ooh, the french are really going to hate this!

A leading French fast food outlet (the article calls it "the french answer to McDonalds" but its called "Quick Hamburger" which may make it sound suitably "foreign" and upmarket over there...) has decided to trial halaal meat only in a few of its outlets (well, 8 ).

Do you think people who cannot stand other women to have the right to wear a veil will be able to stomach (literally!) halaal meat in their burgers?

Or will they say "non" ?

I for one salute the courage of the chain to atleast test whether halaal meat would be a profitable venture for them instead of cowering to politically motivated and prejudice/fear related hankerings that seem to be overtaking the rest of French society.

That really does caricature the French hijab debate in a way that cannot help.

I suspect most of the audience on this site it from the UK, so it should not influence their prejudices in any way IMO.

(but does relying on that make it backbiting?)

Crazy has upped its ante: the french are going to sue!

French fast food chain Quick sparks halal burger appeal

A French council has lodged a complaint against a fast food chain that serves only meat that conforms with Islamic dietary laws at a local branch.

...

In Roubaix, Mayor Rene Vandierendonck, a socialist, called for a boycott of the Quick branch, and the town council has filed a complaint for discrimination with a regional court in Lille.

(and yes, I do think it is latent racism, or atleast prejudice, that this current "debate on identity" has allowed many French people to show in a semi legitimate manner. Not as liberal as they thought they were...)

From that same link, it seems that the move to halaal has been a profitable move for that particular branch atleast:

The Quick manager responsible for the Roubaix branch said there had been a slight increase in business after the introduction of halal menus and that he had not received complaints from customers, AFP news agency reported.
