Never watched "An Inconvenient truth", but I do think it is unfair to make china shoulder all the blame.

It produces less pollution than the US with about 4 times the population.

It's not the best, but definitely not the worst either.

Besides everyone should look into their own backyards first. (By that I do NOT mean the US :P)

can't ask others not to develop in the way we did either. hypocritical. Besides some "solutions" substitute one type of waste with some other more expensive type of waste.

"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.

The front page of the Metro the other day had an article on the fact that Bio-Fuel, which is being developed as an excellent alternative to fossil fuels, was actually very damaging to use. The argument basically was that, at a time when people were needing food and forest produce more and more, using it to power our cars and luxeries in the West was quite counter-productive, because many peole in the third world are starving and the food should go to them.

I think we should basically all just move to a giant space station, and then it doesnt matter if Earth becomes uninhabitable...

Don't just do something! Stand there.

US seeks G8 climate text changes

The US is trying to block sections of a draft agreement on climate change prepared for next month's G8 summit.

Washington objects to the draft's targets to keep the global temperature rise below 2C this century and halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The draft, prepared by the German G8 presidency, said action was imperative.

US negotiators also want to remove from the draft firm targets for improving energy efficiency in buildings and transport, and a call for the establishment of a global carbon market.

For this, it seems that the national gov and some of the states are at loggerheads. Some states are setting up their own energy efficiency stuff similar to the rest of the "developed" world.

China and India should start doing something similar aswell, just because they are not a 'developed' country doesn't mean that they don't need to do anything.

China is the world's second largest emitter of greenhouse gases, one of the main causes of global warming

Official figures suggest that natural diasters killed more than 2,000 people last year and caused millions of dollars in damage.

For centuries China has suffered floods, typhoons and drought, but the government is warning that the nation's problems will be far worse this year.

China's leaders have been reluctant to tackle emissions, worrying that might dent the country's booming economy.

Now, though, the results of that inaction are starting to hit home.

Building cars for 'tree-huggers'

Based in Toronto, the Zenn Motor Company has started to produce the Zenn, or Zero Emission No Noise car.

The $12,500 (£6,250) car runs entirely on electric power and unlike the Prius uses no petrol whatsoever.

But it has a top speed of 25 miles per hour (40km/h) - that way it can be regulated as a low-speed vehicle in the United States. So who is going to buy that?

"Tree-huggers," says Mr Bevilacque.

It is the second largest emitter, but it also has the largest population as well. Doing pretty well if you take that into account.

Ofcourse it should do something, but... well... it is hypocritical to not allow others to develop in the same way we did.

Ofcourse they have the worlds largest population but atleast something should done.... anything!

China has overtaken UK's economy and can be seen as 'developed'. The only parts that are developed are the cities, but the rural areas are pretty much the same.

Call to tax 'wasteful' plasma TVs

Governments should tax plasma screen televisions because of the large amount of energy they consume, according to a leading expert on climate change.

This would encourage development and take-up of more energy efficient diode screens, Professor Ekins said.

He said government could label energy hungry appliances as a first step.

Plasma televisions, which are 50% bigger than their cathode-ray tube equivalents, consume about four times more energy, according to the government-funded Energy Saving Trust.

A cathode-ray tube TV costs about £25 per year to run and accounts for 100kg of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, whereas a plasma TV costs about £100 per year and accounts for 400kg of CO2.

Has anyone got a plasma tv?

We still have the old cathode-ray tube ones, the one with the big behind. I'm just hoping that our tv stops working so dad will get a LCD tv.

It doesn't really matter coz I got a 21inch for my bedroom, mainly use it for playing games.

plasma screen is old tech now. Been around for a while. Got a few flaws which stopped it really taking off. One being price. Another being burn in.

LCD is probably better.

my local council musta heard me ranting on here about the lack of plastic and bottle recyling we're getting collections for these items soon lol Wink

If you'll pardon his swearing, Scott Adams has posted an interesting series about this on . I'm basically agreed with him that we're getting an overload of complex and biased information both for and against the notion of man-made global warming.

the media always seems to go on about how we should recycle more and use buses instead of driving because global warming is on the increase. If it continues it will lead to the ice caps melting and hotter summers. If that is true where is the damn sun lol why is it always raining. Secondly if the damn buses actually turned up on tym and the bus drivers didnt drive like 10MPH then may b ppl wudnt drive
i love my car and im never given it up lol

No not the gum drop buttons! – Gingy

apparently gov is introducing "chip and bin" systems shortly. A small chip on the lid of the wheelie bins will record how much waste houses are producing, those producing too much will be fined coz it means they're not recycling enough.

Is this fair for houses with large families lots of babies? what can u do with nappies put thm in the paper bin with faeces? lol

Also we already pay very high council taxes isn't this fine system just another sneaky tax on a nation already taxed harshly?

As for buses what incentive have the gov made for public to use them? i know i prefer to walk if i had to choose. If i had a car i'd use it only for long journeys otherwise i'm quite happy using trains and walking.

Getting on a bus with a pushchair is crazy i avoid it if i can. Ppl are not very mother&baby friendly in the uk it seems. If i pay my fare and there's seats allocated for pushchairs why should i get comments off ppl i'm quite sick of it, they should get off the seat lazy so n' sos! Make buses child friendly or no incentive for families to use them they will resort to cars.

Why doesn't the gov invest in tram systems rather than these nasty smelly, crammed buses?

Why should i pay £1 for a short hop that's like 5-10 mins on the bus? A dat saver is 2.50? I pay almost 2 quid on the bus if i go to my mums another 50 pence and i can use buses in my town all day doesn't make any sense at all.

I thought the scheme was already being used by some LA's. And secondly I'm sure that the family size will be taken into consideration, as surely they don't expect a single person living on their own to produce the same household waste compared to a small family.

It seems that most people don't like to recycle.... voluntarily, so they need to be forced to do it, and what other way to make them.... fine them if they don't recycle enough.

I'm one of 'em, what really annoys me is the constant crying, esp. when the mother decides not to do anything and let the baby cry for the whole journey.

"yashmaki" wrote:

They apparently have trams in South London (Croydon) although I've never been on one. Haven't you seen these , I think they are 26 meters long. Buses always seem to fill up no matter how big they are.

babies are not always crying, well my son doesn't cry outside, from the day he was born i'd take him everywhere with me, no one to leave him home with. Small babies tend not to cry on buses, or any other transport coz they like the feeling of being in motion it makes them fall asleep.

it's usually toddlers not infants crying, but that's quite normal as you will learn when you have kids. Parents can't do anything about it, sometimes it's best to ignore toddlers tantrums coz they get a kick out of knowing they're grabbing ur attention. Perhaps that's why parents ignore another reason is they're fed up, again ull realise when u have ur own.

just remember u were small once and how would u have liked it if ppl made comments to ur mother?

yeah i've seen the bendy buses we had them here yonks ago. They are good but i think tram systems would be better, run cheaper, and cleaner for the environment too.

"yashmaki" wrote:

If it happens then you just got to deal with it, that's life.

Off-topic, you might know that provocation is a defence to murder. Did you also know that the courts have ruled that a babies constant crying could result in provocation.

I don't really like using public transport, I only use it coz I have to. I'll probably use my car all the time in a few years time.
