My conversation with the "Brother" at the Dawa stand in town…

I was walking past the Dawa stand, munching on my sandwich, minding my own business after Jumma on my way back to the office when the Brother called me over.

“Asalamalykum Brother” he said.

I replied with the standard “walaykumasalam”

“I see you’re on your way back to work for the capitalist kuffar so I’ll not take too much of your time” he began.

‘Capitalist kuffar’ I thought to myself, ‘that’s not one I’d heard before, I’ll have to remember that’ and secretly smirked to myself at what may follow on from this comment.

“Sheik Saab is doing a talk this Sunday at the Dawa place and we’re trying to get as many brothers to come to it as possible. Here’s 5 leaflets for you, give them to some other brothers at your work and bring them along with you too”

Why I'm feeling in a good mood today :-)

I was just looking through the internet and came across MYH (Muslim Youth Helpline)It's like a confidential non judgmental helpline for Muslim Youth who are experiencing the "down" of the ups and downs of life.

They have their bank details on the site and need regular donations. Something as little as £15 will help support one helpline volunteer for a whole month.

In my opinion, this is a really good organisation that should get the help and support of everyone which is why I'm setting up a standnig order this afternoon.BTW - £15 is not the minimum donation they take. According to the website it could even be a £1 one off donation (15 people do this and that's one volunteer supported for a whole month)

Annual 2.5% Ramadan charity donation

I was once told that we should all pay 2.5% of all our worldly posessions as like a charity tax every year.

My cashflow is usually a bit all over the place and I don't think I ever have 2.5% of what I own as liquid capital in my account at any point in the year.

I do however make regular donations (monthly ones to like Water Aid and NSPCC and one offs like to the chap whos doing the 10k to raise money for the Revival) throughout the year that amount to more than 2.5% of everything I own.

Does this count? Do I get let off the hook for not having made that one off donation last Ramadan?

Helping

What I've spent my morning thinking:

How can you help someone who doesn't want to be helped?

Sitting on the sideline is slowly but surely killing you both.

But any time you try to help - you get shot down, shut out. (because he's older than you so clearly "knows better")

It's not even like he's your child, so slapping him over the head and forcing him to do the right thing is out of the question too.

You're 100% certain he will benifit from the proposed changes and it will improve his life in countless ways. (not just this life)

Yet all can do is watch "what could have been" get flushed down the pan.

Is "doing the right thing" always the right thing to do?

Ms Curtis, my GCSE English Teacher, told me I should always check my work before submitting it. And since this is the first bit of work I’m doing since then, I thought I’ll act on her advice. When I did, by reading the title, I thought “well Duh..!! – clearly it is. But then I referred to scrap notes to remind myself why I started writing this article and remembered – doing the right thing is actually not always the right thing to do.

For example, if you’re driving along and see someone at the zebra crossing, you should stop as it’s the right thing to do? But what if you have a child in your car who you need to get to the hospital? Then the right thing to IS to stop, but also not to stop? Which one is righter? (if that’s even a word – but you know what I mean)

The Confession Box

I was just sat here with nothing to do reading through a few old posts (as one does on a rainy dull Sunday Morning) and thought it might not be a bad idea to have an annonymous Confession Box style section on here.

I know a lot of people share stories etc about what's going on with them and things they want advice on etc, but what about those topics thta people want advice on, but don't for what ever reason want others to know it's from them?

Not that I have anything such like topic to get off my chest, but I just thought it might be a good idea?

Who else has though we should have something like this?
