Violent Protests in Libya and Bahrain

There are two contrasting approaches to the protesters in Libya and Bahrain, especially after the toppling of the then president Hosni Mubarak in Egypt.

Many people have been killed in Libya. Pro-government news papers having warned protesters that protesting would be "suicide". There was no pretence that any protests would be harshly dealt with and there had been close to a hundred people killed on Friday in the second city of Benghazi.

There are reports that on Saturday, the pro government forces went beyond targeting protesters with small arms fire as was the case on Friday. There are reports of the use of snipers and machine guns aimed at protesters with . (as a cautionary note, there is very little press freedom in Libya, so the truth could be very different)

There was initially much violence in Bahrain against protesters (where the ruling elite is Sunni, much of the population Shia), but along with the violence, the regime has also called for talks and on Saturday, the regime ordered the army and the police to pull out from Pearl Square (which is also a circle), and there are talks of dialogue, so the violence here may be diminishing.

The big problem seems to be Libya - there, the regime does not even need to pretend to look reasonable to the outside world.

do you think the situation in libya and bahrain will have similar uprisings like in egypt?

what is the situation in bahrain with the sunni and shia, are they united inj the call for freedom?

i know you are not an expert but i would just like to hear you're opinion and raise this this topic to others.

i would like people to pay attention to what is happening in the middle east as it hasn't finished in egypt it has just started in the middle east and even parts of africa

Lets reunite the ummah under one flag LA ILAHA IL ALLAH MUHAMMADUR RASULULLAH

It's not just the middle east. There has been a slow burning rebellion in the US too, one that is picking up pace, one that only needed the recession to happen and a black president to come to power.

As for Libya, Bahrain etc, I can't say how it will go.

I will however mention that south of Egypt is Sudan. This year, it is meant to divide into two, crudely, the Arab/Muslim north and the african christian south.

Why is this important? Two reasons:

1. The borders between Egypt, Libya and Sudan are not natural. Look at a map and you will see that the borders between these three were created by putting a ruler on a map and drawing a straight line.

2. Go back a few decades and there were various aborted attempted at unity of semi unity between arab/Muslim countries. One of the incarnations of the had a unified Egypt and Libya with Sudan also inside the federation (with other contenders being Syria, which had in the past joined the and Iraq which had shown intentions to join the UAR.)

(Just chop off the southern bit of sudan as that will go independent.)

I am not suggesting that this will happen, or that it will be a good thing - a problem with large entities that hold power is that the individual becomes a smaller and smaller part of the puzzle, and can then be ignored or trampled on more easily.

This is all assuming that there will be revolution in Libya, and that is far from a certainty as the regime is more repressive and more violent in putting down the demonstrations and holding onto power. There are also suggetions that it is only the eastern regions of Libya that want Gaddafi to go.

There are protests in Wisconsin where the Tea Party managed to get a governor in in their attempt at deconstructiong America and I read there are also protests planned in China.

Libya's Muammar Gaddafi has left his country for Venezuela or Brazil, as protests calling on him to step down have turned violent, a report says.

I take Press TV with a pinch of salt.

Too early for him to leave yet IMO, though if some of the reports of unrest are true...

apparently a nephew of his was killed in Benghazi on Saturday and one of his homes torched on Sunday.

EDIT

Gaddafi's son has been on the TV saying that Mistakes have been made and he accuses the opposition of trying to stoke a civil war with hundreds of thousands of deaths.

Apparently people have "captured bases and stolen tanks" in eastern Libya, which suggests that it is totally lawless now. (Al Jazeera suggests that it was simpler - to the side of the protesters)

He promised reform and democracy.

First protests in Tripoli now.
