By the time you watch this, the guy will probably have been executed for drug smuggling in china.

That isn't good evidence at least without context. Not assuming he has done any wrong, just saying.

The sentence was horrific and the court followed very poor procedures and they did just kill him. China ignored Gordon Brown. He has nothing on anyone.

I know (and that video is emotional blackmail).

I am in two minds about it all - on the one hand, countries have laws and people from the UK should not be under the illusion that if they go abroad and flout those laws, they will be able to get away scott free. Drug peddling ruins lives.

On the other hand... maybe his mental state really was enough of an issue?

If it wasn't an issue and he really did take the risk to make some money by being a drugs mule, I cannot see why they should disregard their laws simply because he was British.

It is still a sad thing.

The Chinese didn't give him a psychiatric review or allow access to a British psychiatrist, and his supporters have made much of it. But bipolar disorder is not about being soft in the head. I'm open to correction, but don't associate it with being manipulable AT ALL, it manifests in depressive mood swings and high irascibility. The song sounds like a drug-addled mickey-take, not something autistic. So I didn't like the evidence or the loaded commentary. Then again a death sentence.

when I listened to it, it was on another tab, so I never saw the commentary.

People with bipolar disorder go through phases of depression ( when some will even kill themselves in their despair ) and at other times get into mania, when they might believe they can fly or that they will save the world the next day or might give away all their possessions in exchange for a map of a hidden treasure from a person they met an hour ago. At other times they will appear as normal, charming people. Most folks in the world are ignorant of what manic depression is ( or any other mental illness, for that matter ).

wait, is that seriously real?

And NOT made up by someone taking the mickey?

its real. Quite catchy I think. Would laugh loads if the circumstances were not so tragic. (can I still laugh?)

Okay, so can you put it basically for me please?

What's going on?

Where? in the song or the current circumstances where he got put down last night?

Well, current world - he wa scaught drug smuggling and executed in China.

The song - reportedly his attempt to promote world peace. No idea if it has any other meaning, but it is strange and the chorus has a mis pronunciation ("lailaha illallallah")

What does it mean when it's like that?

And why is everyone so angry about it? i mean freedom of speech and everything.

And why did he mispronounce it?

it was probably accidental.

and people are angry because they don't want china to exercise its right to follow its law through (some are arguing there was a miscarriage of justice too) and fighting the death penalty is... easier than other things because most people instinctively are against it - and even those pro it urge extreme caution in its usage because, well, if there is a mistake, it cannot be undone.

What?

That makes no sense to me.

What law?

Chinese law.

He got caught drug smuggling in china. Chinese law is that drug smugglers are executed.

He got convicted, but some people afterwards argued that he was mentally deficient or set up, arguments the court did not accept.

and china has an abysmal human rights record, but since this guy is British, I guess people see him as a softer target to argue against Chinese law and government etc than some random high number of other people who have suffered there.

The chinese failed to follow basic human rights guidelines - Shaikh was not even informed of the execution yet had to hear of it from family members during a short visit from his cousins from the UK.

There is no doubt that the chinese judicial system is in need of serious reform if this is how defendants are treated in China and results of unfair and excessive sanctions... i hope this issue is brought to greater light in the future so that china will not make similar decisions in such cases.

Also looking into the history of cases in china it seems that chinese citizens on foriegn soil were given sanctions when china strongly insisted they be trialed on chinese soil .... could this just be china being arrogant ...if it is they were being damn right too excessive with the sentence of execution and not even informing the defendant of the sanction

if tried on UK soil...obviously the defendant would not have been executed ...but rather the issue of mental illness would have been taken more seriously and the case would have been reconsidered after reading through bbc news articles it gives the impression that the defendant was not even given a proper psychi examination ....rather the impression was they looked at his 'mental illness' history...what utter rubbish.

you're training to be a lawyer, so that is what you are supposed to think. Every system is in need of reform until a lawyer rules the world... I am not a fan of such a world vision.

a system only needs reform if it doesnt function properly ... i dont think anyone totally agreed with what happened in this incident in China if reform is what it takes to prevent future incidents similar to this one then so be it reform should defnintly be considered.

It executed someone who was convicted of drug smuggling based on the evidence and there was no medical record of mental illness from previous life.

There are plenty of people - even in the uk - who think the right outcome was reached.

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.

if there is the slightest doubt that the defendant could be suffering from a mental illness then obviously a full medical test should be conducted .... its not a game that you take a risk its actually a persons life at risk...

i feel that many barristers and even solicitors would agree with this opinion that if any indication of mental illness is given then that basically opens the case up again..

hence many famous cases now have set a precedent in relation to pshychiatric illness and this has only been due to the fact that where it was needed pshchiatric tests were carried out.

im not disagreeing with you that a drugs related crime should be taken light heartedly but at the end of the day even if the sanction is execution then atleast the judicial system should have the courtesy to carry out a proper investigation and look at all the facts of the case - also when full case facts are released then its fair to make a proper comment on whether justice was truly served...i'l try and look for the law report online and have a quick read,

Do you think they didn't look at all the facts? and its not the uk, so they may not have online reporting of all the evidence etc.
