*Habib Kazim Ja'far Muhammad al-Saqqaf was born in Tarim, Hadramaut,
Yemen in 1960. He was taught the Qur'an and other Islamic disciplines
by his eminent teachers at the famous school of Qur'anic Literacy and
Memorisation - Abu Murayyim and the prestigious school of classical
learning - the Ribat of Tarim. After graduating he continued his
studies at the hands of some of Tarim's most qualified scholars and
teachers. He thereafter travelled in search of knowledge to Northern
Yemen, registering at the famous Ribat of Bayda where he was blessed
to study with scholars such as Habib Muhammad bin Abd-Allah al-Haddar,
Habib Ibrahim bin Aqil bin Yahya and Habib Zain bin Sumait. He then
returned to Tarim were he continued his studies as well as embarking
upon the continual task of da'wah. He was appointed as principal and
head teacher of the Ribat of Shihr, occupying the post for six years,
thereafter transferring to the Ribat of Mukalla, again as principal
and head teacher, for a further two years. He has taught in countries
such as Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
He currently teaches at Dar al-Mustafa in Tarim as well as sitting
on the Council for Legal Verdicts at the same establishment. He is
also extremely active in all parts of Hadramaut, regularly lecturing
and participating in conferences.

*Sidi Abu 'Aaliyah Surkhil ibn Anwar Sharif has been involved in
da'wah and community work over the last 20 years. He has delivered
lectures, circles and seminars in various universities, mosques
and Islamic centres across the UK and abroad. He has studied under
a number scholars, notably Shaykh 'Abdullâh al-Fârisi and Shaykh
'Abdurrahmân al-Luwayhiq. He is currently furthering his studies
in Hanbali Fiqh and has translated a number of books from Arabic
into English, including Tenets of Faith, The Ideological Attack,
Etiquettes of Differing, The Exquisite Pearl, Fadl 'Ilm al-Salaf
(Virtue of Knowledge of the Predecessors) of Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali,
and Bidâyat al-Sul fî Tafdîl ar-Rasul (Virtues and Status of the
Prophet [pbuh]) of al-'Izz ibn 'Abd as-Salâm. Amongst his regular
local community activities he has been the guest of a number shows
on Islamic radio stations during Ramadan and is also Director of
the Jawziyyah Institute based in London. Currently he teaches and
serves as one of the Jumu'ah Khateeb's at Masjid Al-Tawhid in East

*Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad (T.J. Winter) is one contemporary Islam’s
leading thinkers. Educated at Cambridge University, he then lived in
Cairo for three years, studying Islam under traditional teachers at
Al-Azhar, one of the oldest universities in the world. He went on to
reside for three years in Jeddah, where he administered a commercial
translation office and maintained close contact with Habib Ahmad
Mashhur al-Haddad and other ulama from Hadramaut, Yemen. In 1989,
Shaikh Abdal Hakim returned to England and spent two years at the
University of London learning Turkish and Farsi. Since 1992 he has been
a doctoral student at Oxford University, specializing in the religious
life of the early Ottoman Empire. He is currently Secretary of the Muslim
Academic Trust (London) and Director of the Sunna Project at the Centre of
Middle Eastern Studies at Cambridge University, which issues the first-ever
scholarly Arabic editions of the major Hadith collections. Shaikh Abdal
Hakim is the translator of a number of works, including two volumes from
Imam al-Ghazali's Ihya Ulum al-Din. He gives durus and halaqas from time
to time and taught the works of Imam al-Ghazali at the Winter 1995 Deen
Intensive Program in New Haven, CT. He appears frequently on BBC Radio and
writes occasionally for a number of publications, including The Independent;
and Q-News, Britain's premier Muslim Magazine.
