I thought i'd open up this topic because me and my friends are not so sure whether the veil is waajib or not. I'd be glad if anyone found clear evidence about it. thanks.

what do you mean by the veil, the headscarf and full body cover or the face veil in particular?
da modest dress code is fard not wajab

The veiling of the face is an obligation.
It would be best for you not to display pornographic avatars. I request it be removed. Thank you.

 i dont think it is...
well in the hanafi school it's considered wajib, least that's the view i take. But there's differing views for example you get some salafies who say it's fard not wajib.
If by the veil you mean the niqab then it's best you do some reading on the issue, speak to your local scholars and decide if it's for you or not. It's a complex issue.

I have to disagree. According to some of the LEADING Hanafi Ulama today and of the recent past it is a simple and clear cut issue, the face MUST be covered.
Infact the other three madhaahib are even stronger on this than the Ahnaaf but unfortunately it is mainly the Ahnaaf of Afghanistan/Indo-Pak and the Salafiyyah who are perhaps still influenced by the rulings of Imam Ahmad , who still act on this simple issue.
Respected Sister, I recommend highly the book HIJAB by Dr Mawlana Muhammad Ismail Memon Madani.
InshaALLAH after this book the issue as per the Quran and Sunnah will be crystal.
Ya ALLAH Madad.
Haq Chaar Yaar
this issue is rather confusing.....
i remember some discussion in madressah.....some of the apas would say its waajib some would say its farz,
however we were all made to do it.
If it is wajib or if it is fard - in practice it comes out the same. The believing lady must NECESSARILY veil. And discarding the veil for the scarf and gown only is not correct.

i is joking
What you put in the hearts of others; is what goes back into your own heart…
but i've read enough scholarly rulings about the niqab being optional in Hanafi fiqh...

Yes Sister Dust i referred to the niqab there, in reply to Brother Med. But i'm not sure what arcane means by the veil, not replied yet.
brother i wish it was clear cut. But i've yet to hear a bunch of scholars point blank say it's obligatory no ifs and buts. If it's clear cut why don't the ulema collectively say so, too many sisters are confused over it. It took me a while to read through a mass of books before i decided it was perhaps wajib. But my overall reason for doing it was to immitate the pious women of the past, coz i'm sure they had a very good reason for wearing it, they are my role models.
For example well known scholars in the uk will do many a talk about the fard nature of the basic hijab, when do they ever touch upon the fard or wajib nature of the niqab, give me one example brother I'd like to hear their audio. I've only come across salafi audio which stipulates it's a must to wear niqab, as for the other four schools i've not heard any scholars give a talk affirming this.
I don't doubt the importance of the niqab,i would encourage my sisters to wear the niqab, but i can also understand why they'd be confused coz i once was.
yeh right... whatever... (in the words of Med)

sister you say deobandi but do you have any uk scholars in mind and perhaps an audio?
that book i think i've got somewhere...
havent really had time to read it.....have to dig it up from the libary
In the classical books of hanafi fiqh women were perhaps permitted to open the face and hands IF AND ONLY IF there was NO fear of fitnah. But this was not encouraged or thought of as good. However, if there was fear of fitnah then the temporary laxity was made tight and the face was necessarily to be veiled. Today leading Ulama of Ahnaaf have made it clear that the fitnah that abounds today was unimaginable at that time and so there is no question of unveiling.
There is confusion. This is because liberals and modernist Ulama e Soo distort DIVINE INJUCTIONS in an attempt to bring people closer to the deen.
Why have the ulama not spoken so much about this?
Good question and the ulama will be held accountable if they have hidden or distorted the shariah. We have to be aware of certain things. I maintain that the vast majority of people are sheep, and this goes for the ulama as well. It will be noted that among the Ulama of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah they will be very comfortable in declaring the kufr of the Qadianis but they will not be so vocal in exposing the kufr of the shi'a because they see that being done less.
Similarly many ulama I am certain are aware fully of the ruling but for fear of people and not to appear extreme or rigid etc they maintain silence. This is khiyaanah - breach of trust.
You require one tape in english - I refer you the tape Hijab by Mawlana Riyadh ul Haq Sahib. I warn you it may be difficult to get hold of this tape - but perhaps if your husband has any connections with Shaykhs mureeds they should be able to provide a copy. MashaALLAH that tape makes the hanafi ruling clear as crystal as well as expounding on the rulings of the other three madhaahib.
If you want in urdu/bangla then I am sure the Ulama of Darul Uloom, Coventry Road (bengali speaking) will be more than capable of providing the rulings.
 PERHAPS contact the Jamia where Naj studied.
Ya ALLAH Madad.

brother jazak'Allah for the information. It so happens i've heard that tape by sheikh Riyadul Haq, my husband has a copy. It dealt more so with the issue of the basic hijab i.e headscarf and jilbab rather than the niqab if i remember correctly?
I can remember a little joke he made about the misconceptions surrounding the niqab, but to be honest don't remember much else. I'll try and listen to it again insha'Allah see if there's any detail there.
P.S don't understand dhaka dialect bengali very well, most islamic material in this dialect, need syhleti ones. don't understand urdu apart from the odd words
Perhaps my memory is deceiving me and Mawlana did not mention in detail.
No problem, I am unaware of Mawlana Riyadh ul Haq's position on many things nowadays but perhaps any1 who is interested could contact Islamic Da'wah Academy Leicester and make contact with Mawlana Muhammad Saleem Dhorat, or any ladies who are interested can put me in contact with their menfolk and I will find them loads of ulama in birmingham to make issue clear.
Ya ALLAH Madad.

doesnt the real meaning of HIJAAB mean 'something that covers and conceals completely'
i think its often taken to mean just the headscarf :?
Med is this what u were referring to: http://www.idauk.org/pub/leaf/women/23.html :?: yeh majority of the deobandi scholars i have heard speaking on the matter say it is atleast wajib for women to wear niqab, due to the fitnah in our society - note: the face is not part of a woman's awrah, but for the given reason it should also be covered (according to deobandi scholars). namely Maulana Adam, his son Mufti Muhammad 'ibn Adam Al-Kawthari', Maulana Saleem Dhorat (who Med mentioned) among others.
sorry i cant provide u with any audio links as i rarely listen to talks on the net, med or yuit might know more about that? i'll see if there's any written rulings on the net by these scholars... a sec.

I hope it's not a replacement for 'Ahlul Bidah'.
oh yeh thanx for reminding me irf, i meant to comment on this:
Med, u could not get MORE condescending than that^! do u mind changing that tone?!
