The *ALL NEW* Revival Homepage

Salaam

The other topic has got pretty big, and is going over too many diferent itterations of the homepage to be useful.

In short, The new homepage has been up for a few weeks now. The relief that I actually finished it is over. I can see way too many faults in it.

However, I want to know what faults others see in it, as because I am so close to its creation, my flaws may be diferent from what others see.

Currently what I think are the problems:

1. Its too amateurish. Great ideas with very poor execution. No finesse.
2. If you have a decent monitor, you may aswell puke before you visit, as the result of viewing in a resolution anything above 800*600 is pretty poor.
3. too many lists, which are too long.
4. Lack of focus. Its a bit of a jack of all trades. Probably because of the war between me and 'Ed where it is impossible to agree to his 'design' ideas, as I find them just so 1995.

so what catches the eye? what is bad? what is good? what gains focus?

and colourscheme wise should we go back to some form of green?

(asa forum skin there is one called nosebleed which actually goes pretty well with the site, and is cool...)

Salam

I still don't like it. It feels like a blue movie trailer.

Come on. We've been through this before.

You are just window dressing. You are not making any real changes to the look and feel of the site.

We need artistic talent displayed.

I know you guys have it. Just get it out.

We demand your best.

Omrow

that is a good call for 'something' to be done.

Now can you be a little more helpful with what that 'something' is?

(as a side note, I have been messing around with fonts. Verdana normally looks good on sites. I have seen it used on tons of sites, and it looks good, but when I use it it looks very hackish for some reason. I cannot seem to use that font in the right places...)

(and I do not think we need too many 'big' changes... but I may be wrong.)

still think ur trying to re-invent the wheel here bro.

maybe look at a few wordpress examples, find one u like, and mod it with the type of stuff u want on it.

look Mr admin

the layout and setting is great-DONT change that

even though on my screen u see bear empty space on the sides-if i was u I'd sit in front of a larger screen and see how terrible it looks with white stuff on either sides

the site just lacks oomph

it is now ur job to inetgrate some oomph in to it

shouldnt be too hard Wink

admin wouldnt know ooomph if it slapped him in the face! Biggrin
ooomphh is a bit too 1995 for him.
everyone can shout and scream, and advice and suggest until we're blue in the face..... and admin will then say.... 'so how can it be improved' Lol

i have gave many suggestions...which have been completely ignored.... so nowt else i can say or do...

ok, can I have some critique of the current homepage then? It does not have to be positive or negative.

Just simple things like what do you notice first? which parts look unprofessional? which parts are only noticed after a long periosd of time? what parts are overwhelming with the amount of information? which parts are underwhelming? overall layout I am pretty happy with (well, mostly)m, so am not planning on changing it too much. Just refine.

(and LilSis, I will add a border to the page to give it a bit of closure so it looks slightly better on bigger monitors. I may also try a couple more things...)

How about a background image tiled, its plain white, we are not the Ku Klux Klan.

On ma laptop it looks kinda empty on the sides too. Maybe side borders, again a background image may make this less of an eye[b]b[/b]ore.

Also the "Lastest Articles" is a hugh list, what is it Oprah Winfreys shopping list? mayb if its shortened, n put a "more" link which takes you to the "Headlines" page.

I scrolled right to the bottom, then i found the damned search thingy, when i needed it i couldnt find it, wat a silly place to put that. Its always near the top sumwhere, image google hiding the search box, would be kinda inconvenient wouldnt it?

"TV & Radio Guide" says no events...hmm, how about an update mate.

I have just added events to the tv & radio guide... But is it actually useful? should it be replaced with events? where upcoming events can be publicised?

Does anyone actually look at the tv/radio guide?

oh yeah... I forgot... the [url= is the place where I try out my small experiments.

Its not refined, but its the place where I am messing around with things. I have changed some fonts... and some other things. Its nowhere near refined yet.

But does the border make the page look more presentable on smaller screens?

[edit]

I have made a few more changes to the test page.

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.

Tv Radio AND Events would be good.

The test page, it looks like a dam PDF file now, cuz there is a Middle white section, then like a background of an application look thing goin on either side. Maybe try a background tiled image?

I may have a tiles image for the rest of the page that does not have any content...

considering we are part of a magazine... is looking like a pdf a good thing or a bad thing?

I have made a few more changes to the test page.

Mate, u smacked it.. It looking great. it definatly a lot easier on my eyes.

looks great on 1024x768 and 1280x1024.

Try experiment with very subtle css mouse-over on the background colour of your article links.. might give it the oomph people are crying about.

Center your links below the revival banner.

a tad too much orange.. try a different colour for the background of your article headings, maybe use the green behind ur submit button in the forums.

Massive improvement, well done.

I like the fact that there isn't lots of white on the sides anymore...I think the forum bit needs to look more like that "articles" and "headlines" bit..(the thread titles should be seperated by lines).

It'd be perfect if it was just a tad more "in your face"...I like the layout etc though.

On a 2nd look at the testpage, easier on the eyes etc yeh, but u took out the multimedia n search boxes at the bottom. Also, some of the sections are overlaping on my laptop.

Ill chek on my computer in a bit to c if its the same.

yup there are some layout problems, with a bit of overlapping. The fporums bit image is just a place holder, which will be replaced once I decide what colours to use for that bit.

The bottom bits were removes so that I can add them later when I have a better Idea... I think I will add the search and egroup boxes side-by side under the two 'features' articles...

Khan I will follow up on your tips over the weekend. Thanks for the input to all of you. More would still be welcome, even if its just repeating the same thing by diferent people. (otherwise its not possible to find out what proportion of people like what bit...)

and good to see its all easier on the eyes.

I jus cheked on my computer, which has an older Monitor. N the testpage looks really good, its not as bad on the eyes, problem tho is the bckgrund colour n the colour for forums bit seems to be the same, so its kinda funny looking.

Overlapping issues,
Forums bit needs lines to seperate as sis mentioned
Add the multimedia, wats on tv radio/events, n the serch thingy bck .

Soon as thats dne its pretty much nailed.,

thee forums bit is not completed, so there are issues. the greens will need to change.

I am thinking of combining tv & radi guide with events. This will overcome a small limitation of only being allowed one type of calendar per page by the soiftware I am using...

SO I may make it just like the top bit, one feature event/tv/radio, with a list of upcoming events to its left.

Good idea or bad?

Sounds good, but it needs to stay at the bottom wher it currently is.

Somehow it seems the site has gone down... database error.

Its one reason I was vary about databases. I will just have to have a quick look at what is happeniong, and Inshallah it will be fixed asap.

It looks like a problem at the webhost atm...

[EDIT]

And now the problem has automagically gone away!

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.

It seems |I went for the wrong type of calendar on the sit.

I am now looking into changing it for a new one.

New ones extra features:

1. Put in location for event, and it'll show a map via google maps!
2. erm... it may meet my needs better than the older calendar.

The downside? Its in beta. There could be hiccups.

But then again, the current calendar software is just not scaling at all to fit my needs, so its not really a major downside.

I will have to test it to see if it works.

TV guide or no tv guide?

In the new calendar, you have to enter a location. for a TV event there is no location! (well... you can add location as 'TV' but this will result in a crash... but the tv event will actually be added!)

SO is the TV guide needed at all?

Id say TV guide is a good idea, lets ppl know if nefin interesting is on, im not one to watch TV or read tv listings, so I'd never see adverts or kno if a good program/documentary was showing, Im sure its same for a lopt of people who visit the site.

Our similar page to that 'books' one would be:

But I do not have enbough covers to do the same thing...

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.

Instead of doing all the changes at once (mainly the calendar stuff...)

I decided to do a smaller update, just adding the border and then grey bit...

However I have ran into two issues that I am struggling with atm:

1. In internet explorer, the forums links are not visible.
2. In firefox the bottom bit of the page is not enclosed within the page, but in the grey bit.

I will probably need to sleep on this.

Grrr!

I had a small epiphany. (well not really... but I wanted to leave this bit for later...)

[url=

I just put an event in from the events board (without most of the details...) to see how it looks. The actual amount of info makes it look poor, but at the same time I think it will work...

input?

[EDIT]

I have changed the grey for a tiled background... shoulg be barely noticeable, but look better than the grey. again input needed asap.

it looks like a granny's website

its the ugliest thing i have ever seen

no joke

get rid of the grey

what u did last time to the background was much better

I replaced the grey witht the tile coz 'Ed did not like the gray... I will probably change it back.

Anything else I really need to do before making this change final for now?

wheres the multimedia stuff...defo needs to be on home page...stick that under tv/radio guide

dont like the red border....
the tile colour now is much better than grey.... grey was dull-try white or i would say stick whole page to the left...and space on right will be ok...thats how bbc do it...looks good:

plus we definitely need another row of art work of topics like we have above the announcements.... (unique feature and most attractive feature of site i think) that will defo stand out, and keep ppl on site for much longer...with more to browse...as this is youth site,
at mo....too much text not enough images to make it attractive and keep ppl intersted etc....
