Hey! This is an English website. Can you please explain the meaning of:

Milad
Mehfil
Tilawat
Chisti

Shukran- OOPS... err, I mean 'thank you'!

Don't just do something! Stand there.

Milad means birth and in this case it is the birth of the Prophet (SAW). the Arabic equivalent is Mawlid.

A mehfil is a gathering, the term is usually used for religious gatherings.

Tilawat is recitation of the Qur'an with tarteel (i think its spelt like that).

Chishti is a sufi order.

Please correct me if i am wrong.

Can we also "correct" you if you're right?

Not that I wanna.

Thanks! So what is 'tarteel'?

There are two types of recitation of the Qur'an (that i know of anyway):

Qirat/tarteel...this is recitation with eloquence, stress and an accent

Hadar...this is a fast and fluent style of recitation (usually recited in jama'ah)
