i dont know Angel i always thought it would be the opposite sex then there would be a complete relationship

i suppose same sex could work but when they say soul mate i took it to mean mate as in husband/wife partner

Yeh thats what i have always heard but once someone said to me it could mean someone who is just genuinely close to you but i supose the "soul" in soul mate shows completion with your husband or wife.

i wonder if Islam does say there is such a thing then if there is and if we do not meet the soul mate here then if we are very good perhaps we will in the hereafter

I don't think a "soul mate" has to be ones partner.

Cos in too many cases...husbands and wives are SO different from one another.

I would have thought it would be a best mate. Personally, I have never come across someone who understands me 101% and vice versa.

This affair of the soul mates reuniting from the past life deserve a separate thread.

not really

The Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him) said: ‘Souls are like conscripted soldiers; those whom they recognize, they get along with, and those whom they do not recognize, they will not get along with.’ (Bukhaari)

Ibn Hajar did a commentary on this hadith and said “It could be that what is being referred to is the beginning of creation in the realm of the unseen when, it is reported, souls were created before bodies, and used to meet one another and express their pessimism about the future. When souls have entered bodies (come to the physical realm) they may recognize one another from the past, and may be on friendly terms or otherwise based on that past experience.”

Interesting i never really knew that. It is true that with some people you do tend to click with so much quicker and though you may have know them for months only, it always seem much longer. But saying that, I never got this soul mate stuff to be honest, i do believe people are destine to be with each other, but saying that when i hear people talking about their soul mate in public, i find it soppy.

Yes. Perhaps one is inhibited here. After all, its a perennial ideal.

However, at a different place and in a different time, one can
say so much to one's beloved and talk at length on matters of the heart.

Omrow

I thought I had met my soul mate. But I was wrong as usual.

No truer words were ever uttered.

You are so right.

One cannot be a true mystic unless one is also a true lover.

My question was serious. Thank you Aasiya this thread was intresting. So basically Sufism is about being a better person and focusing on sins you cant see. Why are some people against this?

"Ramz" wrote:

I don't think anyone is actually against the concept of purifying oneself or any of the major principles of sufism. I think where the critism come from is in some of the action, which many people have adapted into some unislamic principle, this is mainly due to the hippy influence (so i have been led to believe by my sufi friend)

Plus sufism is a very deep subject, which not everyone can probably understand, i know i one of them. But i think to truely understand what sufism is about, you need to see a true sufi, unfortunately there isn't much around anymore in the present environment we live in. But i believe i seen some shaykhs that are true sufi, how do i know, because whenever i think about them, i get that warm feeling inside and my love for islam grows. But as i said it very rare quality found in people today.

How deep. I must say that this topic intrests me more then most subjects within Islam. I read all the pages in this thread and even all the pages in the old forum. I even got a book on the basics of sufism from my local library today.

So don't be annoyed when I badger you with silly questions.

Badger away, it the only way we can really learn. Sufism is something that i always found interesting as well, too be honest the best discussion on the subject is on the old forum where Eazy D and True2islam ask some very good questions and of course Muslim Sis general comments on the subject. This thread hasn't quite lived up to the other one.

But one conclusion i have come on Sufism, is too truely understand it, i think it best to travel too some of the middle eastern countries and see how it is practice. I been told it a very profound experience. Inshallah it something i would love too do.

My book spoke about not caring about the world and all that is in it. I thought that was very very deep. I liked the concept but I couldnt understand it fully.

Also what does zikr mean? Ive read too many meanings in this one word.

Salam

Zikr means thinking about God: His words. His works. His very nature.

Basically, it means remembering God.

Some crazy muslims think it means repeatedly saying "Allah Hoo" a million times !!
