nope it isn't, not as far as i know anyway. On the other hand knowing what it actually says is important.

Is it important though? because all I hear from all my relatives and mosque teachers is how important it is know the Qur'an of by heart etc.
its reaaaaaaaaaally good not important/compulsory. Ofcourse its a good thing people are encouraging u to do it but u don't have to afaik.

It is important that you know enough for salaah - surah fateha plus a few other verses.
Beyond that less so.
People emphasise how important it is to read it but forget to mention the other side of the coin - it is also important (maybe more so) to not forget it after learning.
So only memorise the amount you think you can remember and keep on top of for life.

i think it is important second to salah. in fact first in a way since salah involves the recitation of the Quran. There are so many benefits to memorizing the Quran whether you understand it or not you can only reap rewards from such a great undertaking.
In the early days of Islam memorizing was a must. Even today in African countries Arab countries it is the norm for all siblings in family to memorize Quran from an early age. It's like a rite of passage that siblings compete with each other for. I think it is a great shame that muslims in western countries are losing this tradition. Yes ppl still memorize but fewer do. Main reason cited "i'm too busy". But are we really any more busier than ppl of bygone years? I don't think we are. I remember my husband telling me this old man like 50. he said he was here studying. But he wanted to memorize the Quran before he went back to Somalia at end of uni studies. The teachers did not think he could do so in short time, and due to age, but he did. So i guess it's never too late not even for me.
If you are still young this is the best time, and if you have the drive and sincerity Allah will make it easy for you. I think you should, but you know best if you have the commitment and sincere intentions to do it.
I plan to have all my kids memorize Quran as a mimimum. My 3 yr old is already on his way there.
