The Spy Who Knew Too Much

Would you say its generally wrong to spy on people? (assuming its not your job or anything)

Just coz your a busy-body and want to know stuff. So things like eaves-dropping, going through their stuff etc.

What if they're family? Does that make a difference?

Does it matter if they've given you reason to be suspicious or otherwise?

I think there is a hadith that if you open someone else's mail, you have their permission to go straight to hell. or something like that.

Privacy is very important - so much so that even confession of sins to another person is something not generally encouraged.

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.

There is a story of when Umar (ra) was the Caliph, he heard some odd noises coming from inside someone's home and looked over their wall to see a man doing something *extremely* haraam. When he said something about the sin, then man replied that (can't remember it that well, but approximately) "you spying is worse than the act I am doing," to which Umar (ra) replied that the man was correct, and then left the man to finish.

I know I recounted that story really badly - I hope I remembered the gist and point of it, anyway.

Don't just do something! Stand there.

So a career in mi5 is out ... damn.

Not all the posts in Mi5 are related to spying.

Man, you just destroyed the story.

Umar (ra) when he was the leader, was walking and he heard some noises and saw over the wall that a man was listening to music with dancing women. He jumped over the wall and confronted the man. But the man said, I did one thing wrong but you did three things wrong. Umar (ra) asked what did I do? So the man said Allah says in the Quran, do not spy on each other, you did that. Allah also says enter through the front door, you came from the back. And Allah also says gain permission before entering someone's home but you didn't. So Umar (ra) left the man alone and went on his way.

If that happened in an Arab country today, the man probably would have been tortured.
