The only way we can truly benefit from the Qur'an is to build a strong connection and relationship with it. So, how can we do this? My friend shared the following with me and it's worth reading.
- Every time we go to recite the Qur'an or touch the Qur'an, we should renew our intention, that we are about to take the step to speak to Allah ﷻ. Know the value of this Book of Allah. We have so many copies of the Qur'an around the world, in abundance, that we lose value for the Qur'an. Know that if this Qur'an was revealed on a mountain, it would crumble, perish, be destroyed. This is the true value of His Book.
- When we intend to read the Qur’an, we should do wudhu properly. Let us make it a spiritual journey. When we wash our limbs, we should wash them such that we are covering them with Noor (light). Also remember, when we do wudhu; we should not just wash our limbs, but also our thoughts.
- Make a habit of reciting Qur'an regularly. Even if it is just 5 minutes every day. But take note, that the sahaabah would spend a minimum of 5 hours a day reciting Qur’an. When Ramadhan started Sufyan Athawri used to leave all acts of worship and turn to Quran’. ‘Sa’aid Ibn Jubeyr used to finish the whole recitation of Quran in two nights’. ‘Malik ibn Anas used to run from all circles of knowledge when Ramadhan started and turned instead to the recitation of Quran’.
- Do not just recite the Qur'an, but also understand the meaning and listen to the Qur'an. By listening to the Qur'an it can have a profound impact on the mind, body and soul. A sheikh once said, ‘The taraaweeh is not an action of reading the Qur'an for those following, but listening.'
- Whilst reciting the Qur'an, make du'a. When you come across a verse about Jahannam, ask Allah to save you from it. And like so.
- Adab for the Qur'an. Hold it in the right hand. When handling it, hold it against the chest by the heart. Sit properly when reciting. Cover up properly when reciting Qur'an. And like so.
– Try to perfect your tajweed during this month if you have not already started to. It really does improve the quality of your ibaadah and khushoo.
