What do people think?

Massmurderer or scapegoat?

Was it right that he was released?

and what about US politicians jumping all over this just before mid term elections...

Scapegoat! It should have been the mafioso known as Colonel Gaddafi who was held accountable.

i heard he was a scapegoat.

but if he isnt i dont think he should be allowed out of prison on compassionate grounds.

can anyone post any link to his story?

Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?

I meant scapegoat in that the evidence against him was maybe manufactured and that Libya had nothing to do with it...

(though the shooting of a police officer outside its embassy seems to be more clearcut and less disputed.)

As for the current hoohaa in the US Senate... someone should remind them of the Iranian passenger plane they shot down around the same time. I doubt there was any enquiry over that.

don't think i've heard of him. who is he?

Gaddafi was a supplier of weaponry to the IRA back in the days of all those bombings of the 80s and helped finance them. This was an effort to destabilise the UK without declaring all out war - a war he would have lost.

The man is a thug and a tyrant, and the international community all knew the lockerbie bombing was linked to Libya. The only surprising thing is how we never went to war with them..

Its not as if the western governments were innocent either.

Though that does not clear of him his crimes, but there was a lot of stuff going on and out own governments were anything but innocent.

He is the guy convicted of the Lockerbie bombing which blew up a passenger plane.

Something else to add to this -the biggest backers of the IRA were the Americans. Our "allies". The support in and from America only dropped after others decided to attack places in the US - the september the 11th terror incidents.

It is kind of weird at the moment that some recent troubles in Northern Ireland have not spilled too much into the mainstream newsmedia - while there is mention of them, there is no focus being given.

I am quite sure a few car bombs have been found there, a few officers injured and in the past couple of weeks even one killed.

It may have been the "Raul Moat effect" where that took over in the news from other events. Even the mass murderer on the loose a few days before him who shot like 10 or more people seems to be forgotten.

True. The Irish Americans gave huge amounts of money to "Irish Charities" much like American Jewish charities give a huge amount of money to Jewish settlers in areas surrounding Israel.

And I also agree about the lack of media attention in Northern Ireland, and we all know that if a car bomb was diffused in London and the person responsible had a surname like "Ahmed", then the media would chew on that story for a month..

More than one car bomb. I think it has happened two or three times now.

But its not often we get cases of a killer on the run, or the one just before of a person who went crazy and seemed to kill like a dozen (almost) random people.
