I guess you'd just end up facing towards Earth. And maybe invest in some gravity boots.

"Good," said the General, "then you are reprieved. Executions begin at dawn, your job is to fit the nooses and push the condemned off the scaffold edge."
"Will I wear a hood?"
"No," said the General gently, "but your father and your brother will be blindfolded."

I met a Christian African Guy today (Black dude obviously)... and he doesn't eat pork (or any related substances), he doesn't drink alcohol... AND he doesn't believe in cheating on any one (stirctly speaking, his wife) AND no gambling... WHY?... because its "haraam" he said! ...

some one care to explain?
ps. He's a fellow employee
Maybe because all those things are forbidden in the Bible (They really are. Many Chirstians haven't checked for themselves).
I know lots of Christians who don't eat pork or drink alcohol. And the whole adultery thing is something they all agree on.
Why did he use the word 'haram'?
The only thing I can think of is he is from Nigeria or Ghana. In those countries Islam and Christianity exist side-by-side and there are MANY mixed marriages etc. The two 'religious cultures' are mixed with each other. 'haram' might be in his native language for 'religiously forbidden' because of the Islamic history of his country. Also, he might have used the word because he knows you're a Muslim so would understand it.
Its like in India many Hindus worship at the graves of Muslim holy men/saints (along side Muslims).
Say hypothetically that you have been discirminiated against say for example race discrimination by your employer would anyone here ever think about their employer to an employment tribunal or would you just ignore it and do nothing about it?

if it's a repetitive occurance then I would try to get a back up (for just in case purpose) and yes i might (looking at the circumstances and the mental health of the employer) go for complaining... but if it was like very rare and you happen to notice and blow it up too much for the scene then i'll opt for forgive and forget...
I've been taught that nothing's a scene unless you make a scene (which makes sense)... so hypothetically discrimination doesn't exist... its just the ppl being sensitive

I don't work in a Care Home... but i do work as a Home carer... its a bit like working in a care home but you go to the clients' houses to provide ... care
not the best thing to do it ... but if it means a good working experience, and pennies in my pocket then why not! anyways... its just a summer job, might carry on after sept, weekends only ... it all depends on the situation ... i'll stop waffling now!
cool. You get paid more than a couple of pennies it something like £8/9 an hour. Two of my sisters have worked in a care home its really hard work and very demanding apparently. One of them only lasted two days coz she was feeding a woman (who was paralysed) some soup and suddenly the old women had tears rolling down her eyes. My sis asked her why she was crying and the old woman said coz it reminded her of when she use to feed her kids when they were little and now they have put her in a home and dont come to see. It really got to my sis so she quit. I dont know how ppl can do that to their parents, its sooo cruel.

ok im gonna tell you something that happened to me and i want you to tell me truthfully what you think about it and what you would do in my situation.
4 days ago i turned up for my shift at work. About 11.30 pm i was approached by one of the night managers and told to follow him upstairs. He took me into a room where i was told by two other maangers someone had made a complaint about me leaving some "hostile" notes. During the course of the interview i was asked closed questions which didnt give me the opportunity to tell my side of the story. I was told to step out of the room while they came to a decision. They called me back in after 20 minutes and told me that they came to the decision to suspend me with full pay coz my notes were held as a gross misconduct. I was told i would get a letter for a hearing where they would decide if i get the sack or not. I was told not to come anywhere near the store or speak to anyone. They then told me to go and get my stuff out of my locker and escorted me out of the building like some sort of criminal at 1.00am!! (they didnt even let me finish my shift or clock out)
In the mean time i told my sis (who works for the same company but a different branch) to ask her manager whether they get do me for gross misconduct. Her manager told her that they cant and if it gets to a hearing they make try to make her resign, make out like its the best thing to do coz that way she can get a reference but tell her not to an appeal coz the company dont have a leg to stand on.
Yesterday i got a letter stating that they have concerns about the way the investigation was handled so now they gonna hold the hearing until they have heard my side.
I know someone off my department who a couple months back didnt turn up for a lot of his shifts and the few he did he came in drunk. Coming in drunk for your shift is classed as a gross misconduct and results to a dismissal straight away. My manager never grassed on him so he never got done for anything.
Now if this isnt discrimination then what is it?

Naz, I didn't understand from your post. Did you actually send the notes?
If no then can you proove you didn't? I if DID send them then can you try to apologise to whoever you sent the notes to (even if you don't think its your fault you can still swallow your pride and apologise).
I'm sure by law they have to give you an opportunity to say your side of the story. Have you got a copy of your employment contract?
@love to live bu... oh I made the assumption you were looking after an adult who was paying you. If you work in a home or like you are where your getting paid by a separate organisation then it tends to be less. I thought you wanted to be one of those optician ppl (you did tell me the name but ive forgotten)? When my sis left the care home she went onto work in another place looking after teenagers, ones whose parents cant cope with their behaviour or if the teenager has been physically abused by their parents. I dont know why she quit there but its not possible for my sis to stick to one job for too long, she gets bored lol.
Ive done a little research myself. If they give me the boot I cant take them to an employment tribunal for unfair dismissal because you must have worked for the company for a year and ive only been there 4 months. I dont want to do them for discrimination (even though it is coz of the way they have treated me in compariosn to my white collageues who started the same time as me). I dont even want go to an employment tribunal because if I win all I will get is compensation and what good is money to me. I dont want money I want an apology for the way I have been treated for the past 2-2 1/2 months. I dont want a written apology either I want one to my face, but I know I will never get one. The only other thing I can rely on is the working time regulation 1998. There are some articles that they have clearly breached for example maximum hours an employee can work per week is 48 ive been working 49. If an opt out agreement is signed then an employee can work more then 48 but I havent. However, they could turn it back on me saying that I could have said no. I work as an advisor at CAB and they have specialist surgeries, one being an employment surgery. The woman that does it is really experienced in employment law, gonna go and see her next week and she what she makes of the working time regulation. InshallAllah it will work in my favour. In the meantime ive raised a grievance against my manager.
@ Yaqub when you work nights the only way of communicating with the manager and day/evening colleagues is via the communication file. In that file you have the rota, handover (telling each individual what department they are on and what to do), holiday request sheets and any other concerns that you may have. Yes i wrote the notes but they are NOT aggressive and hostile which they are labelling it as rather they are sarcastic and patronising. I only wrote those notes because my manager ignored my concerns and I didnt know what else to do. That place is sooo big you dont even know who the managers are coz on their name badge all it says is their name. Yes by law they have to give me the opportunity to tell my side hence why they have brought it back from a hearing to an investigation coz they know if they take it to a hearing they will lose big time. Its nothing to do with pride, its about them thinking they can treat ppl like crap and get away with it. Im certainly not apologising.
ps sorry for the waffle i will shut up now.

^^^ no if you work for an individual most of the time you dont need experience. You do stuff like get the shopping in, cook for them, do the washing etc.
lol yeah the best thing to do in summer is to get a job, gets you out of the house plus your making a few bob before you go back to uni.
I totally know where your coming from. Most places want ppl who can work full time and/or with experience. Its difficult to get a career related job while your studying. Your best bet would be to take a gap year after your degree get some experience and then go back to uni to do your post graduate.
I think it was Optical express in the Andale centre was looking for a lab assistant a while back. They wanted someone who had a keen interest in that area. Its not showing up on the Andale website anymore but there is no harm in taking your CV down with a cover letter and handing it in case something does come up.
Im gonna go and see that women next week and see what she thinks about it. InshaAllah it will get sorted out soon and can get back to work. Ive only got one more pay day till uni starts and if im sitting at home all im getting paid is my contracted hours.

we can't have a gap year until we have finished our course thats why we have a pre-registration year where we work full time as an optom and after a yr of this we are officially optometrists. but to get there we need at least 8 weeks of exp. (any sorts of optical related exp would do)
lab tech not good! all you do is screw, polish, bend frames and weld/ dust the lens... i knew abt it being available but why do you think its still up?... most of the ones that i applied (ie covering letter + CV) were in Arndale centre... there were some in Stockport (mersey way centre) that i knew abt and were 'safe' to apply in... i even looked at laser surgery advisors in some clinics such as Optical express and Vision Express.. ah well what ever comes my way!
Insha'Allah u'll be fine with the situation, just be patient and it'll be cool!
Surely if you NEED relevant experience to get a job, its worth being a lab technician for 8 weeks. Its better doing a rubbish job in a field that benefits you than a decent job that doesn't lead anywhere?
My summer jobs happened to be in a law firm, but I was just archiving and filing (SO boring). Nothing to do with law! but that didn't make a difference when I applied for jobs at law firms, they saw the name of the company and that made it really easy to get work.

I've heard a saying:
"Its better to be at the bottom of a ladder you want to climb than halfway up a ladder you don't."
I think its something to do with becoming a window cleaner.
Don't just do something! Stand there.
i know this may sound a bit random, but i absolutely love that moroccon soup called harira, if anyone knows where i could purchase some, however far the distance, i would be eternally grateful.
