also, many people take it as an opportunity to move out of home and therefore learn things like budgeting, cookery
erm i still cant
You can have a first class degree but if you dont have the relevant experience employers wont give you a second glance. I am currently looking for a new part time job. Im sick of sales, having to be polite to rude customers day in day out but thats all i know so looks like im stuck with it. Ive tried looking into other areas of work but everytime i ring up the first question is like have you got experience (no i havent), so they dont bother asking anything else.
Anyway i think experience is far more important then any level of degree attained.
The reality of the job market in the Uk is that a degree is the basic requirement to be considered for a professional job. One of the reasons for this is that it proves the candidate has at least the basic language and communication skills required.
From a candidate's perspective a degree does provide some confidence when applying for jobs, although for most professions you will most likely need to gain further job-related qualifications.
It seems like a college degree is expected. I've yet to see anybody gasp, take a few steps back and exclaim "You have a degree??? From college?"
Yet I've heard of many people without college degrees who are told there is no need for them to apply to X job on account of it.
The most it's done for me is provided a stepping stone to Law School.
I finished my degree at the age of 20 (2 months ago). I wish I chose another degree, it did not interest me what so ever :? but the past is gone. SubhanAllah there are loads of courses around like Arabic, Counselling, Teaching that one can do
