I dont know, but in pakis- kids tend to have their fathers name as their surname...
I have my fathers name as a surname, and loads of people i know....its not the surname of my father thats passed down...
I wont like that idea with my own kids....the surname of my husband shall be the surname of my kids.
That's kinda weird... some people do the hyphen thing if they come from an important family on their mother's side, but the father's name should be the surname, since he is the head of the house.

maybe thats done in the western thing.....un heard of again in asians,
but hold on you were calling it weird and you just go the fathers name should be the surname :?

I know a few people who also have their husband's first name as their surname after marriage for e.g Miss A B marrys Mr X Y so she changes her name to Mrs A X and then the kids will also have their fathers first name!
Wheras me and my sisters have our Mothers first name as our surname! Its a bit wierd i know and i would have so preffered having my Fathers name as my surname

some girls just end up having the surname bibi and begum, random stuff not bearing with the mothers or fathers name. Its funny thought wouldnt like that.
Islamically the wife does not have to adopt the name of her husband. and mostly they do not.
Thus when this is extended to chidren there is surname-mania. anything goes.

Not always. Note the Akhtar, and Bibi, and a few others for girls. They are generic I think, or taken from mother.

akhtar is a mens name too is it not? but yea, i've noticed the 'bibis' and 'begums'... i guess if its generic then fair enough, but islamically we can't take our mother's maiden name anyway because a person should be attributed to the father.

What's with lineage in Islam? I noticed there is a real careful attention to where you come from - I personally think it's pretty cool, on my top 5 favorite things about Islam, but is there some sort of religious reason for all this or is it something that worked into the culture?

yea its major - there is a hadith in Sahih Muslim that says the Prophet said whoever attributes himself to someone other than his own father has committed an act of unbelief. (sorry i do not have it handy so dont take that as an exact quote)
as to why it is so important, good question, off the top of my head i cant remember the answer, will find out and get back to u, but i agree, it is SO cool (i know my lineage way back by heart).

halal way was to marry them take them with them,
women left widowed due to war, or single women left without any male guardians.
also a lota divorced women, men seem to be more reluctant to marry them. Some societies due to stigma other societies coz she comes with baggage.

Some websites says it’s totally haraam to take on your husband’s surname..
My mum never changed her surname…only cos coincidently her surname happened to be what my dad’s first name is…..even though she wanted to, dad said its best not to..
So...we've all taken our mum's surname :?
Personally, my surname has always annoyed me…it’s been the butt of many jokes in high school and even in the schools I teach today…
I’ve always thought that if my husbands surname is ever prettier then mine…then I’ll take his name, if not I’ll stick to my own.
I don’t know how strict Islam is about tis matter…and I wonder what it says about converts surnames?
I may ask someone about this.

Is it permissible for a woman to change her family name to her husband’s family name? Is it permissible for her to join between her own family name and her husband’s family name? (If her name is Aisha Qureshi and her husband’s name is Ahmad Rashid, then an example of the former would be for her to change her name to Aisha Rashid and an example of the latter would be for her to change her name to Aisha Qureshi-Rashid)
If, by changing her family name and ascribing herself to another family, she intends to absolve herself of and turn away from her lineal ascription to her own father from whose loins she came, and to make herself a daughter of that other family, then this is a major sin that is extremely forbidden. Its prohibition has been transmitted with rigorously authenticated (sahih) chains in Bukhari and Muslim and other collections of hadith. [The reason for its extreme prohibition] is that it comprises showing ungratefulness for one's blessings, disregard for the rights of inheritance, kinship, reason, and other things, in addition to the severance of kinship ties and parental disobedience that it entails, as Imam Nawawi has explained.
If, however, the matter is not like this, but is merely an ascription of the wife’s name to her husband’s that some people have become habituated to doing without her intending to absolve herself of her lineal ascription to her father and adopting someone else as a father, then what is immediately apparent from the words of Imam Nawawi and others is that it is not forbidden and does not fall under the prohibition.
Imam Nawawi in his commentary on Sahih Muslim (2.50), commenting on the hadith, “There is nothing from a man who calls himself by other than his father except unbelief (kufr),†says, “The meaning of, calls himself by other than his father is ascribes himself to him and takes him as his father.†This implies that the one who does not take him as a father has not called himself by other than his father.
The great scholar Ibn ‘Allan al-Siddiqi says in his commentary on Riyad al-Salihin (8.614) in “The Chapter of Forbidden Matters†while talking about the above hadith,
“This means that he also intends to negate his paternal lineage from himself, for otherwise, if he is commonly known through the lineage of his grandfather or of the one who adopted him, for example, and he then ascribes himself to that because of its common knowledge among people, not intending to negate it from his own lineage, then the warning mentioned below does not apply to him.â€
