So Many Muslims, So Little Islam

Salaam

Someone mentioned this point to me once….using the catchy slogan in the title above. It really made me think.

Does anyone believe that sometimes our focus becomes lost?

I mean, sometimes we get so bogged down dunia stuff…work/Uni/school/family etc etc that we sometimes forget stop to think about Allah (swt)…..sometimes the purpose of being sent to this world gets pushed at the back of our mind.

I feel that the people who are actually busy working for Islam, striving to improve themselves and those around them using hiqmah (wisdom) are few and far between.

Most of the time, many people just don’t want to know….

We live in such a fast society in which we’re always rushing to do one thing after another…and sometimes the focus becomes lost….many of us don’t have time for Allah (swt), we struggle to fit Him in our timetables…

On the other hand, you get some who do, do the ritual side of Islam and may even actively work for Islam yet lack basic humanity and compassion for their fellow human beings…

A top scholar once mentioned a hadith in a lecture…he said that one of the teachers of Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jillani (ra) found the following hadith sufficient for his entire life.

The Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him) is reported to have said “Work for your dunia (worldly gains and earnings) in proportion to your stay in this world, and work for hereafter in proportion to your eternal stay in it. And work for Allah (swt) in proportion to your need for Him…”

And no, I’m not claiming that we should renounce the world and just focus on Allah (swt)…after all the best type of person (true Sufi) is the one who eats, sleeps, works, trades with people, sits in their company etc, yet never forgets Allah (swt) for a single moment.

Anyways, I just wanted to discuss time management in Islam…how much time (if any) do we put aside for Allah (swt)?….and how important it is to do this?

I’m sure most of us live very busy lives…how do you fit Islam into your day to day life?

And, is it true that we focus on more Fiqh issues (be it Salaah/pardah/length of beard etc) and never stop and think about Allah (swt)?…I mean, how many of can claim that we can read Salaah without our mind wandering here, there and everywhere?

Busy boy

most people are v v busy-but they make time for stuff that they think is portant...i know many people like that

its good to be islamically active

when i grow up (mentally!) I'm gonna be very active

Thats true, i agree absolutely that its important to create the time to do such things... right now we're partitioning to get a prayer room created at work, so we can read prayer there.

Im prob gonna cut into sleep time to make up for the time to offer more prayers.... no that ive decided thats the easy part over... now i just gotta will myself to do it....

All the time.

You ought to have your eyes checked out; and get a better lense.

Assalamu Alaikum,

Even if our life is busy that won't be sufficient excuse when we meet our Creator.

I think the early morning is the best time to get extra acts of ibadah in, before the working day begins.

So before and after fajr there's time for reading the Quran, nafl salat. Doing dhikr. In the still of the morning there's time to contemplate on our deeds. There;s time to reflect on our shortcomings, and the debt owing to our creator.

I was once told to keep a spiritual diary, detailing my worldy and religious objectives for the day. Then at the end of the day reflect on these, detailing whether i did them well, what i learned. The negatives, how i could avoid them etc. I think it's a humbling experience. A way of realising our faults, being aware of the bounties Allah has given us and strenghthening our bond with our Creator.

We start our morning with a good hearty breakfast, so we should follow it with some wholesome worship to keep us focused and get us through the day. That's how we can keep focus muslimsis..least that's one way.

Salaam

I agree with you yash..

However, it is also well know that many people do pray their five daily prayers, however hardly remember Allah (swt)….prayer for many is just a ritual. I myself find it impossible to read one single Salaah without my mind wandering…this is what I meant regarding the focus being lost.

Fiqh is present but Taqwa is lacking. Islam may be there but Ihsan isn’t.

Your point about putting time aside for contemplation is very valid….if we all took time out of our busy lives to stop and think….maybe we’d be more focused.

yes i think that happens to all of us. Our faith takes on a yo yo effect. Some days it's at a peak other days it's at a low. It's quite normal, but it would be nice to maintain a constant level.

The following article is long, you might want to skim through it, but i remember reading it a few years ago, i still refer to it when i'm not doin so good:

the thing with working for islam is that-u need company

if u dont have a mother/father/partner or mate who is pushing u do work for islam

people just become lazy-

and when it comes to islamic work MOST people are lazy

i was struggling to give this girl 5 revival mags in the mosque once-just to give to her mates

lazy girl was moaning about her exams

how long does it take to give out 5 mags amongst ur mates?

i dont bribe people

but nothing irritates me more then people who long it when u ask them to do sumin for islam

revival mag distribution is one example

i have a LOT of respect for them people who are more then happy to do the donkey work

It is true, that there loads of muslims but so little islam. Is it because that there isn't a environment where islam can really flourish. Dunya does take priority in most people life, I sometime think it best to my make move to a more islamic minded country, but does one exist? Take pakistan for example, so many mosque and regular azaans, but someone I know just came back and he said when he went to the mosque sometime the imaam used to not even be there and no one used to come too read.

But at the same time, everyone talks a good game as well where islam is concerned, you wouldn't think there was a problem with the muslims in general. I personally can't help but see the current situation of muslims as hopless and i cannot see a solution either

I know that the environment does play a part however, one should have a strong relationship with Allah (swt) if they're in China or Makkah.

It all depends on the individual...I used to put some time aside at night in just to sit on the prayer mat in the dark and think, do dhikr etc But most days I fall asleep almost immediately, I'm too tired to even put my prayer mat away after Isha

In this society its hard not to get caught up in the rat race. And whilst many of us do practise Islam...many don't stop to think or to double check their intentions.

I agree, but surely if we know a problem exist shouldn't we try to chnage the situation. I know one mate who took this job and basically due to this job he end up missing one of his namaaz, so he simply quit because he didn't want to risk missing another one of his namaaz. Most people were surprise he did it, but too me he someone who knew the importance of his islam and how important it is to protect it. But this quality is rare in a person. How many of us look for a job in dunya that will benefit us in the akhira, the first thing people will normally ask is how much we are getting paid for a job. Because we indulge ourselves too much into this lifestsyle our islam is going to suffer.

Have to admit like many of u I to am realyyyyyy busy doing other things that sometimes I do abandon the most important thing..my deen!

I cam across these intelligent words thought i'd share them with you all...

1. Our Knowledge: Wasted by not taking action with it.
2. Our Actions: Wasted by committing them without sincerity.

3. Our Wealth: Wasted by using on things that will not bring us ajr (reward from Allah). We waste our money, our status, our authority, on things which have no benefit in this life or in akhirah (hereafter).

4. Our Hearts: Wasted because they are empty from the love of Allah, and the feeling of longing to go to Him, and a feeling of peace and contentment. In it's place, our hearts are filled with something or someone
else.

5. Our Bodies: Wasted because we don't use them in ibadah (worship) and service of Allah.

6. Our Love: Our emotional love is misdirected, not towards Allah, but towards something/someone else.

7. Our Time: Wasted, not used properly, to compensate for that which has passed, by doing what is righteous to make up for past deeds.

8. Our Intellect: Wasted on things that are not beneficial, that are detrimental to society and the individual, not in contemplation or reflection.

9. Our Service: Wasted in service of someone who will not bring us closer to Allah, or benefit in dunyaa.

10. Our Dhikr (Remembrence of Allah): Wasted, because it does not effect us or our hearts.

I received nothing I wanted
I received everything I needed.
My Prayer has been answered.

Must be a top guy.

My mates dad never accepts a job unless they allow him time off to read his Dhuhr and Asr.

Ever since I started work I've ended up missing two and sometimes three prayers in the day, esp now that that the days are shorter.

But I rate people who stick to their guns in deen matters.

truth is-its very very hard to fit islam in ur timetable

but i do try to make time for this forum-and I do learn stuff (sometimes!)

Q.Why is it so hard to tell the truth but
yet so easy to tell a lie?

Q.Why are we so sleepy in mosque but
right when the prayer is over, we suddenly wake up?

Q.Why is it so hard to talk about Allah but
yet so easy to talk about nasty stuff?

Q.Why is it so boring to look at a Islamic Article but
yet so easy to look at a nasty one?

Q.Why is it so easy to delete a Godly e-mail but
yet we forward all of the nasty ones?

Q.Why are the mosque's getting smaller, but
yet the dance clubs are getting larger?

Be honest and you may find that you too can relate to one the above comments..

Totally off topic:

This is a cool song - reminds me of a byzantine chant Kyrie Eleyson, the ISAC used it on campus during one of the interfaith dialogues.

lol they try so... so very hard.

Oh well - it's an interesting song, enjoy.

And before anybody says music isn't allowed in Islam, technically it's chanting and the whole song is about the point of Ramadan - so I think you get a bi on this.

12:30... I should go to bed.

Or should I?

AHHH I'M TALKIN TO MYSELF AGAIN
