Hijaab is an Attitude, not a Fashion (and it's for Men Too!!)

Wearing the Hijaab isn't just a matter of simply putting a piece of cloth on your head, it is an attitude, a way of thinking and behaving, and accepting yourself for who and what you are. Basically it constitutes an Islamic way of life, it is a statement which indeed should portray a certain attitude.

A woman may indeed wear a long skirt and a scarf, but if she flirts constantly, then she can't be really described as wearing the Hijaab (Indeed clothes should be long, loose and not see through, after which any style of clothing is applicable).

Jessey Eagan is a Christian and a mother of two, who works as a children's director at Imago Dei Church in Peoria, Illinois. This year during Lent, she decided to wear a hijab. She kept a diary of her experience in a blog called #40DaysOfHijab, which is sparkling a debate both in the Christian and Muslim community.

"I wanted to put myself in someone else's shoes", says Eagan who hopes her practice of solidarity and empathy with the Muslim community will foster interfaith dialogue.

The BBC spoke with Eagan about her experience and her faith.

When I Covered My Head, I Opened My Mind

As a non-Muslim living in Western society, the idea of modesty was not exactly foremost in my mind. Like all other women of my generation and mind-set, I thought such ideas were antiquated and excessive. I felt pity for the poor Muslim woman who had to "wear all that junk," or "walk around in bed - sheets" as I used to call it.

I am getting married

2015 is my year.

I am getting married after 2 months.

As you know Shias Muslims dont get marry during holy month of Muharram because it is a sad month of mourning. We remember Prophet’s grandson Imam Husayn. He was murdered by Yazid the tyrant.

So after 60 days are passed I will get married in month of Prophet’s Birth, Rabi al Awal. Inshallah.

I found a good female. She was Ahl Hadith. Now she and her 3 brothers have converted path of Ahl ul Bayt. She is now a Shia Muslim. I liked her and now I asked her last month. She said yes.

I am so happy.

**ACTION NEEDED** Face Coverings (Prohibition) Bill to be debated at UK Parliament TOMORROW (28/02/2014)

Urgent action needed.

If you look at the for Friday February 28 2014, the 2nd item is "Legislation
Face Coverings (Prohibition) Bill - Second reading - Mr Philip Hollobone"

This is not an official government motion and the chances are this legislation will not be successful.

However, we should not be complacent and we need to protest such attempts at abusing the civil liberties of Muslims.

Limiting Women's freedoms does not increase them.

Under Islamic law, why is a woman's share of the inherited wealth only half that of a man?

The Glorious Qur’an contains specific and detailed guidance regarding the division of the inherited wealth, among the rightful beneficiaries.

The Qur’anic verses that contain guidance regarding inheritance are:

  • Surah Baqarah, chapter 2 verse 180
  • Surah Baqarah, chapter 2 verse 240
  • Surah Nisa, chapter 4 verse 7-9
  • Surah Nisa, chapter 4 verse 19
  • Surah Nisa, chapter 4 verse 33 and
  • Surah Maidah, chapter 5 verse 106-108

There are three verses in the Qur’an that broadly describe the share of close relatives i.e. Surah Nisah chapter 4 verses 11, 12 and 176.

The translation of these verses are as follows:

Muslim women's hostels in 'high demand'

An Islamic charity is to open a third hostel to cope with the demand of homeless Muslim women.

The National Zakat Foundation (NZF) already has two refuges, in London and Birmingham.

The charity said that since the hostels opened a year ago, almost 100 Muslim women have contacted them, most of them victims of abuse.

Fifty four women have been given places and NZF has now secured funding for a third hostel in Greater Manchester.

UN Secretary-General's Campaign UNiTE to End Violence against Women

Do you think this is possible, realistically? If a country agrees to accept domestic violence as a crime, how will they enforce this law and ensure that it doesn't happen? How will they encourage those who are sworn into secrecy to speak out?

Idiots Guide To Marriage in Islam

Author:
Shaykh Salim Ghisa

What is the purpose of marriage in Islam? What are the benefits?

Marriage is a bond that makes it permissible for a man and a woman to have an intimate relationship. This would then allow a child to be born from that relationship and to have its name linked to both the mother and the father.

Can a boy/girl choose her own marriage partner?

Yes a boy or girl can chose their own marriage partners so long as it meets the criteria of Shariah (Islamic law). This means that they should be Muslim and their beliefs should not be of those that take them out of the fold of Islam. (1)

The Truth About Being A Single Muslim Mother

Author:
By Misbah Akhtar

The issue of single Muslim mothers is fast becoming a prevalent one; with divorce on the rise it seems only logical that some of these statistics would also apply to Muslim households.

Why then are they not revered as they deserve to be and instead looked down upon and scorned by many communities?  Is it really seen as so contagious that girls from ‘respectable’ families should stay away from these women in case they too, catch it?
