Re: When in Saudi
Re: When in Saudi
The word for Pure is also 'Zina' in Arabic (with different emphasis, more like 'Ziina')
Makes you realise you have to be careful with your tajweed or you may end up causing offence!
I thought Pure was Tahir.
I thought Pure was Tahir.
Slighlty off the point. But
Slighlty off the point. But don't you think if a word/name begins with Zi there's a sense of evil attatched to it?
You know, Zionism, Zina, General Zia (he's the guy they blew up in his plane).
Re: I thought Pure was Tahir.
Many words, many meanings.
I thought Zeena(t) was beauty or something?
"Zina" is pronounced more like "Zinaa"

Jameel or Jameela means beauty I think.
Re: I thought Pure was Tahir.
You missed out the word "also". There can be many words and phrases that mean the same/similar things.
Re: I thought Pure was Tahir.
Jamal means camel, jamaal means beauty
I don't know how to say 'beautiful camel' in Arabic (yet, insha'Allah)!
Re: I thought Pure was Tahir.
LOL, I just remembered my friend telling me they went to the market to buy half a pound of chicken, but ordered half a pound of heaven instead! (dunno what the arabic words used were)
Re: I thought Pure was Tahir.
Mid year class assessment.
Senior Management: So, are there any groups of children who are over achieving in your class?
Me: Yeah, the Pakistani children.
Senior Management: And what group of children are under achieving in your class?
Me: The white working class.
Senior Management: And is that because you, yourself are a Pakistani?
Me: ??!!
Senior Management: Well surely there is a reason...
Me: IMO the reason is because, Aalia's mum tells me that she wants Aalia to be a Docter and asks for extra H/W whilst Charlies mum comes to pick up Charlie as high as a kite, dragging along five kids, all of whom have different dads and is regularly F'ing and B'linding in front of the kids.
Senior Management: OK. Point taken.
I was very, VERY annoyed.
Re: I thought Pure was Tahir.
Me: So class, today the letter sounds we're looking at is 'ss' - like boss, kiss, moss etc...does anyone know any other words which contain'ss'
Jordan: Tosser!
Re: I thought Pure was Tahir.
That kid must have experienced some top notch parenting...
RE: Overachieving
...that she wants Aalia to be a Docter and asks for extra H/W ...
Do you think this could have a negative impact in later life?
ftr, my opinion on homework is that it should be made illegal.
RE: Overachieving
True. Some parents are OTT like that. Especially the Paki's.
At primary level H/W shouldnt even be stressed so much.
I've had parents ask me to help their kids become a docter...and I'm like "But he's five years old!"

primary school most definately. Maybe one or two pieces in year 6 to prepare you for secondary school, but that's it.
Re: I thought Pure was Tahir.
Jamal means camel, jamaal means beauty
I don't know how to say 'beautiful camel' in Arabic (yet, insha'Allah)!
(im guessing that its) jamalun jameel
Al Kalimah Jadeedah: Jamal, Jameel (new words: Camel, Beautiful)
I have Arab friends, and I
I have Arab friends, and I said to them "What if someone comes up to you and says 'Anti fatatoun jameela! (You are a beautiful girl)' What would you do?"
They all said they would smack this smart alec.

What does that supposed to mean?
Re: I have Arab friends, and I
There's another Arabic diss I know, "Anta luti!"
Anta means you are (male) and you can probably work out what luti means. Think of Lut (pbuh).
Re: I have Arab friends, and I
"Luti" itself is not an insult and IMO it should not be used as one. Prophet Lut (as) was a prophet. Following him would be the right thing to do for the people of his time. Unfortunately, a lot of people didn't. So, it is the non luti's you have to worry about...

I know it shouldn't be used to describe them, but in Arabic that word is used, whether we like it or not. Literally it doesn't make sense.
Re: I have Arab friends, and I
Silly sods.
