Depends what happened. If it's too political to go to the police, stay out of it and if your friends have any sense so will they. Generally the police would rather have cooperation than anarchy. I've reported things to the police and seen them at their best, and I've also, when I was working for the council, reported incidents I was alerted to and had the police call several hours later to ask if they were still needed, which is pathetic. But they do what they can.
Sometimes gang intimidation is so severe that the police steer clear until things reach a head and they can round up the big boys. That's the kind of situation you want to be avoiding!

No offence but all i am hearing is stay away from it when that seems the most difficult thing, its got nothing to do with religion or race but gang warfare and its difficult for me to stand by and do nothing.
Evil only prevails when good men do nothing.

Exactly. And your mate, while he is your mate, belongs to a gang that just might, objectively, not constitute "good men". Seriously, the kids that stay out of it, are out of it. Get your mates out of that culture. Or keep it up until you all end up in hospital, jail or worse.
Since I'm repeating myself I'll leave it there.

From personal experience one should refrain from skipping lessons/lectures as it can become a habit. What might start off as missing one or two might lead to not going to any. You could miss important announcements.
During mu undergrad even if i had not done the work properly for the seminar i would still force myself to go. Yeah there is a chance that the tutor might show you up in front of the whole class (never happened to me) or throw you out of his lesson (happened once) but that way you will be forced to do your work properly in future.

And the next thing you know you dont have a full set of notes.
There are HUGE gaps in your understanding.
and then you wonder why you got a B instead of an A.... but think to yourself that the examiners were racist (even tho all papers are marked anonymously).
