Northern cities 'beyond revival'

Cities in northern England such as Liverpool, Sunderland and Bradford are "beyond revival" and residents should move south, a think tank has argued.

Policy Exchange said current regeneration policies were "failing" the people they were supposed to help.

A mass migration to London, Cambridge and Oxford would stop them becoming "trapped" in poorer areas, it said.

Could be. Are you using that proxy thing? If so, instead of that try hotspot shield, as I mentioned in the Unable to Connect" topic.

Personal statements and interviews.

Don't just do something! Stand there.

And work experience.

Chin up, mate! Life's too short.

Well sometimes the Unis won't penalise you if you miss the grade by just a little bit, they'll take other factors into consideration.

Anyone seen that shoot on sight yet? Was released yesterday. Looks really good

They've based it on that Jean Charles de Menezes shooting. The really bumish thing is that its only showing in certain cinemas so im gonna have to either trek it to Bolton or Sheffield to see it Sad

If your using the cinema for other purposes which i shall leave to your imgnation then yeah it is haraam but if you simply going there to watch a film coz its better to watch it on the big screen then some prirate copy then i dont see whats so haraam about it. Also its not as if its a porno film.

I liked the first one 'The Mummy'... the second one with the Rock was lame. They totally messed up the storyline. And the new one... mummies in china??? seriously... coz when you think of mummies, wud you relate that to china... erm no. Mummies -> Eqypt. Thats how it goes. And then they did the worse thing possible they cast someone new to play Evey argh.

So in conclusion this movie is super-lame and i wish i had 5 hands so i could give it 5 thumbs down.

This was a Shia Muslim who got carried away and broke the law.
No one should be forced to take part in any religious ceremony.
I think he got rightly punnished by the court.

Muslim guilty of forcing boys to flog themselves

Wednesday, 27 August 2008

A devout Muslim was found guilty of child cruelty today in a British legal first after forcing two boys to beat themselves during a religious ceremony.

The jury at Manchester Crown Court found 44-year-old Syed Mustafa Zaidi guilty of two counts of child cruelty.

The boys, aged 13 and 15, were forced to beat themselves with a zanjeer zani, an implement containing five curved blades, during a ceremony to commemorate the death of a Shia Muslim spiritual leader.

Zaidi, of Station Road, Eccles, Salford, also flogged himself during the ceremony at a community centre in Levenshulme, Manchester, on 19 January.

The boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted they wanted to beat themselves, but not under duress and not using Zaidi's zanjeer zani.

Both boys also admitted they had flogged themselves with a smaller zanjeer zani from the age of six in Pakistan.

A 14-year-old boy, who was 13 at the time, said Zaidi told them both: "Start doing it, start doing it".

He told the jury: "We said 'we don't want to do it'."

The boy said he saw Zaidi flogging himself with the zanjeer zani before washing his blood from it and handing it to the 15-year-old boy.

He said Zaidi was "pulling him and pushing him, 'keep doing it', telling people 'this is a sad moment and look he's not doing it'.

"He goes 'I don't want to do it, I don't want to do it'.

"He kept pressuring him, make him do the knife thing, pulling him, trying to get his T-shirt off, pulling and pushing him.

"He was saying 'just do it, just do it'."

He said the 15-year-old boy "swung it once or twice and said 'I don't want to do it anymore'."

He said the older boy was then pulled away by another man.

A 20-minute film of the traditional Ashura ceremony, broadcast on satellite television, showed Zaidi flagellating himself until his back was bloody and cut.

Participants at the men-only event flogged themselves, while others chanted the name Husayn and beat their chests. Many cried openly.

The Ashura ceremony takes place during Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, and commemorates the death of Husayn, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed and a central figure in the Shia faith.

Husayn was killed at the Battle of Karbala, alongside 72 members of his family, around 1,400 years ago.

Performing the matam - self-flagellation - brings out feelings of bereavement and grief at their deaths.

Zaidi admitted he had asked the boys if they wanted to beat themselves and that he allowed them to use his zanjeer zani.

He denied his actions were wrong, saying: "This is a part of our religion."

He said the 15-year-old boy had performed a "perfect matam" and that it was not a "stitching matam" because he didn't sustain heavy cuts.

He told the jury: "It was an emotional time and the children were happy, they asked for it. No one forced anyone."

The boys both received multiple lacerations to their backs, mainly superficial, with several deeper cuts.

Zaidi, a warehouse supervisor, also said: "If I'd known this would be the result of breaking the law I would never have done it."

How a Shia ritual ended in court

Zaidi did wrong. He went against Sharia law as well as British law. So it is right that he should pay.

Ayatollah rightly named America as "Great Satan".

mmmmmmmmm Johny Depp... I watched his Sweeney Todd, and it was AMAZING... poff ... he's a GOOD actor, bloody brilliant! Love his style! I based my AS Prodcut Design project on him, well not him exactly but Pirates in general(cos his new pirates had come out at that time)...

Ditto i love all his films they never fail to disappoint. He was really funny in pirates of the Caribbean and Charlie and the chocolate factory. Sweeney Todd was brilliant as well. Tis was sad when he realises hes just killed his wife. The graphics were really good as well when hes slicing all those peoples throats.

Edward Scissorhands is GREAT
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is GREAT (but not very halal...I saw it in my days of jahaliyyah)
Blow is GREAT
His later films are QUITE GOOD, he is (almost) always excellent, but the films aren't always to the same standard.

i was disappointed with sleepy hollow, i wanted a little bit more GORE but it turned out to be very detective like... again it's Tim Burton's work

As Seraphim would say hmmmmm lol. Now i will go onto elaborate the hmmmm. There was enough gore in it, too much gore would have been OTT and would have ruin it. It keeps you interested all the way, your always trying to think who it could be.

I would rate the secret window as okish was not good as the rest of his films. He played a serious part in it and it didn suit him.

Man convicted over Shia flogging

Zaidi had denied child cruelty
A devout Shia Muslim has been convicted of child cruelty after forcing two boys to beat themselves during a religious ceremony, in an unprecedented case

what do you think? shia's gone extreme? or the western media jumping on the first chance to promote news which shows islam in a very very bad light? before malik says the shia man didnt really force them and that they really didnt hit themselves i want to hear everyones views no matter what they are good or bad.

Come one it wasn't that bad! It was just thinking more laterally. You know, mummies don't HAVE to be egyptian. I would've given it 3/4 stars, I think they could have made it a bit better by getting a heroic way to beat the Emperor and given Rick and Johnathan a few grey hairs (they're at least in their late 40s).

And the reason why they didn't have the "kid" in it was because the "kid" was an adult.

Chin up, mate! Life's too short.
