meat of the country - its soul, and it's comprised of a thousand and ten different little cultural pieces that we all decided we liked. I think that's what's really fueled our innovation for the last hundred years.
Immigrants still come here because they think they can succeed here better than back home - that means they are coming here to add to the success story of America. Their successes - in one way or another - become OUR successes.
So I applaud the individual cultures that keep us interesting and the greater culture than keeps us together.

It would be a tragedy if we lost those individual cultures - what would we bring to the table? Where would the innovation come from.

And I like chips.
Mostly fresh potato chips, cooked at home. sometimes undercook them chipshiop style, sometimes make them over crisp. Sometimes chunky, someimes like fries. Some times with salt, sometimes without. Sometimes with kletchup, sometimes without. sometimes white potato, sometimes red potato
As you can guess from that I like chips...
And they are brilliant the morning after for breakfast!
