Discuss what exactly?
There's a few issues here:
The documentary, self-harm, comparing self-harm rates.
Gentleness and kindness were never a part of anything except that it made it beautiful, and harshness was never a part of anything except that it made it ugly.
Through cheating, stealing, and lying, one may get required results but finally one becomes
Whatever people want to. The self harm rates were interesting to me as double or triple seems like a big jump.
I did not watch the whole documentary, but there were interesting bits in it, such as that self harm clinic where they did not prevent people from self harming, instead asking them to fill in a form everytime they did. bureaucracy used in order to better humanity. Who'd have thought that?

Seriously? So these people don't get help?
They do, but it was a new style treatment centre as the "full stop" method did not work for everyone.

OK this is what I was afraid of happening.
People who don't understand self-harm talking about self-harm.
A few fun facts:
Self-harm is a coping mechanism for dealing with feelings of depression and/or stress. Some self-harmers suffer from a PHYSIOLOGICAL condition whereby they cannot calm down when affected by stress. Self-harm works to calm them down.
Self-harm STOPS people from commiting suicide and if prevented from self-harming such people are more likely to commit suicide.
Self-harmers who have been prevented from self-harming (and kept on strict watches) become more desperate and cunning and not only will they still self-harm, but they will do so in a more desperate life-threatening way.
I think the best way to support self-harmers is to give them the knowledge to do it more safely and to give them therapy to deal with the underlying problems. According to 42nd street, this works.

You're forgetting its also sometime seen as a form of escapism.
I would assume its to hide pain. Physical pain to hide emotional pain.
When physical pain heals, you would probably feel some relief.
In that you are not hurting others as much (though those that care will still be hurt).

Does smoking count as a form of self-harm?
If not, why not?
Don't just do something! Stand there.
I think it should be counted as self harm cuz thats exactly what ur doing!

OK, what about eating a lot of chocolate?
Don't just do something! Stand there.
I would not categorise either as self harming. In footballing terms, the difference would be the same as between handball and ball to hand.
After the initial stage of peer pressure, people smoke because they enjoy it. The fact that cigarettes can do long term harm is a separate issue and not the reason people smoke.

over eating chocolate? yes

Couldn't we find them an alternative to relive stress like, writing, playing sport and so forth? Most people tend to not actually enjoy it as the best thing in the world.

Apologies Dawud, I actually don't personally know anything about self harm. I only know people who have used self harm. And they said talking to friends and stuff helped. SO that's why I was surprised about the filling in forms thing.
