I wanna tick 'very concerned' , 'want to know more' AND 'nothing to do with us'

your poll is a load of rubbish!

Don't just do something! Stand there.

Nice one Ya'qub. It's mostly about man-made global warming so you could say you want to know more, or that it's nothing to do with us. The forum doesn't allow a great many options for a poll so I couldn't do combinations. Anyway thanks for commenting. I take it that in answer to the other questions, you're not into recycling and energy-saving.

Bertrand Russell (1872 - 1970)

by saying 'nothing to do with us', i was meaning more specifically 'me'!!

i actually try to recycle, save energy, i try to get locally-produced food, i dont have a nasty smelly car etc.

i especially dont run a disgusting factory so in that way, its not to do with me.
i AM concerned about global warming, but since it seems many people are not, i think it will inevitably happen.

if the climate DOES change, its all by the will of Allah (swt) so we shouldnt be upset,

Don't just do something! Stand there.

I'm very concerned, the science is pretty undeniable that we are causing global warming, that it is a serious problem and that we had better do something about it soon.

BBC"]Singer Sheryl Crow has said a ban on using too much toilet paper should be introduced to help the environment.

Crow has suggested using "only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where two to three could be required".

...

"I have spent the better part of this tour trying to come up with easy ways for us all to become a part of the solution to global warming," Crow wrote.

"Although my ideas are in the earliest stages of development, they are, in my mind, worth investigating.

"I propose a limitation be put on how many squares of toilet paper can be used in any one sitting."

More work for the police but imagine the difference it would make.

Island found in Arctic Circle

A new island has been discovered in the Arctic after rising temperatures melted the giant ice sheet which covered it.

The rocky mass - dubbed Warming Island - lies 400 miles north of the Arctic Circle in eastern Greenland, reports The Sun.

It was found by US explorer Dennis Schmitt 60 and is seen as further proof of global warming.

Danish mapping expert Hans Jepsen said: "It was clearly detached from the mainland when the connecting glacier-bridge retreated southward."

Explorer Schmitt said: "There is a dark side to this. We were all aware of the dire consequences."

China gas emissions 'may pass US'

China could overtake the US this year as the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases, a leading international energy group has said.

The International Energy Agency had predicted China's carbon dioxide emissions would pass the US by 2010.

But IEA chief economist Fatih Birol said the rate of China's economic growth this year defied expectations.

His comments come days after a Chinese government report warned of the impact of climate change on the country.

The report, compiled by several government bodies, said that higher temperatures would lead to worsening droughts, spreading deserts and reduced water supplies.

But it stopped short of recommending cuts in greenhouse gas output and risking the country's economic growth.

There is no Global warming. A load of rubbish.
Its a hoax made up my some bad scientists so that they continue to get millions of pounds of funding.

Ayatollah rightly named America as "Great Satan".

Apart from the thing that scientists are being told by non-scientists to cover global warming up.

It is happening. The question is why? is it man made or is it a natural cycle of earth?

Sooo you'd rather bury your head in the sand and pretend the world aint coming to an end?... yeah you do that. While the rest of us will try and save what we have left.

The dramatic increase in weather intensity phenomenon is undeniable. It doesnt matter if you believe in Global Warming or not you only have to look at the increase in extreme weather events to see things aint right.

Like Admin said the question is whys it happening now?? Is it man's own doing or a part of the earth natural cycle? And what can we do to save ourselves.

The truth is that global warming is happening and that it is already too late to avoid some of the effects. Even under the most optimistic circumstances, atmospheric scientists expect global climate change to result in increased flooding and droughts, more severe storms, and a loss of plant and animal species. These events will occur, even if climate change is gradual.

Back in BLACK

ok im concerned but the latest proposals by government is really enraging. It has already been imposed by a few councils around the uk. Rubbish collections will be on a fortnightly basis, apparently in a bid to force ppl to recycle. Apparently weekly collections have not encouraged ppl to recycle, despite the new paper and garden bins.

But is this a sound way forward? How is it good to leave rubbish rotting on roadsides for 2 weeks? 1 week is bad enough. Can you imagine the smell after 2 weeks? The amount of vermin the bins will attract. I heard a spokewoman for this venture defend it saying as long as the bins are closed there's no problem with vermin. Well mayb she would like to come and disinfect my wheelie bin every fortnight, since my husband is paying taxes for a reason is he not?

I will gladly recycle i agree with it, but i don;t take kindly to the government misusing my money. I see rubbish lying around my street all the time, yet a few yards down the rd my mothers end is immaculate. Regular rd sweepers. Where are my rd sweepers? I studied in leicester like over five yrs ago they were into recycling way before the rest of the uk awoke from their big sleep. They even wash ur wheelie bins over there, least they did on the st i lived. It seems like i and most other brits aren;t getting what we're paying for. They won't clean our bins, they won't sweep our rds regularly, they've increased pay for refuse collectors and now they wana restrict disposable of rubbish to every two weeks.

My bin is usually full within a week all them nappies. Can you imagine 2 weeks worth of rubbish? I would have to send my hubby down to the rubbish depot to get rid of the waste it would stink i can't stand smelly bins.

Finally i think the gov need to impose restrictions on supermarket packaging. Most of the food we consume in my house is home cooked, not ready made. Yet despite this when we pack away shopping the bin is full within a few mins just from excessive packaging. Since most of it is plastic i can't put it in the garden bin nor the paper box so it ends up in the main rubbish bin. Either introduce plastic recycling or to heck with the recycling. Most of the bulky waste is plastic not paper.

why not ban plastic shopping bags. All this nonsense about point earned for every plastic shopper recycled! Make ppl use reusable hesian type bags!

:x :x

You can always use reusable nappies, bins wont be full but you'll have alot of washing to do Wink

It was on the news a few months ago about excessive packaging, haven't they done anything?

Don't they recycle plastic, because they do recycle plastic bottles.

Maybe all supermarkets should follow Lidl and should charge customers to buy plastic carrier bags, this way people people will be forced to re-use their bags. Go Lidl!

The council is mean with bins and with council tax sky high collecting only once a fortnight is a disgrace. Under this government public-sector spending is a shambles.

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.
Bertrand Russell (1872 - 1970)

re usable nappies are you kidding me i thght about it, then thght no, and i'm glad. Coz i'm way too busy i barely get time for myself. Today after all my chores i thght i;ll sit just ten mins before son wakes up soon as i sit down he starts crying. So much for sitting? So no i've not got time to wash loads of dirty nappies, unless i'm willing to do them after midnight.

Anyways i looked into the costs and it's ridiculous. I think the re emergence of reusable nappies are just a rich person's accessory. i mean most wealthy folks altho not all, won't even have to worry about washing them, the housemaid or nanny will do it for them. You have to invest in not just the nappy but the liner, and extra liners and then add up how many ur gona need for the first few months. Then you need these waterproof pants in case of leaks.kushies are the most popular brand and they don;t come cheap do a search if u like ull see what im on about. The headache doesn't seem worth it. You may save a few quid over disposables if ur lucky, but u may lose ur sanity in the grand scheme of things so i'll pass.

Well muslimbro they don't give us a plastic recycle bin why not if a vast majority of waste is plastic it makes sense? Instead in my area we get a measly little paper box. It's the size of boxes you get deliveries in for retail outlets not very big at all...misers it seems like they recycled their brains before using them.

i agree with mr honey for once Biggrin

April weather set to break record

he UK Met Office has released figures showing that this month is likely to be the warmest April since records began.

The provisional mean temperature for the UK is 10.0C (50.0F), beating the previous historical high of 9.2C (48.6), recorded in 1943.

Forecasters say this month is on course to set new records in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The average temperature for the UK over the past 12 months is also shaping up to record a new high of 10.4C (50.7F)

Meteorologists also expect this month to be the warmest April in central England for more than 300 years.

The provisional mean figure in the region for April 2007 is 11.1C (52.0F) - that is 3.2C (5.8F) above the long-term average.

The data has been compiled from observations that go into the Central England Temperature record, which covers a triangular area stretching from the west of London across to Bristol and south of Lancashire.

This series, which dates back to 1659, is the world's longest running temperature series.

The current spell of warm weather, set to continue across the weekend, has prompted the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to issue its first "summer smog" warning for 2007.

It forecasts moderate ground-level ozone levels from Saturday across south-east England and the Midlands. On Sunday, high ozone levels are likely to extend to the rest of England and Wales, officials warn.

They have urged people that are sensitive to ozone to take precautions, such as avoiding exercising outdoors in the afternoon.

Wildlife concerns

Ecologists say the unseasonable weather could leave wildlife vulnerable if the dry spell continues into the summer.

Tim Sparks, from the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, said the below-average rainfall in some areas was causing concern among scientists.

"It has not been the month of showers," he told BBC News. "If it is this dry in April, it does not bode well for the summer.

"Shallow root species will be especially vulnerable if we do have a dry summer."

Dr Sparks was one of the lead authors of a Europe-wide study, published last August, which provided "conclusive proof" that the seasons were changing.

The researchers found that spring was beginning on average six to eight days earlier than it was 30 years ago.

He said that the latest figures from the Met Office came as no real surprise, and were consistent with climate models that projected a rise in temperatures.

"Certainly, this year is going to see a very early spring; there is no doubt about that. We have seen lots of things leafing or flowering a lot earlier that we would expect to see them appear.

"This spring has demonstrated that different species change at different rates to temperature," he added.

"The most obvious sign of this at the moment is that oak trees have come out into leaf very well, but many ash trees are still quite bare.

This could present problems for local food chains, he observed.

"You may have a situation where an insect relies on a particular plant, and birds or other animals rely on that insect further up the food chain.

"If there is a breakdown in the synchrony between them then it could be disastrous," Dr Sparks warned. "We may have a butterfly species, for example, whose caterpillars feed on only a very narrow range of plants.

"They must maintain synchrony with those plants; if they don't then that species will suffer badly."

so... the hottest April in over 300 years?

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.

We live in a house and have our own wheelie bin for normal rubbish and another smaller wheelie bin for the things we want to recycle.

Thank god the councils in London are against the plan to have collection once a fortnight. It was on the news yesterday that the councils in London are not part of the organisation that says that councils should have collection once every two weeks so our councils don't need to listen to them.

A posh part of west London called Knightsbridge has collection TWICE a week... yes you heard me right.

We have a black bin for stuff that can't be recycled, blue for plastic, aluminium and glass, brown for cardboard and food and garden waste, pink bag for fabric and blue bag for paper. One week half are collected, the next week the other half, and that's enough for our family. The only thing is waste in the brown and black bin does remain for two weeks, but we hose it down after collection, so it's not too bad.

In our old area, when we had just the one black bin, we had the opportunity to pay a pound and have the bin washed after collection, but where we live now we never had that option, I think it's coz it's a slightly better area, so the council assume people will do it anyway.

I actually think what we have is a really good system and don't think it needs changing. Each bin is checked before being emptied, so lot's of people's rubbish is left behind coz their rubbish isn't in the correct bins...and it serves them right. The other day on my way to work I noticed a role of carpet sticking out of somebody's brown bin. It made me want to laugh and scream at the same time. Some people are just so lazy.

Vicki Woods"]A friend in Devon told me that, before putting business envelopes in her black box (paper), she has to steam the transparent windows off them and put them in her black wheelie bin (non-recyclable). "The windows are made of some plastic or other and they can't be processed with paper. Same with yogurt pots."

I think it's stupid.

On the other subject, concerned as I am for the future of the planet I'm also unclear about man's role in global warming and the impending catastrophe. I ticked that I'd like to know more, but I suspect there will be debate for a long time yet. Scientists who refute global warming alerts are apparently ostracised and threatened and I don't get that bit at all. And there are downsides to the hysteria:

Financial Times"]Companies and individuals rushing to go green have been spending millions on “carbon credit” projects that yield few if any environmental benefits.

Does anyone think global warming is to blame for this freak weather

or is it just a coincidence?

It is quite a convincing film. However it has met with outrage including from at least one quoted scientist, Carl Wunsch, who claims his participation was heavily edited to show only cherry-picked skepticism and responses to climate change hysteria. He is indeed on record as a documenter of global warming. It was mainly on that basis that I decided to be undecided rather than skeptical. I recommend viewing it as well as researching some of the [url=.

David Deming"]The largest single factor driving the debate on global warming is the Al Gore film An Inconvenient Truth. The movie has been marketed as a scientific documentary, but in fact it is an artful and deceptive propaganda film.

The claims made in An Inconvenient Truth are either wrong, disingenuous, or misleading. Gore frightens his audience by showing the breakup of the Larsen Ice Shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula. He then states that if the West Antarctic Ice Sheet were to melt it would raise sea levels worldwide by 20 feet. But Gore conveniently neglects to inform us that over the last several decades, 80 to 90 percent of Antarctica has been growing colder, in direct contradiction to greenhouse theory. The main ice accumulation in Antarctica is not melting, it’s getting thicker.

Gore leads his audience to believe that for the last 650,000 years of Earth’s climate history, carbon dioxide has determined temperature. But it’s well documented in the scientific literature that changes in temperature preceded changes in carbon dioxide. Temperature controlled carbon dioxide by regulating the release and absorption of this gas from the oceans.

An Inconvenient Truth fails to inform viewers that projections of future warming from carbon dioxide are based on computer models whose reliability and accuracy are completely unknown. As a scientist who has done computer modeling and studied geophysical inverse theory, I find it alarming that people are seriously considering restructuring our entire civilization on the basis of computer models that cannot even be tested.

...

Oh yes, China. The Chinese currently have 2,000 coal-fired power plants, and are proceeding to enthusiastically grow their economy by building a new plant every week. Incredibly, Al Gore says that China should get a free pass on carbon dioxide. He wants the average American to shoulder the responsibility for stopping global warming. The package for An Inconvenient Truth instructs us how to accomplish this. We are supposed to alter the composition of Earth’s atmosphere by switching from incandescent to fluorescent light bulbs, keeping the tires on our cars properly inflated, and planting trees. These recommendations are only exceeded by pop singer Sheryl Crow’s recent assertion that global warming can be stopped by restricting the use of toilet paper.

On the morning of April 8, Charlotte, North Carolina, experienced a low temperature of 21 degrees Fahrenheit. It was the coldest temperature ever recorded in Charlotte for the month of April. But if you think record cold weather is going to falsify global warming, you're hopelessly naive. On April 11, a Purdue professor told the Christian Science Monitor that “this is what you might expect of global warming,” because global warming “isn’t necessarily always a warmer climate, but a more variable climate.” In other words, all weather variations are evidence for global warming. I can’t make this stuff up.
